Mamelodi Sundowns will receive an impressive R174 million just for participating in the 2025 Fifa Club World Cup, as well as R36 million for each victory during the group stage.
This substantial financial injection will enable Sundowns to easily maintain and enhance their stronghold in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), ensuring their ongoing dominance in domestic football.
However, this development is rather ominous for the PSL's two glamour teams, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
Both clubs boast a rich history and monumental fan-bases, often highlighted by the 'sold out' Soweto Derbies, where passion and rivalry ignite stadiums.
Chiefs and Pirates have also enjoyed the thrill of several capacity crowds over the past two seasons.
Until recently, Chiefs have not won a trophy in a decade, but they continue to attract lucrative sponsorships based on their pulling power, despite dwindling crowds.
Yet, as Sundowns' dominance continues to grow, these storied franchises appear increasingly destined to remain in the shadows of their Chloorkop rivals.
Sundowns' motto, 'The sky is the limit', reflects a commitment to transcend the traditional boundaries of sporting success.
Their emblem – a hand poised with a finger pointing skyward – symbolises an aspiration that knows no limitations, whether rooted in historical performance or geographical challenges.
The tragedy of the situation is that Chiefs and Pirates have shown no ambition to reclaim their lost glory, and will remain ensnared in the slipstream of Sundowns' relentless pursuit of excellence.
There is no evidence that the 'Soweto Giants' will rise to challenge Masandawana or continue to watch from the shadows.
While Sundowns have been in the United States, the club's chairman, Tlhopie Motsepe, outlined the Brazilians' ambitious plans to invest in local talent development and expand essential infrastructure.
At the heart of this vision is the establishment of a world-class academy aimed at nurturing home-grown talent.
Motsepe emphasised that the goal is to ensure the finest local players do not have to look overseas to join the ranks of prestigious European clubs.
He spoke about an academy that stands toe-to-toe with Europe's elite institutions.
He also highlighted the urgent need for robust infrastructure, notably the club's aspiration to build a stadium, noting the benefits of having a dedicated venue as a home ground.
On the playing field, the Fifa Club World Cup will be a game-changer for the South African players wearing the famous Brazilian-inspired jerseys.
They will face opponents with distinctive playing styles and strategies, propelling the team into uncharted territory.
They will step onto the pitch against European powerhouse Borussia Dortmund and South American heavyweights Fluminense, and each match presents an invaluable opportunity for growth and development.
Every match will serve as a test of skill and a rite of passage, transporting Sundowns from regional dominance to global contenders.
With each opponent presenting a fresh challenge, the club has the chance to elevate its playing standards, an evolution that could define its legacy on the international stage.
In their next two group matches, Sundowns will confront the blistering speed of Germany's Dortmund and the intricate ball control epitomised by Brazil's Fluminense.

Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze - the two Assistant coaches are keeping Kaizer Chiefs perfect in Nasreddine Nabi's Absence

COULD Nasreddine Nabi be the problem in the Kaizer Chiefs' technical since his lieutants have for second time managed a 100% winning record in his absence? | Itumeleng English / Independent Newspapers Image: Itumeleng English / Independent Newspapers You have to give it to Kaizer Chiefs assistant coaches, Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze — they know how to get the team firing in the absence of Nasreddine Nabi. Chiefs' master tactician, Nabi, hasn't been with the team since the start of the season, as he had to travel back home to Tunisia for a family emergency. Enter his trusted lieutenants, Ben Youssef and Kaze. The duo have been on cruise mode, guiding the team to back-to-back wins in the Betway Premiership since the start. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading It's been a fantastic ride for the pair and the team, as they didn't take their foot off the pedal after beating Stellenbosch 2-0 and Polokwane City 1-0 respectively. The recent wins and clean sheets added another feather to their caps, as they also won their first two games in charge 1-0 and 4-0 after Nabi was red-carded last season. Now, with four wins and clean sheets on the trot when they are at the helm, it's safe to say Chiefs are in capable hands when Nabi is not around. This is not to suggest that Nabi is the problem in the dugout — far from it. But what's clear is that Chiefs are a different beast altogether when the 59-year-old coach is absent. There could be many reasons for this, especially considering the 'open working conditions and environment' within the club's technical team. Nabi speaks limited English and has had to rely on Kaze for translation during his media briefings — both pre- and post-match. While he might be able to get his message across in English to players during training and on match day, he's less fluent than Kaze and Ben Youssef. That could be one of the Achilles' heels for Nabi, especially during critical phases of a game when the team needs to react quickly. Nabi has shown that he is a team player rather than a sole decision-maker, often communicating and heeding advice from his technical staff — especially Kaze — but ultimately, the buck stops with him. So, in cases where contrasting suggestions arise from his staff, the final word and decision must come from him. That, at times, could come back to bite him. Ben Youssef and Kaze might not face the same difficulty; they could more easily find common ground for a balanced approach. That could be a masterstroke, especially given Kaze's admission that Nabi trusts them to lead the team without his interference during his absence. Young, modern coaches often help young players flourish, as there tends to be mutual respect and understanding beyond football. There's usually more freedom and trust between the two parties, leading to the kind of good fortunes that benefit the team across the board. Playing under pressure can either make or break a team. While Chiefs won the Nedbank Cup last season, the reality is they still endured a disappointing campaign. Pressure seemed to get to Nabi last season as he backtracked on building the team around youngsters, instead relying mostly on senior players — an approach that still failed. Abdeslam Ouaddou under fire as Miguel Cardoso exudes confidence ahead of Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns MTN8 semi-final clash

THERE will be no Lucas Ribeiro but Orlando Pirates defenders like Deano van Rooyen will be working overtime defending against an Arthur Sales-inspired Mamelodi Sundowns at Orlando Stadium. | Itumeleng English/Independent Newspapers Abdeslam Ouaddou and his counterpart Miguel Cardoso cut contrasting figures at the PSL offices this week, telling tales of different fortunes. Ouaddou was sombre during his pre-match press conference ahead of their MTN8 semi-final first-leg clash against Sundowns. The Moroccan was almost present in body only, leaning tightly against his seat and wearily staring at the journalists. The 46-year-old's demeanour was understandable, as reporters pressed him on the Buccaneers' poor start to the Betway Premiership campaign. Ouaddou had lost his first two league games to Sekhukhune United and Marumo Gallants, resulting in heavy scrutiny and early pressure from fans. Some Ghosts are already calling for his head, insisting that his decision to throw new players in at the deep end has led to their shortcomings. And having been tipped to build on the foundation laid by his predecessor, Jose Riveiro, his critics argue that he seems out of sorts and unable to manage a big squad. That pressure to turn the tide could mount further by Saturday afternoon if Ouaddou loses to Sundowns in a competition where Riveiro thrived — winning three crowns in a row. But despite the frustrations of the fans, Ouaddou insisted they are putting every measure in place to ensure camaraderie among the players and healthy competition for places. 'When you have such a number of players, they know they are playing for one of the biggest clubs in Africa,' Ouaddou said. 'They know the fans' and everyone's expectations. 'So, we are ready to help them reach their targets and achieve higher levels. We want to help them improve — that's what we are doing even in difficult times. 'We are doing the best things for them so that they can improve tactically and technically. But their mentality is also very important.'
