Srihari LR becomes India's 86th Grandmaster
A full year after getting its 85 grandmaster, India got its 86th GM after 19-year-old Srihari LR got the coveted title when he played against GM Iniyan Paneerselvam at the Asian Individual Men's Chess Championship which is going on right now at Al-Ain. Before Srihari, India's last grandmaster was Shyaamnikhil P, who earned the top title in the sport on 12th May, 2024.
Srihari, who unsurprisingly hails from the state of Tamil Nadu, is coached by grandmaster Shyam Sundar at the academy called Chess Thulir. Shyam Sundar has also coached the likes of Pranav V.

Coming into the Asian Individual Men's Chess Championship, Srihari had earned his two grandmaster norms — the first coming at the Qatar Masters in 2023, while the second one came at the Chennai GM Open event in 2024. He had also crossed the 2500 rating threshold in the published ratings last year itself in August 2024. All Srihari needed was to play the game against Iniyan Paneerselvam at Al-Ain for him to secure his third norm that confirms his ascendency to the GM title.
At Al-Ain, Srihari has gone unbeaten in eight games while his ninth game against Iniyan is still going on. Remarkably, eight of his games at the event have come against grandmasters. He has beaten Indian grandmasters Abhijeet Gupta and Pranav V while holding other GMs like AR Saleh Salem (from UAE), China's Xu Xiangyu, Pranav Anand, Aleksey Grebnev (representing FIDE) and Pranesh M to draws.

Meanwhile, Dhiraj Bommadevara, India's top qualifier at 13th, allowed a 4-2 lead to slip from his palms in the second round encounter against Chinese Taipei's Tang Chih-Chun by a 6-4 scoreline. Atanu Das was also ousted in the second round, after succumbing to a defeat against Paris 2024 silver medallist Brady Ellison of the USA. The recurve men's team of Dhiraj Bommadevara, Atanu Das and Parth Salunkhe crashed out following a 5-1 defeat against France in the third-place playoff. In the compound archery events, Jyothi Surekha Vennam, the reigning Asian Games champion, returned empty-handed after losing to Estonia's Meeri-Marita Paas 152-150 in the second round. Madhura Dhamangaonkar, who secured a gold medal in women's individual compound in Shanghai last month, suffered a bitter defeat against Mexico's Mariana Bernal 159-152 in the quarter-finals. Ahmedabad, Jun 7 (PTI) Rising star Yashaswini Ghorpade pulled off a massive upset, becoming the first paddler to beat China's Fan Siqi this UTT season in U Mumba TT's 9-6 win over Stanley's Chennai Lions here on Saturday. Earlier, Jeet Chandra upset World No. 34 Ricardo Walther of Germany as Jaipur Patriots recorded a dominant 11-4 win over Ahmedabad SG Pipers. U Mumba's Lilian Bardet continued his fine form with a 2-1 win over Kirill Gerassimenko, setting his team on their way. Young Indians impress as Delhi GM Open 2025 chess tournament gets underway
Delhi GM Open chess tournament NEW DELHI: The Delhi International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament 2025 commenced today at Tivoli Gardens, featuring remarkable first-round results. In a notable upset, Vairaj Sogerwal (1869) secured a victory against Armenia's GM Karen H Grigoryan (2520). Additionally, young Meetansh Dixit (1874) achieved an impressive draw against Georgian GM Levan Pantsulaia (2551), highlighting the emerging talent at the event.
