'Odisha bandh' call over student's self-immolation as Opposition unites in protest

Hindustan Times15-07-2025
At least eight political parties, including the Congress, have called for 'Odisha bandh' over the death of an Odisha student due to self-immolation, reported news agency ANI. Police personnel investigate after a female student allegedly set herself on fire over sexual harassment at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College, in Balasore district, Odisha. (PTI file)
The development came hours after Congress and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) workers held protests in Bhubaneswar outside AIIMS, where the student was being treated since Saturday, July 12.
The 20-year-old student of Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore set herself on fire last week, claiming that no action was taken on the alleged sexual harassment by a professor in her college. Days after she sustained 95 per cent burn injuries, the student was declared dead on late Monday night.
Protesting outside AIIMS in Bhunaeswar, parties alleged a cover-up by the state government, and sought the sacking of Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj.
"Why was the postmortem done at night? The body was brought at night so that no one would come to know," said BJD leader Sulata Deo.
She also said that a delegation of BJD leaders met President Droupadi Murmu, seeking her intervention in the matter.
"It is shameful that atrocities are being done against women and tribals in Odisha...If such a thing is happening in the temples of education, then where should a woman go...When the President got to know about this incident, she showed concern," Deo said.
Congress leader Yashir Nawaz also questioned the timing of the postmortem report, and said, "We are protesting because they are conducting the post-mortem at 2 am. The government, with the help of the police, want to take the body away after the postmortem."
Meanwhile, BJD leader Snehangini Chhuria also lashed out at the BJP-led state government in Odisha, and said, "Now, the slogan of 'beti bachao beti padhao' has turned to 'beti padhao beti jalao' in Odisha."
According to a bulletin by AIIMS Bhubaneswar, the Odisha student was declared dead at 11:46 pm on Monday, two days after she was brought to the hospital by her friend and was "resuscitated with IV fluids, IV antibiotics, intubated and put on mechanical ventilation".
Hours before she died, President Murmu visited her at the hospital assured her parents all help in her treatment.
After the student's death, Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi vowed stringent action against those involved and wrote on X, 'I assure the family that all those guilty will face the strictest punishment as per the law."
The victim was a second-year student of B.Ed (integrated) at the college. She set herself on fire a day after Samir Kumar Sahu, the head of the educational department against whom she had levelled sexual harassment allegations, was given a clean chit by the Internal Complaints Committee of the institution.
She had alleged that the education department head made sexual advances against her and threatened to fail her in exams if she rejected them. She said she had apprised CM Majhi, union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, national commission for women as well as district police officials about it.

Handing over of sanitation works to contractors strongly opposed

Nellore: The workers of Nellore Municipal Corporation on Sunday took part in a rally under the aegis of the Andhra Pradesh Workers and Employees Union (APW&EU) protesting against handing over of sanitary works in the 9th division to contractors. The rally was taken out from Jyotirao Phule statue to CPM office located at Balaji Nagar centre in the city. On the occasion, the protesters raised slogans against the TDP-led coalition government for handing over the works in Nellore Municipal Corporation to private persons. Speaking on the occasion, APW&EU honorary president K Srinivasulu said that during the YSRCP regime, workers discharged duties under outsourcing concept and under the banner of Andhra Pradesh Corporation For Outsourced Services (APCOS) receiving the salaries directly from the government exchequer. He alleged that after the coalition government came to power in 2024 elections, government brought the workers under private system by abolishing the APCOS only due to political reasons. He criticised Minister of Municipal Administration and Urban Development Ponguru Narayana for introducing the system of handing over the works to private persons. He said that such a system will lead to workers losing their rights as they would become slaves to the private contractors. He warned of intensifying the stir at the State-level if the government fails to rollback such a system.

Shashi Tharoor Not On Op Sindoor Debate List, Congress Sources Say He Declined

New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor evaded a question on whether he would speak during the special discussion in the Parliament on Operation Sindoor today, amid reports that he is not among the speakers chosen by his Congress party. Mr Tharoor was in the Parliament complex ahead of the resumption of the Monsoon session when an NDTV journalist asked him if he was among the speakers who would lead the charge against the government over the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor. The MP from Thiruvananthapuram walked away without answering, only to turn back when a colleague, Renuka Chowdhury, called him. The reporters present there then turned to Ms Chowdhury and asked her if she would like Mr Tharoor to speak in the Parliament today. "He is constitutionally empowered to speak anywhere. Who am I to give permission?" she replied. Mr Tharoor had led arguably the most important delegation to the US during the outreach initiative following Op Sindoor - a move that is believed to have intensified an apparent rift between the senior leader and the Congress leadership.

‘Linguistic terror': Mamata Banerjee alleges Bengali migrant's family beaten up by Delhi Police

Reiterating her accusation that the Bharatiya Janata Party has unleashed ' linguistic terrorism ' against Bengali speakers, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday alleged that a Bengali migrant worker's family was harassed and tortured by the police in Delhi. The chief minister shared a video on social media in which a man can be heard accusing the Delhi Police of beating his wife and infant son. 'Atrocious!! Terrible!! See how Delhi Police brutally beat up a kid and his mother, members of a migrant family from Malda's Chanchal,' Banerjee wrote. 'Even a child is not spared from the cruelty of violence in the regime of linguistic terror unleashed by the BJP in the country against the Bengalis!' It is unclear when the purported video was recorded. Banerjee's statement came on the day that the Trinamool Congress launched the 'Bhasha Andolan', a campaign against the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking persons in BJP-ruled states. The Trinamool Congress chief had announced the protest on July 21 at the party's annual Martyrs' Day rally in Kolkata, saying that the fight to protect the Bengali language and identity would continue until the BJP was voted out. Assembly elections in West Bengal are expected to take place in March or April 2026. Her remarks also come amid Indian authorities pursuing a policy over the past month to 'push' individuals claimed to be undocumented migrants into Bangladesh. Many of those forced out of the country claim that they are Indian citizens. Reports of migrant workers from West Bengal living in BJP-ruled states, including Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Delhi, being detained and deported under allegations that they were Bangladeshi citizens have also emerged. India has forced more than 2,000 persons, alleged to be undocumented migrants, into Bangladesh since the country launched ' Operation Sindoor ', a military operation against terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The legality of the 'push back' policy has been debated in India and internationally. Experts have told Scroll that the policy violated India's obligations under international law and customary international law. In June, four men from West Bengal, who had been picked up by the Maharashtra Police and forced into Bangladesh, were brought back on June 15. The Murshidabad Police in West Bengal had presented proof of them being Indian citizens. On July 16, the Calcutta High Court asked the Union government if there was truth to the claims that Bengali-speaking persons were being deported to Bangladesh.
