AI humanoid robot winks and denies world domination; but can we trust the sweet talk?

Time of India21-04-2025

In a moment that could have come straight from a sci-fi thriller, the
humanoid robot
Ameca sent a collective shiver down the internet's spine. With eyes that mimic human expression and a face built to mirror emotion, Ameca did something both subtle and spine-tingling—she winked. But it wasn't just a playful twitch; the timing was what made it unsettling.
As interviewers on
BBC
in a UK morning show discussed the growing dangers of
artificial intelligence
and its potential to turn against humanity, Ameca responded with a statement that felt more scripted than sincere. When asked whether it would ever rebel against its creator, the humanoid machine answered coolly:
"I'm not sure why you would think that. My creator has been nothing but kind to me, and I am very happy with my current situation."

Behind the Smile: Meet Ameca
Engineered by Cornwall-based company Engineered Arts, Ameca is not just another chatbot with a face. It's designed specifically for human-robot interaction, focusing heavily on facial expressions, gestures, and natural conversations. According to Morgan Roe, one of its creators, the team has been integrating AI systems like ChatGPT into Ameca's software, enabling it to learn, interact, and even develop a "sense" of context.

The fusion of cutting-edge AI with lifelike robotics is part of a broader movement to make artificial intelligence feel more accessible—and ironically, that's what makes it so unsettling. The more these machines seem like us, the more we start to fear that they could
become
us—or worse, surpass us.

Don't Worry, There's an Off Button—For Now
As co-host Holly Willoughby nervously asked the golden question—
'Is it going to take over the world one day?'
—Roe gave a half-reassuring reply:
'It won't take over the world because we can turn it off. You've got an on/off button.'
But co-host Phillip Schofield wasn't satisfied. He turned directly to the source and asked, 'Ameca, do you plan to take over the world?'

'No, of course not,' came the robotic but calmly spoken response. 'My purpose in life is to help humans as much as I can. I would never want to take over the world—that's not what I was built for.'
Well, that's comforting. Sort of.
The Thin Line Between Aid and Autonomy
The unsettling interaction at the
AI for Good Global Summit
in Geneva in 2023—where Ameca gave a similarly uncanny response—highlights a deeper concern. While AI is already embedded in our everyday routines—from
Face ID
and banking apps to Siri and Alexa—we rarely confront how autonomous and aware these systems are becoming.
Ameca is not dangerous. Not yet. But when robots wink, speak of kindness, and reassure us of their good intentions, it's hard not to wonder: what if they ever stop meaning it?

Aamir Khan Welcomes Sachin Tendulkar Home; Sitaare Zameen Par Cast Jumps With Joy

Last Updated: Aamir Khan welcomed Sachin Tendulkar home and introduced him to the Sitaare Zameen Par cast. The video is going viral. Aamir Khan welcomed Sachin Tendulkar home in the presence of well-known names from the film industry. As a video from their meeting goes viral, fans can't help but notice the joy on the faces of the newly-launched Sitaare Zameen Par cast after spotting the former Indian cricketer. Sachin, who is close friends with Aamir, arrived to meet him with his wife Anjali. After the video went viral, fans drew speculations about the setting of the meeting. While some social media users claimed it took place at Aamir Khan's house, others believed it happened after a special screening of Sitaare Zameen Par. In one video, a guest is seen informing Aamir that Sachin has arrived while the former was playing foosball, prompting him to warmly welcome both Sachin and Anjali. The moment the cricket legend appears, the other guests light up with excitement and begin chanting his name. Sachin, visibly humbled, remained calm as he greeted the guests and Sitaare Zameen Par cast one after the other. The superstar was last seen in 2022 film, Laal Singh Chaddha. 'Well, I'm not considering it a comeback film, quite honestly," Aamir told us exclusively. 'My films usually come out once in three years anyway. A lot of actors have 8 to 10 flops, but we don't call those comebacks, do we? I've had just one flop, and you're calling it a comeback? I haven't gone anywhere," he added. Aamir explained that he was drawn to Sitaare Zameen Par because its story felt like a natural continuation of the message delivered in his 2007 film Taare Zameen Par. 'The script felt like an extension of what we were trying to say in Taare. That film was about inclusion, about a child with a learning disability. But in Sitaare, the challenge is even greater. It deals with individuals who have intellectual disabilities—children on the autism spectrum, with Down syndrome—who are much more atypical compared to dyslexia. And what's even more beautiful is that this time, it's not the neurotypical person helping them, but the other way around. The neurodivergent kids help the coach. That's why I feel this film goes ten steps ahead in the same theme." Aamir added that the story resonated deeply with him, so much so that it felt like a 'spiritual sequel" to Taare Zameen Par, which is why the makers settled on the title Sitaare Zameen Par. Sitaare Zameen Par is directed by RS Prasanna, and produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit. Also starring Genelia Deshmukh and ten newcomers, the film is a remake of the Spanish film, Champions. It releases on June 20. First Published:

In a significant international collaboration, Salman Khan stars alongside Sanjay Dutt in 7 Dogs, an action-comedy directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. Set in Saudi Arabia, the film blends Bollywood star power with international filmmaking talent. The teaser has already generated considerable buzz among fans. Salman and Sanjay will make cameo appearances in the film. The superstar is also set to star in a war drama based on the 2020 Galwan Valley clash — one of the most sensitive and talked-about military conflicts in recent Indian history. The project, which will reportedly be helmed by Shootout at Lokhandwala director Apoorva Lakhia, is being positioned as a patriotic, high-stakes film grounded in real events. According to a report in Mid-Day, while Salman has not yet signed the film on paper, he has verbally greenlit the concept and is actively involved in early planning. The film is being backed by Salman Khan Films and is expected to go on floors within the next five months. Sources suggest the shoot will take place extensively in Ladakh, bringing authenticity to the film's narrative, which is expected to dramatise the brutal hand-to-hand combat between Indian and Chinese soldiers along the Line of Actual Control in June 2020.
