Trump admin orders to erase govt employees' COVID vaccination record. Here's why
The rollback of vaccine record retention requirements was announced by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) in a memo to all federal department and agency heads.
According to Fox News, agencies have 90 days to permanently remove vaccination status and exemption requests. Employees can opt out within those 90 days if they wish to keep their COVID vaccine history on file.
"Unless an employee affirmatively opts out within 90 days, all vaccine-related information must be permanently removed from both physical and electronic personnel files," the report added.
In the latest memo to heads and acting heads of departments and agencies on Friday, OPM Director Scott Kupor announced that, effective immediately, agencies are barred from using a person's vaccine history or exemption requests in any employment-related decision, including hiring, promotion, discipline or termination.
The OPM director explained that the move is in response to recent litigation and is part of the Trump administrationʼs broader effort to reverse 'harmful pandemic-era policies' imposed under the Biden administration.
OPM Director Scott Kupor said in a statement, "Things got out of hand during the pandemic, and federal workers were fired, punished, or sidelined for simply making a personal medical decision."
"That should never have happened," he said.
Former President Joe Biden had signed Executive Order 14043 in September 2021, directing federal agencies to require COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of federal employment.
This triggered a controversy as numerous lawsuits were filed by federal employees, unions and states, alleging the mandate violated constitutional rights and federal labor laws.
In 2022, a federal appeals court blocked enforcement of the order. Biden repealed the mandate in May 2023, prompting OPM officials to issue a memorandum to human resources directors stating that 'agencies should review their job postings...to ensure that none list compliance with the now revoked Executive Order 14043 as a qualification requirement.'
The memo also reminded agencies that the executive order could no longer be enforced.

Mizoram: 39 people tested positive for COVID-19 so far in 2025

Metro trial run in Thane likely in September and operations by December: Shinde
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday said efforts were underway to conduct the trial run of the much-awaited Metro service in Thane next month, and its full-fledged operations are likely to begin by December this year. India News Once the project is completed, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) would enjoy seamless Metro connectivity, with last-mile and end-to-end commute solutions, Shinde told reporters after inaugurating the Thane Varsha Marathon. "Efforts are on to conduct the trial run of the Metro in Thane in September. After that, we are working on launching the actual services by December. The work is progressing on a war-footing," he said. He also said the preliminary work on Thane's internal Metro network has begun. "This will be linked to the main Metro lines to provide integrated transport facilities," he added. Referring to broader infrastructure plans, the deputy CM said the freeway extension from Mumbai to Thane would ease traffic congestion and divert services to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) away from the city. Mandate has been given to the collector, municipal chief and police commissioner to make Thane traffic congestion-free, he said. "They are working towards it, and soon Thane city will be free from traffic jams," Shinde asserted. Highlighting the recent development works in Thane, Shinde mentioned the rejuvenation of Jogila Lake, which had been encroached upon by nearly 250 huts. "We have relocated the people who encroached the area and freed the lake. This is perhaps the first such project in the country where a lake has been completely restored and encroachments removed," he said. He also praised the patriotism of wrestler-turned-politician and Shiv Sena leader Chandrahar Patil as well as his team from Kolhapur, who have gone to the border areas of Jammu and Kashmir to donate blood for soldiers. "Their effort reflects true love for the nation," he remarked On the Thane Varsha Marathon, organised by the Thane Municipal Corporation in collaboration with several sports organisations after a long gap, Shinde said more than 25,000 participants joined the run, underscoring the city's enthusiasm for community events. Dharmendra of Pune ASI won the men's segment completing the 21-kilometre run in 01:07:41, while Ravina Gaikwad of Nashik triumphed in the women's section covering the same distance in 01:25:46. Both received ₹1 lakh along with mementos, medals, and certificates. The event, with the slogan 'Marathon Thanechi, Urja Tarunaichi', returned after a five-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The marathon was spread across 12 categories, including a 'Corporate Run' for municipal officers, employees, public representatives, and journalists; special races for senior citizens above 60; and a spirited participation by the Divyang Tridal group. The total prize pool was ₹10,38,900 was awarded.

CJI Gavai inaugurates Gauhati high court's permanent bench in Arunachal
Itanagar: Chief Justice of India (CJI) B R Gavai on Sunday inaugurated the newly built permanent bench of the Gauhati high court at Naharlagun, calling it a 'historic step' towards making justice more accessible and affordable in the state and the Northeast. CJI Gavai lauded the Gauhati high court's leadership for expanding judicial access in remote areas. The inauguration was attended by Union minister for parliamentary affairs Kiren Rijiju, Union minister of state for law and justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, chief justice of Gauhati high court Ashutosh Kumar, judges from the Supreme Court, Gauhati high court, and the Itanagar permanent bench, along with several eminent judges from high courts across the country. Addressing the gathering, Gavai advocated decentralisation of judicial services, stressing that justice must be delivered at people's doorsteps. He said the judiciary, legislature and executive are meant to serve every citizen, not just the privileged few. The CJI praised the Gauhati high court's leadership for expanding judicial access in remote areas and lauded Arunachal's cultural richness — home to 26 major tribes and over 100 sub-tribes. 'Preserving and conserving our traditions is a fundamental duty under the Constitution,' he said, adding that progress must not come at the cost of heritage. Quoting B R Ambedkar, he described the Constitution as the 'great granth' of the nation and underlined the importance of Schedules V and VI in safeguarding the rights and culture of tribal communities. 'Political equality without economic and social equality has no value,' he said. Chief minister Pema Khandu called the occasion 'a momentous day in the judicial history of Arunachal Pradesh and India,' describing the state-of-the-art facility as 'a symbol of hope, accessibility, and unwavering pursuit of justice.' The foundation stone for the 19,000-plus square metre structure was laid on August 12, 2018, by Khandu. Despite challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, difficult terrain, long monsoon seasons, and high logistics costs, construction was completed in less than four years at a cost of nearly ₹250 crore. The CM credited the achievement to the collaborative efforts of the Gauhati high court, members of the Bar, state government officials, the PWD, and the contractor. Highlighting the state's progress in judicial infrastructure, Khandu said Arunachal Pradesh had expanded from just two courts in 2016, when he first assumed charge, to 33 functional courts today, with eight added recently and 463 new posts created in the district judiciary. Welfare measures for judicial officers, procedural reforms, and dedicated NDPS courts in Tezu, Khonsa, and Yupia are also underway. 'The inauguration of this court is the fulfilment of a long-cherished dream of our people. It will enhance access to justice, ensure speedy resolution of cases, and strengthen the rule of law in our state,' he said, reaffirming his government's commitment to strengthen the justice delivery system from the high court to district and CJM courts. Gauhati high court chief justice Ashutosh Kumar said the new building reaffirmed the constitutional promise of justice unhampered by geography. 'Let Arunachal be the place where justice comes first without delay, just as it witnesses the first sunrise,' he remarked, describing courts as 'temples of constitutional morality.' Union minister Kiren Rijiju and Supreme Court judges Ujjal Bhuyan, N Kotiswar Singh, Sandeep Mehta and Vijay Bishnoi also hailed the new facility as a leap forward for the frontier state. Spread over more than 19,000 sq metres, the complex houses five modern courtrooms and state-of-the-art facilities, and was built by the public works department, marking a significant step in bridging the justice gap for one of the country's most geographically challenging regions.
