81 trees axed for constructing college auditorium in Kalaburagi

The Hindu14-07-2025
As many as 81 trees were felled on the Government First Grade College (autonomous) premises for the construction of a proposed auditorium building in Kalaburagi city on Monday.
These trees were located in the two-acre area behind the college building and were razed within a few hours.
This comes just 10 days after the Forest Department had launched 'Hasiru Patha-Karnataka' and 'Hasiru Hejje Kalaburagi' programme in Kalaburagi city, with an aim to plant three crore saplings across the State in a year and to plant 28 lakh saplings in Kalyana Karnataka region for increasing the forest and green cover patch.
Sachin Avati, assistant manager at RITES Ltd., said that the land has been earmarked for constructing a 1,500-capacity auditorium under the SCP/TSP scheme and under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA) at an estimated cost of ₹13.2 crore.
Forest officials T.N. Monappa and Ramesh told The Hindu that college authorities have sought permission for cutting the trees for the auditorium. Initially, the department had suggested to the college authorities to identify alternative land for the project. 'Of the 81 trees marked, we are trying to relocate those that have been there for two to three years, while the bigger trees older than 10 years have to be axed as they require specialised equipment for relocation,' Mr. Monappa said.
Principal Savita Tiwari said that the removal of trees was an unavoidable aspect for the construction of the auditorium. However, expressing dissatisfaction with the decision of cutting down trees on such a large area, Dr. Tiwari said that a mini garden has been established in the college and more trees will be planted in the coming days.

Tripura to install 45 EV charging stations before Durga Puja

Agartala: Tripura govt is set to install 45 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the state before the upcoming Durga Puja festival. This initiative, announced by state power minister Ratan Lal Nath, aims to bolster the use of clean energy in the transport sector. Minister Nath highlighted that this effort aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's broader strategy to reduce India's reliance on fossil fuels and cut greenhouse gas emissions. The Prime Minister's initiatives, including the Solar Mission and the EV Policy, are part of a national commitment to climate resilience and sustainable development. "Smaller states like Tripura are now catching up with the infrastructure needed for electric vehicles," Nath stated, emphasizing the state's commitment to promoting EV usage. In addition to the EV infrastructure, Tripura's railway network is undergoing electrification, with plans to replace diesel engines with electric ones, further reducing the state's carbon footprint. The electrification project is complete and awaits approval from the Railway Board. Nath also pointed out the state's shift towards renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, as natural gas reserves dwindle. The PM-KUSUM scheme is encouraging households to install solar panels, with 694 consumers in Tripura already generating solar power at home. This comprehensive approach underscores Tripura's dedication to a sustainable future, leveraging both government initiatives and local participation to drive the green energy agenda forward. IOA President PT Usha Supports Sports Bill, Says 'It Will Bring In Transparency'

During the discussion on the bill, that was passed by Lok Sabha on Monday, Usha lauded its provisions including the setting up of a National Sports Board (NSB) Indian Olympic Association President P T Usha, who is also a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha, on Tuesday offered her unequivocal support to the National Sports Governance Bill, stating that it will end decades of 'stagnant status quo" and usher in 'transparency and accountability" in the country's sports administration. During the discussion on the bill, which was passed by the Lok Sabha on Monday, Usha praised its provisions, including the establishment of a National Sports Board (NSB) that will have overriding powers to recognise sports federations (NSFs). Affiliation to the NSB would be mandatory for access to central funds. The bill also proposes the creation of a National Sports Tribunal to handle sports disputes and a National Sports Election Panel to oversee NSF elections. 'Today is a day of immense personal and national significance. I have long awaited this moment," Usha, seated alongside fellow nominated member Sudha Murthy, said in her address to the House. She had opposed the bill last year, describing it as government interference and warning that India might face a ban from the International Olympic Committee. However, she revised her views after extensive consultations with Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. 'Let me take you back to 1984, I was just 20 when I missed an Olympic medal in Los Angeles. That day my heart broke… there was no comprehensive sports law to support the dreams we carried in our hearts. 'Since then, four decades have passed and nothing was done to address the stagnant status quo…Today the hope has transformed into action and legislation. It is a visionary and long-overdue bill," she said. 'This bill will usher in transparency, accountability, and gender parity. It will empower athletes and build confidence among sponsors and federations. It is about justice and fair play," she added. Usha said the bill's focus on creating a structured administrative set-up will be beneficial for India's 2036 Olympics bid. 'This legislation comes at a time when India is dreaming big, aiming for its rightful share in the global sporting fraternity by hosting the 2036 Olympics. For Bharat, it is not just a bill, it is a clarion call for action," she said. 'This bill is a critical pillar of a grand vision. Let us see this as a moral promise, a promise that athletes will no longer be let down by an apathetic system. As someone who ran barefoot on clay tracks…I can say that this bill will change lives," she said. She also supported the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, which reasserts the National Anti-Doping Agency's operational independence while establishing a National Anti-Doping Board to advise on procedural issues. 'It is through such effective legislation that we can bring a new culture of clean sports. This bill will illuminate the athletes' path with clarity," Usha said. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
