West Ham's Joel Kerr set to miss minor final with Tyrone

RTÉ News04-07-2025
Tyrone forward Joel Kerr is to miss the All-Ireland MFC final after taking up a professional contact with Premier League club West Ham this week.
The London club's academy has denied the exciting Red Hands star permission to face Kerry in Sunday's decider at Newbridge.
Having signed from Glentoran several months ago, the teenager's contract commenced on 1 July, just six days before what would have been the biggest game of his Gaelic football career.
It's understood manager Gerard Donnelly has not given up hope of having the Rock St Patrick's clubman available this weekend, and talks are continuing between Tyrone and West Ham officials in a bid to reach some sort of agreement to have him released to face the Kingdom.
Kerr has signed a three-year contract with West Ham and joined up with his new club this week as one of the brightest prospects to emerge from Northern Ireland in recent seasons.
The 16-year-old is eligible to play minor football again next season, but what is certain is that he will not be part of the 2026 Red Hands side.
He has been one of the standout players in Tyrone's march to a first All-Ireland MFC final since 2021, hitting a couple of late scores to help them to victory over Cavan in the Ulster final when he was named man of the match, and he grabbed a vital goal in the All-Ireland semi-final win over Roscommon.
He has been a member of the Glentoran academy since 2020 and has represented Northern Ireland at youth level, producing some sparkling displays as a winger.

Diogo Jota's heartbroken family wipe away tears after tribute to late star

The wife and parents of tragic Diogo Jota were moved to tears at Molineux on Saturday evening as Wolves honoured their former star with a stunning tifo before their Premier League opener against Manchester City. The magnificent tribute in the south bank featured a colossal image of Jota celebrating a goal during his spell as a Wolves player - when he spearheaded their Championship triumph and promotion, followed by consecutive seventh-place Premier League campaigns. Adjacent to the tifo, a banner was displayed on the pitch bearing the message: "We'll remember you when you walk in fields of gold." Jota's wife, Rute Cardoso, attended the fixture alongside Ruben Neves, Jota's former Wolves and Portugal teammate and one of his dearest friends, who also served as a pallbearer at his funeral following his heartbreaking death last month. The parents of Jota and Andre Silva, who died alongside his brother in the car crash in Spain, were also in attendance for the match. Like Jota's wife, Isabel and Joaquim Silva were visibly emotional. When the clock reached the 18-minute mark during the encounter, fans throughout the stadium rose and applauded for 60 seconds in tribute to Jota, who wore the No. 18 jersey for Wolves during his time in the Black Country, reports the Mirror. Manchester City (Image: 2025 Getty Images) Jota transferred to Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, spending five years at Anfield, and Liverpool's Premier League curtain-raiser against Bournemouth on Friday also included numerous tributes to Jota. Liverpool boss Arne Slot confessed after the match that he desperately wished he could have turned to Jota from the bench whilst his team hunted for a winner. "Normally at 2-2 everyone knows which player I look to at that moment in time," Slot revealed. "I would have loved to bring in Diogo Jota, but I could not for terrible reasons. But tonight the fans and the players did what he did for us many times in the past." Wolves paid tribute to Diogo Jota (Image: 2025 Catherine Ivill - AMA) Match hero Federico Chiesa, who netted Liverpool's decisive strike to seal a 3-2 triumph, also honoured Jota during his post-match chat, declaring: "[The goal] was a great moment for me, but my thoughts go to Diogo. "I think for what we have seen it was his day. The feeling that the fans gave me, chanting his song all the way through the match. It was very emotional, very emotional for me. I have to say that after the goal my thoughts went to his family, his brother Andre. That's the only thing I could say. "At the end of the day we have to focus on the football. We wanted to win today. It was a difficult match, we went 2-0 up and then they came back, but we showed why we are champions. "Of course Diogo would have helped us a lot but unfortunately he was somewhere else and he helped us in another way."
