Gymnastics federation bans Kedah president for life

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Gymnastics Federation (MGF) has slapped Kedah Gymnastics Association (KGA) president Eddy Shuhairie Shukor with a lifetime ban and suspended the state body for three years.
MGF president Kau Git Kaur said the decision was finalised after the Sessions Court rejected Eddy's bid to overturn the ban via an injunction on June 10.
The punishment follows accusations that Eddy and KGA allowed the Malaysian Aesthetic Group Gymnastics Association to use an MGF-issued sanctioning letter to host an event — allegedly without the national body's consent.
Tensions escalated when KGA and Eddy were barred from attending the MGF annual general meeting on June 14.
"The Sessions Court dismissed his injunction on June 13, so we had no choice but to act," said Git Kaur at a press conference at the National Sports Council on Thursday.
"We recommended a life ban because they tried to exploit the timing — right before the AGM — to use their voting rights for political manoeuvring. This kind of behaviour is unacceptable and damages the sport's integrity."
Git Kaur stressed that MGF remains open to reconciliation but said no appeal has been submitted.
"They still have the right to appeal. We're willing to support them if they want to come back, but so far, nothing has come through," he said.
"This issue could've been resolved easily. If they had acknowledged the mistake and apologised, we would've given them another chance.
"While KGA is suspended, gymnasts from Kedah are still allowed to compete at the Malaysia Games (Sukma), but not in any MGF-sanctioned competitions."
Eddy, meanwhile, said the legal battle is far from over.

Sukma 2026 dates confirmed for Selangor with Para Sukma in September

SHAH ALAM: The 20th edition of the Malaysian Games (SUKMA) will take place in Selangor from August 15 to 24, 2026, with the Para SUKMA tournament following from September 5 to 14. The announcement was made by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari today. The official logo and mascot for both events will be revealed on August 15, exactly one year before the opening ceremony. SUKMA 2026 will feature 28 core sports and five additional disciplines, while Para SUKMA will include 10 core sports. Further details will be confirmed by the SUKMA Supreme Council after its meeting in early August. Competitions will be spread across nine districts and 12 local authorities in Selangor, except for track cycling, which will be held at the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. More than 10,000 athletes and officials from 15 state contingents, including Brunei Darussalam, are expected to participate. Amirudin also addressed financial support for Team Selangor, stating that additional funding would depend on recommendations from the Selangor Sports Council. 'As host, our contingent has a responsibility to ensure success and aims to reclaim the overall championship, as we did in 2006, 2013, and 2016. Selangor has consistently been among the top performers,' he said. - Bernama

PJ Stadium to host Sukma football final, closing ceremony while SIC set for opening

Good vibes: Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari (right) sharing a light moment while speaking to the press after chairing the Sukma XXII management committee meeting at Concorde Hotel in Shah Alam yesterday. Also present was Selangor state executive Councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star SHAH ALAM: The Petaling Jaya Stadium has been selected as the venue for the football final of the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Selangor from Aug 15-24 next year. The announcement was made by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari after chairing the organising committee meeting in Shah Alam on Tuesday (July 22). Apart from hosting the football final, the Petaling Jaya Stadium will also serve as the venue for the Sukma closing ceremony, while the opening ceremony will, for the first time, be held at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC). The decision to use the Petaling Jaya Stadium was made as the state's iconic Shah Alam Stadium is currently undergoing reconstruction and is only expected to be completed in 2030. As a result, track and field events will take place at Universiti Putra Malaysia Stadium in Serdang. To ensure the smooth running of the group stage football matches, several other stadiums will also be used, including the Selayang Stadium and Salak Tinggi Stadium, along with facilities at selected local universities through strategic partnerships. "The stadium is the home ground of the Selangor Red Giants. We will hold discussions with the club's management, but I don't foresee it being an issue," said Amirudin. "That's also why we decided not to hold the track and field events there – to avoid affecting the condition of the pitch and the surrounding area. Instead, track and field will be held at UPM. "The men's football final will take place at the Petaling Jaya Stadium, while the women's final will be held at the Selayang Stadium. It was also confirmed that 28 core sports and five optional sports will be contested, with all nine districts in Selangor playing a role in hosting the events. Track cycling will be the only exception, as it will be held at the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. Amirudin said the decision to involve districts outside the Klang Valley is part of efforts to streamline logistics for participating contingents and to ease traffic congestion during peak hours. The Selangor state government is also prepared to deploy its Smart Selangor buses as shuttle transport for athletes and officials to facilitate their movement throughout the Games. "We will work closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), local authorities and the Selangor Mobility Committee to coordinate transportation for Sukma. "The plan is to reassign a portion of the Smart Selangor buses specifically for the Games, instead of their usual daily routes. These will function as shuttle services for athletes and officials to help minimise traffic congestion. "If escort vehicles are needed, I believe the local authorities and police can assist to ensure traffic remains manageable, especially since congestion could be one of the challenges during the event," he added.

Chen Jie guns for glory at Asian meet after breaking national mark

PETALING JAYA: National rifle shooter Gan Chen Jie is gearing up for the Asian Championships in Kazakhstan from Aug 16-30 with confidence after a stellar show at the recently concluded Tun Tan Siew Sin Trophy. The 20-year-old fired down two gold medals in the 10m air rifle on Friday and 50m rifle three position on Thursday at the National Shooting Range in Subang Jaya but it was her performance in the shorter distance that won admiration. She shattered the national record in the qualifying event with a score of 627.3 points, surpassing the previous mark of 627.0 set by Shahera Rahim Raja in 2019. In the thrilling final, she scored 246.5 points to edge out Perak's Nor Ayla Aqila Mahathir (245.7). In the 50m rifle three positions, she amassed 445.8 to comfortably finish ahead of Alia Husna Budruddin (438.5) and veteran Nur Suryani Taibi (426.4). 'I'm truly honoured and grateful to break both the senior and junior (rewrote her own mark of 626.9) national records in the 10m air rifle event,' said an elated Chen Jie. 'The achievement in the Tun Tan Siew Sin Trophy gives me extra motivation to keep improving and stay focused on my goals,' said the Sarawak Malaysia Games (Sukma) seven-gold medal winner. 'I know there's still a long way to go, but I'm ready to keep pushing.' Besides the Asian meet, Chen Jie is also to qualify for this year's SEA Games in Thailand. 'I hope I can stay on the right track and maintain this momentum all the way to qualify for the SEA Games.' 'It's all about consistency, and I also try to handle the pressure by focusing in the process rather than comparing myself to others.' MEN 10m air pistol Individual : 1.
