PJ Stadium to host Sukma football final, closing ceremony while SIC set for opening

The announcement was made by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari after chairing the organising committee meeting in Shah Alam on Tuesday (July 22). Apart from hosting the football final, the Petaling Jaya Stadium will also serve as the venue for the Sukma closing ceremony, while the opening ceremony will, for the first time, be held at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC). The decision to use the Petaling Jaya Stadium was made as the state's iconic Shah Alam Stadium is currently undergoing reconstruction and is only expected to be completed in 2030. As a result, track and field events will take place at Universiti Putra Malaysia Stadium in Serdang. To ensure the smooth running of the group stage football matches, several other stadiums will also be used, including the Selayang Stadium and Salak Tinggi Stadium, along with facilities at selected local universities through strategic partnerships. "The stadium is the home ground of the Selangor Red Giants. We will hold discussions with the club's management, but I don't foresee it being an issue," said Amirudin. "That's also why we decided not to hold the track and field events there – to avoid affecting the condition of the pitch and the surrounding area. Instead, track and field will be held at UPM. "The men's football final will take place at the Petaling Jaya Stadium, while the women's final will be held at the Selayang Stadium. It was also confirmed that 28 core sports and five optional sports will be contested, with all nine districts in Selangor playing a role in hosting the events. Track cycling will be the only exception, as it will be held at the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. Amirudin said the decision to involve districts outside the Klang Valley is part of efforts to streamline logistics for participating contingents and to ease traffic congestion during peak hours. The Selangor state government is also prepared to deploy its Smart Selangor buses as shuttle transport for athletes and officials to facilitate their movement throughout the Games. "We will work closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), local authorities and the Selangor Mobility Committee to coordinate transportation for Sukma. "The plan is to reassign a portion of the Smart Selangor buses specifically for the Games, instead of their usual daily routes. These will function as shuttle services for athletes and officials to help minimise traffic congestion. "If escort vehicles are needed, I believe the local authorities and police can assist to ensure traffic remains manageable, especially since congestion could be one of the challenges during the event," he added.

Swimmer Khiew Hoe Yean set the pace with a milestone silver medal in the men's 400m freestyle final at the World University Games (WUG) and the focus will shift to the badminton court and athletics arena in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, over the next few days. It will be tough going to add to the medal count for the swimming team given they are up against quality opposition unless Hoe Yean can spring a surprise in his final event - the men's 200m backstroke - next week. Hoe Yean missed out on the men's 200m freestyle final after finishing 13th fastest in the semi-finals (1:48.91s). Another Malaysian swimmer Arvin Shaun Singh placed 16th in the semi-finals (1:49.64s). Only the top eight swimmers advance to the final. Andrew Goh also missed the semi-finals after finishing 24th fastest in the men's 200m breaststroke (2:17.84s). In badminton, the Malaysian team led by Malaysia Games (Sukma) gold medallist Wong Ling Ching stayed on course for a medal in the mixed team event. Malaysia overcame France 3-0 yesterday to march into the quarter-finals. The national team will take on India next and a win will guarantee a medal together with a place in the semis. Malaysia are likely to face champions Japan or Taiwan if they enter the last four. The badminton team, made up largely of national shuttlers, hope to improve on the two bronze medals they picked up at the last Games in Chengdu, China, two years ago. Malaysia's chef de mission Assoc Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Hafiz Yusoff said Hoe Yean's silver medal added value to the contingent as it came at the expense of the athlete setting a new national record (3:47.38s). 'It's a perfect boost to our contingent on the first day of the Games and will generate momentum as other sports get underway. 'We hope our badminton team can enter the final (on Sunday) and after that we also have the track and field events next week. We have top national athletes like sprinter Mohd Azeem Fahmi and Umar Osman competing who will carry our main medal hopes,' he said. The national contingent comprising 64 athletes are targeting to bring home a total of seven medals regardless of colour. Malaysia are taking part in six out of 19 sports - gymnastics, badminton, archery, athletics, swimming and taekwondo.

Gymnastics federation bans Kedah president for life
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Gymnastics Federation (MGF) has slapped Kedah Gymnastics Association (KGA) president Eddy Shuhairie Shukor with a lifetime ban and suspended the state body for three years. MGF president Kau Git Kaur said the decision was finalised after the Sessions Court rejected Eddy's bid to overturn the ban via an injunction on June 10. The punishment follows accusations that Eddy and KGA allowed the Malaysian Aesthetic Group Gymnastics Association to use an MGF-issued sanctioning letter to host an event — allegedly without the national body's consent. Tensions escalated when KGA and Eddy were barred from attending the MGF annual general meeting on June 14. "The Sessions Court dismissed his injunction on June 13, so we had no choice but to act," said Git Kaur at a press conference at the National Sports Council on Thursday. "We recommended a life ban because they tried to exploit the timing — right before the AGM — to use their voting rights for political manoeuvring. This kind of behaviour is unacceptable and damages the sport's integrity." Git Kaur stressed that MGF remains open to reconciliation but said no appeal has been submitted. "They still have the right to appeal. We're willing to support them if they want to come back, but so far, nothing has come through," he said. "This issue could've been resolved easily. If they had acknowledged the mistake and apologised, we would've given them another chance. "While KGA is suspended, gymnasts from Kedah are still allowed to compete at the Malaysia Games (Sukma), but not in any MGF-sanctioned competitions." Eddy, meanwhile, said the legal battle is far from over.

Family of late Sukma weightlifting athlete receives Perkeso benefits
KUALA NERUS: The family of former Malaysia Games (Sukma) weightlifting athlete Siti Noralyaa Mat Marzuki, who died last Saturday from breast cancer, has received survivor's pension benefits from the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso). Perkeso Terengganu director Suhara Mustaffa said the late athlete's parents and four younger siblings, aged between eight and 16, will receive a cumulative monthly pension of RM897 starting next month. The family also received RM3,000 in funeral management assistance under Perkeso's social protection scheme. "Perkeso remains committed to safeguarding the welfare of Terengganu athletes. Over the past two years, we've supported 25 athletes undergoing rehabilitation, including two Terengganu FC (TFC) players still receiving treatment at the Perkeso Rehabilitation Centre," she said during a visit to the family home in Taman Batin Perdana today. Also present were Terengganu Youth, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisations Committee chairman Hishamuddin Abdul Karim and Terengganu State Sports Council (MSNT) director Ahmad Shahrizal Yahaya. Meanwhile, the late athlete's mother, Rusmailaili Samsuri, 43, said the assistance has helped ease the family's burden as they cope with their loss. She said her daughter, the eldest of five siblings, was a key contributor to the household, especially in covering her siblings' education expenses. "After leaving MSNT, she worked at a petrol station to help support the family. My husband works as a bread delivery driver and I'm a full-time homemaker. "She was a good daughter. Most of her salary was spent on daily necessities and school supplies for her siblings," she said.
