PMPML revises fare structure, introduces 11-stage system
Under the new structure, there will now be 11 fare stages — six stages for distances from 1 to 30 km (in 5 km intervals), and five stages from 30 to 80 km (in 10 km intervals). This replaces the earlier 40-stage system based on 2 km intervals.
PMPML operates city and regional bus services across Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) areas. The last fare revision was implemented in 2014, based on a state government directive issued in 2005.
'The new fare structure will simplify integration with Pune Metro, ensure accurate fare calculations, and align with e-ticketing and the National Common Mobility Card system,' said Deepak Mudhol, chairman and managing director of PMPML.
'It also aims to bring clarity and fairness for commuters while improving operational efficiency,' he said.
Changes to passes
The fare revision will also lead to modifications in daily and monthly passes. The existing daily pass ( ₹40) and monthly pass ( ₹900), valid within the limits of Pune or Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations, will be discontinued. A unified daily pass for both cities will now cost ₹70, and the monthly pass will be priced at ₹1,500.
The daily pass for the PMRDA area has been reduced from ₹120 to ₹115. Passes for students, senior citizens, and differently abled commuters remain unchanged.
'The new fare slabs are in line with recent revisions by transport bodies such as MSRTC, BEST (Mumbai), and Nagpur City Bus,' Mudhol added.
Transport body to add new buses to fleet
To improve its fleet, PMPML will soon receive 500 new CNG buses, funded by a ₹230 crore provision from the PMRDA. An additional 500 CNG buses will be procured through a self-ownership model, based on proportional ownership between the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad civic bodies.
To curb rising salary expenditure, the PMPML board has also approved hiring certain categories of staff on a contractual basis. All changes are expected to be rolled out in the coming months.

One arm of flyover on Ganeshkhind Road to be open to public from Wednesday
Following a barrage of criticism over the delay in opening the flyovers on Ganeshkhind Road and Sinhagad Road — with the reason for the delay being that the Chief Minister was unavailable for the inauguration — one lane from Aundh to Shivajinagar of the double-decker flyover at Savitribai Phule Pune University junction will be inaugurated by Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday evening. The flyover on Sinhagad Road will take more time before it is complete. It was expected that both flyovers would be inaugurated on August 15. 'The Ganeshkhind Road flyover has been constructed by Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) as an alternative solution to ease traffic congestion in the area. The flyover will be opened to traffic after the inauguration. Commuting through this area will become more convenient for motorists and citizens,' said Yogesh Mhase, Metropolitan Commissioner of PMRDA. The integrated double-decker flyover was constructed at a cost of Rs 277 crore. To ease traffic congestion and provide adequate road space for traffic, Ganeshkhind Road has been widened up to 45 metres between Pune University and the College of Agriculture. The ramps on the Shivajinagar and Aundh sides are completed, while the remaining ramps on the Baner and Pashan sides are expected to be completed by October 2025, Mhase said. Actual construction of the flyover began in August 2022. The government approved the agreement between the Metro Concessionaire Company and PMRDA in May 2020 for the construction of a double decker flyover to replace the earlier two one-way flyovers, which were demolished in August 2020. The double decker flyover has a Metro rail on top, which is the Maan-Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar Metro Line-3. The total length of the flyover is 1.7 km, while the Aundh to Shivajinagar arm is 1.3 km and is a three lane road with a width of 9.5 metres. For the 23.203 km elevated metro project from Maan-Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar, the construction of a Metro station at University Junction is underway. A proposed Metro skywalk will connect the Metro station to Aundh, Baner and Pashan roads. The Metro rail project on the route is progressing well, with 88.51 per cent of physical work complete to date. The 1,540 metre-long arm of the flyover from Goel Ganga Chowk to Inamdar Chowk on Sinhagad road will need more time before it is opened to the public. In the Sinhagad Road flyover project, a one-way flyover with a length of 520 metres at Rajaram Bridge Chowk and a 2,120-metre long flyover from Vithalwadi to Fun Time Theatre had been opened to the public earlier. 'Most of the work of the flyover arm from Goel Ganga to Inamdar Chowk has been completed. However work on thermoplastic paint, signages, boards and junction improvement for safety purposes are still underway. The Pune Municipal Corporation is working on the city police's suggestions on safety infrastructure at the junctions on roads. Street lights are being installed but this work is getting affected due to the rain. The flyover will be open as soon as the work is completed,' said a PMC official. Opposition Congress and NCP(SP) had criticised the administration for delaying the flyovers' inauguration and ignoring problems of citizens using the road.

The scheme proposes a 65-metre-wide bypass road network through the villages of Dhamane, Godumbare, Darumbre, Salumbre, Sangwade, and Nere. It is part of the state government's phased plan to address mounting traffic congestion in the region. In the PMRDA budget, 15 town planning schemes were proposed along the ring road. At a consultation meeting held at the PMRDA office on Thursday, PMRDA Commissioner Yogesh Mhase told farmers that their concerns would be addressed before any acquisition took place. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to set up five 'VIP washrooms' at a cost of Rs 72 lakh each at the entry points of the city to address the issue of lack of high-standard restrooms. The 'VIP washrooms' will come up at Balewadi Jakatnaka, the entry point from Mumbai; Katraj, the entry point from Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, and Bangalore; Wagholi, the entry point from Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, and Central India; Shewalewadi, the entry point from Solapur and Southern India; and the Swargate bus stand, which caters to commuters from all parts of the city. The fees for using these 'VIP washrooms' will be decided later. 'The locations for five VIP washrooms have been strategically planned in Pune. Many prominent people visit the city for business, family, or social events. Some come for official purposes and leave without staying in the city, often facing inconvenience when it comes to freshening up. The VIP washrooms will provide these visitors with the necessary facilities to ensure their comfort,' said Sandeep Kadam, incharge of civic solid waste management department. 'The VIP washrooms will feature air conditioning, bathing facilities, separate changing rooms, and well-maintained toilets. There will be charging points for mobile phones and laptops, as well as Wi-Fi access. Additionally, provisions will be made for men, women, and people with physical disabilities,' said Kadam. There will be a ramp for people with physical disabilities to enter the washrooms, and staff will be assigned to clean them frequently. A private agency will be responsible for the operation of the washrooms, said Kadam. Meanwhile, the PMC is refurbishing its`Ti' toilets for women at busy locations in the city. 'Ti' toilets were launched in October 2016 to address the shortage of women's restrooms in crowded public areas by repurposing old Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) buses.
