sugarcane farmers

Fair and Remunerative Price
(FRP).
The details comes from a bi-weekly report submitted to the ministry of consumer affairs, food and public distribution. The RRC is a legal instrument the sugar commissioner's office uses to ensure farmers receive their dues promptly.
According to the Sugarcane (Control) Order of 1966, mills are legally obligated to pay the FRP within 14 days of can crushing. The RRC empowers district authorities to recover these outstanding payments through auctioning sugar stocks and seizing assets.
For the current 2024-25 crushing season, 200 sugar factories across
Maharashtra
have collectively crushed approximately 85 tonnes of sugar cane. Of the total FRP due, which amounts to Rs22,732 crore (excluding harvesting and transportation costs), Rs752 crore is yet to be paid to farmers.
A senior official from the sugar commissioner's office, while talking to TOI, said while 125 factories have paid 100% of the FRP, 21 factories have paid less than 60%. The office has directed local authorities to engage with these mills to expedite the payment process. Notably, some mills, particularly those in Kolhapur, pay farmers more than the stipulated FRP, which is determined by the sugar recovery rate.
Currently, only one factory has crushing operations ongoing. "The cane crushing was started late and the mill is crushing at a rate of 6,000 tonnes per day. It is located in Pune district and may end crushing in a few days, following which, officially, the crushing season will end," said the official.
In the current season, 80.8 lakh tonnes of sugar has been produced after crushing 852 lakh tonnes of sugar cane. In comparison to last season, there is a dip in sugar production. Around 1,100 lakh tonnes of sugar was produced then. The sugar recovery rate has also dipped from 10.25% in 2023-24 to 9.48% in the ongoing season.

TuluAI to digitise and preserve language
Mangaluru: Upset that his mother tongue finds no space in popular AI platforms, a young techie decided to act. Amrith Ashok Shenava, founder of Flashmates, a real estate tech platform, is preparing to roll out TuluAI, an ambitious project built on their own LLMs and AI tools. He told TOI that the platform will enable users to communicate, learn, and create in Tulu, helping the language stay relevant in the AI era. In 2021, he launched a Tulu translator, followed by a language learning app. TuluAI aims to break language barriers using artificial intelligence. India has nearly 20,000 languages, most of which are not digitised. As a result, users cannot interact with platforms such as ChatGPT, Grok, or Gemini in their native language. "Tulu is my mother tongue, and unfortunately, none of the major LLM-powered AI tools support it. Back in 2021, I developed a Tulu translator, but it had limited utility; this was even before Google introduced support for the language. I actually began exploring this in 2019 when I saw people regularly using Siri and Alexa and felt we needed our own AI. Most existing AI companies cater primarily to US users, and there are very few that focus on building AI solutions for India. At TuluAI, our goal is to build our large language models and AI products that cater to Indian users while also making a global impact," he said. Shenava, who was born and raised in Dubai for 19 yrs before moving to the US, for higher studies at Kent State University, is the founder of Flashmates, a all-in-one real estate tech platorm that now has over two lakh monthly active users across the world. NHAI nod to alter road construction
Thiruvananthapuram: In the wake of a retaining wall collapse at Kooriyad in Malappuram district, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) approved a revised construction method for two sections of NH 66 in the capital district. The changes will be implemented at Pallipuram near Technocity and Mamom bridge near Attingal, where the highway passes through low-lying paddy fields. Pune-based RKC Infrastructure Ltd, the contractor for Kazhakkoottam-Kadampattukonam stretch, submitted a proposal to NHAI recommending a shift from the originally planned elevated embankment construction to a surface-level road. The contractor cited both environmental sensitivity and structural safety for the modification. "Instead of constructing retaining walls, the road will now be built at surface level to minimise soil pressure and improve long-term stability in the marshy terrain," said a source familiar with the project. However, despite intermittent rains, the construction was nearly 50% completed and is expected to be completed in May 2026. Construction work on this critical corridor has been ongoing since May 2025. In total, 13.8km of service road is being developed alongside the main highway, of which nearly 9km has been surfaced. Originally scheduled for completion in Jan 2025, the deadline extended to Oct 2025 and the contractor recently requested a further extension to March 2026, a request deemed unacceptable by both NHAI and state govt. Once fully completed, the 29-km upgraded NH-66 corridor will include four flyovers, 36 culverts, six minor bridges, three vehicle overpasses, five vehicle underpasses, six light-vehicle underpasses, four small-vehicle underpasses, three cattle underpasses, a parallel service road, 20 bus bays and a pedestrian overbridge across the 11.15-km Attingal bypass.
