'Alliances Will Be Formed Close To Polls': EPS Aims For Oppn Unity To Outdo DMK

As the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections approach, the decisions made by Vijay and other non-Dravidian contestants will play a significant role
With over eight months to go for the Tamil Nadu assembly polls, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has launched its campaign titled 'Makkalai Kappom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom" (we will protect the people and retrieve Tamil Nadu). In an exclusive conversation with CNN-News 18, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami hinted that doors are open to all parties aiming to defeat the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
'We have eight months to go. Alliances will be formed closer to elections. A few more parties will join the AIADMK-BJP alliance. How can we say whether TVK will join us for sure? Those who want to defeat the DMK should come together and win. If such parties unite, votes won't split, and the possibility of winning is higher," Palaniswami told CNN-News 18.
Actor-turned-politician Vijay had earlier ended speculation that his party (Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam) would not join the BJP or the DMK directly or indirectly. However, AIADMK believes that electoral alliances will only be clear closer to the election.
In response to his opinion on Vijay's political debut, Palaniswami said, 'India is a democratic country. Anybody can start a party. Anybody who wants to serve the people can start a party."
Ever since the AIADMK joined the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA, the DMK has accused Palaniswami of putting his party in a subservient position to the BJP. Palaniswami hit back at chief minister and DMK president MK Stalin, maintaining that both the AIADMK and the BJP aim to defeat the 'anti-people government" and hence decided to form the alliance.
Throughout his campaigns, Palaniswami projects himself as a farmer, identifying with the large agrarian vote banks across the non-metro areas in the state. 'The DMK chief accuses us of forming an alliance for 'personal gains'. What gains is he referring to? I'm a farmer. What will be my gains? DMK may have a lot of assets, and to protect their assets, they may do so…we are not like that. If that were the case, we would have joined hands with them for 2024," he has said.
While canvassing, Palaniswami is raising issues from deteriorating law and order to concerns over women's safety.
The ruling alliance remains intact. The Congress and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) continue with the DMK, bonded by their anti-BJP stance cemented over the years. The surprise, it turns out, may come from the opposition camp. Among the possibilities is actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) entering into some kind of support for Palaniswami's alliance. This would prevent a split-vote scenario massively beneficial to the DMK. As a debutante, Vijay may want to test the waters by contesting alone, but there are enough examples of those who have stumbled after the initial enthusiasm in this direction.
As the election approaches, the decisions made by Vijay and other non-Dravidian contestants will play a significant role in determining who will win in 2026.

HC quashes FIR against CM in BJP ‘defamation' case

Justice K. Lakshman of the Telangana High Court, on Friday, quashed the proceedings related to the First Information Report (FIR) issued against Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, pending before a local court in Hyderabad. The case was registered against the CM based on a private complaint lodged by BJP General Secretary Kasam Venkateshwarlu, alleging that Mr. Revanth Reddy defamed BJP by stating that 'the party would do away with reservation to BCs, SCs and STs if it came to power'. The statement was made by the CM at a public meeting in Kothagudem during the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign, the complainant said. Challenging this, Mr. Revanth Reddy filed a criminal petition in the HC, which set aside the FIR.

BJP announces protest against govt in Mandi on Aug 6

Shimla: Himachal BJP president Dr Rajeev Bindal on Friday announced that the saffron party would stage a massive protest on August 6 at Mandi against the state govt's "repressive policies" and for registering "false cases" against its political opponents. He claimed that the Congress dispensation made it a routine to register cases and file chargesheets against anyone raising their voice against the govt. An FIR was registered against the BJP leaders in Sirmaur, besides filing cases against 72 disaster-hit people who lost their land and houses in the June 30 monsoon disaster in Thunag of Mandi district for the alleged disrespect to the national flag, said Bindal. The BJP leader also claimed that the state govt spent Rs 150 crore between 2022 and 2025 for the monsoon disaster. However, he added that the central govt released Rs 7,513 crore to the state besides providing MGNREGA funds. Bindal also slammed the state govt for the resumption of lottery sales. He said the BJP govt banned the sale of lottery tickets in 1999, but it was in 2004 that the Congress govt started it again. Though the sale of lottery was banned again in 2007, the Congress govt allowed lottery sales in a cabinet meeting on Thursday, he added. MSID:: 123046517 413 |

Who is Maulana Sajid Rashidi, slapped by SP workers over inappropriate remark on Dimple Yadav

As a video of Rashidi's comment began to circulate on social media, a case was registered against him at Vibhuti Khand police station in Lucknow, on a complaint by SP worker Pravesh Yadav. After the show aired, a group of Samajwadi Party workers slapped Maulana Rashidi at a TV set in Noida. UP police sources told ThePrint that SP workers who slapped Rashidi have been identified as Shyam Singh Bhati, national secretary of the SP Advocate Sabha; Mohit Nagar, district president of the SP student wing, Gautam Budhha Nagar; Prashant Bhati, state secretary of the party's student wing; and Kuldeep Bhati, an SP worker. Lucknow: Maulana Sajid Rashidi is no stranger to controversy. The Delhi-based president of the All India Imam Association has been in the news many times for making provocative statements, especially during TV debates. Now, Rashidi finds himself facing another political storm over an inappropriate comment he made about Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Dimple Yadav, who is also the wife of former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav. Speaking to ANI after the incident, Rashidi later defended his remarks. 'She (Dimple) didn't abide by Islamic beliefs while sitting in the mosque. Iqra Hasan's ears and nose are covered. On the other hand, there is Dimple Yadav … The question is, will Akhilesh Yadav file an FIR against the person who took this picture (of the mosque visit),' he said. 'I will also go to the police and submit the phone numbers from which I received threats. I will file a case against Akhilesh and Dimple Yadav because it is their workers who are sending threats,' he added. Reacting to the controversy, Dimple Yadav told reporters, 'It's good that an FIR was registered. It would have been better if they had protested when the incidents against women happened in Manipur. After Operation Sindoor, BJP leaders made indecent remarks against our armed forces officers. It would have been better if they had stood against it.' Following a police complaint by the TV news channel, a case has been registered at Noida's Sector 126 police station against Maulana Sajid Rashidi, Shyam Singh Bhati, Mohit Nagar and Kuldeep Bhati. Police are currently investigating the matter. At the time of the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, he said he voted for the BJP to dispel fear among Muslims about supporting the party and to challenge the belief that Muslims don't support the BJP. BJP leader Amit Malviya even shared Rashidi's video online during the Delhi polls to claim that a large number of Muslims were supporting the BJP now. Rashidi later clarified that his real intention was to make the Muslim community politically independent. He also supported the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, calling it a revolutionary step to safeguard the rights of the Muslim community. He also accused those opposing the law of trying to provoke unrest and urged the government to check the properties of those opposing it. In response to the Pahalgam terror attack, he blamed Pakistan, saying its actions were tarnishing the image of Indian Muslims. He even said that, if necessary, he was ready to go to the border himself to teach Pakistan a lesson. In an interview with ANI in 2023, he made a controversial comment about 17th-century Maratha ruler Shivaji, downplaying his contributions. In 2023, he claimed that Mahmud of Ghazni was right to demolish the Somnath temple, alleging that 'wrong things' were happening there. He later apologised after a backlash and an FIR from the Somnath Trust. In 2024, he drew flak for comments made during a TV debate. Loni BJP MLA Nand Kishor Gurjar filed a complaint against him, accusing him of hurting the sentiments of Hindus. Back in 2022, Rashidi supported threats issued against then BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma over her controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad.
