The story of "Sister Hong," also known as "China's Red Uncle," a man who secretly filmed sexual encounters with allegedly over 1,600 men while posing as a woman, recently shook Chinese social media. On July 5, police in Nanjing arrested a 38-year-old man, surnamed Jiao, for distributing obscene content. According to local media, Jiao had set up a hidden camera in his home and filmed himself having sex with unsuspecting male visitors. He reportedly lured them in by pretending to be a woman online. Aside from digital violation and deceit, the case has also snowballed into a disturbing public health scare as the STD (sexually transmitted disease) results of several of Sister Hong's victims test positive.According to areport, out of 237 men who have so far participated in the ongoing investigation, at least three have tested positive for HIV. Authorities have not confirmed whether the infections are directly linked to Jiao, but the news has intensified concerns. Many of the victims were in relationships, raising the possibility of wider STI transmission.In China, knowingly transmitting an STD carries a potential sentence of three to ten years in prison. However, this portion of Jiao's charges may depend on whether transmission can be legally proven. Regardless, the charge of spreading obscene material already holds a maximum penalty of two years.'Sister Hong' was initially rumoured to be in his 60s, but police confirmed he is 38 and targets heterosexual men. On platforms like Weibo and Douyin, users have expressed fury and disbelief at how such an operation could go undetected for so long.Online, Jiao has become known as 'Uncle Red' or 'Sister Hong' (Red Sister), a nickname that references both his alias and the red light often visible in his room during the recordings. The nickname took off as netizens began circulating screenshots and speculation about his real identity. Despite efforts by platforms to remove the videos and censor discussions, the story continues to trend.
