The decision, announced during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference on July 27, has ignited a flurry of fascination, admiration, and healthy scepticism across Chinese social media. According to a report from South China Morning Post, developed jointly by the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology and DroidUp Robotics, Xueba 01 stands 1.75 metres tall, weighs around 30 kilograms, and can physically interact with people. Dressed in a crisp shirt, trousers, and glasses, with silicone skin designed for nuanced facial expressions, the robot even communicates fluently in Mandarin.
This cybernetic scholar's name borrows from a Chinese slang term, xueba , which refers to an academically gifted student. And the name is proving apt. Xueba 01 is now set to embark on a four-year doctoral journey at the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA), one of China's top institutions for the performing arts, with a focus on traditional Chinese opera.

According to Shangguan News , Xueba 01 will study under Professor Yang Qingqing, a respected Shanghai-based artist. The robot's curriculum is as ambitious as any human student's: stage performance, scriptwriting, set design, motion control, and language generation. But Yang sees more than just a technical marvel. Recalling a rehearsal session where Xueba 01 mimicked the legendary 'orchid fingers' gesture of Peking opera icon Mei Lanfang, Yang shared that human students instinctively mirrored the robot's movement. 'When Xueba 01 interacts with his classmates, it is not a cold machine meeting humans, but an aesthetic exchange across species,' said Yang. The robot calls itself an 'AI artist,' aspiring to forge friendships, exchange ideas on scripts, assist in choreography, and even play calming white noise for stressed peers. If he completes the programme successfully, he could become an opera director in a museum or theatre—or even launch his own AI art studio. While many see Xueba 01's admission as a groundbreaking step in blending art and technology, the move has also sparked a spirited online debate. 'Chinese opera needs rich expressions and a unique voice,' one student wrote on social media. 'Can a robot really make the cut?' In a witty response, Xueba 01 said, 'If I fail to graduate, my system and data might get downgraded or deleted. Professor Yang said if I don't finish my PhD, they'll donate me to a museum. That sounds pretty cool too. At least I'll be part of art history!' Still, not everyone is amused. Some users questioned whether the resources spent on the robot could have been allocated to real students, pointing out that some arts PhD candidates in China earn less than 3,000 yuan (US$420) a month. Others questioned the emotional depth of AI-generated art, arguing that lived human experience remains irreplaceable in creative expression. An earlier version of Xueba 01 once ran a humanoid half-marathon, bagging third place. But this latest leap—into the realm of opera scripts and theatrical nuance—might be his most daring yet. 'Xueba 01 is taking on a milestone challenge in human-robot relations,' said one online observer. 'We've finally reached the point of living and learning alongside robots. I hope he does well.'

Operation Sindoor Fallout: What Is CENTAIC and Why India Can't Ignore China-Pak AI War Network
New Delhi: China's growing defence collaboration with Pakistan has evolved beyond traditional hardware support and joint exercises. This was evident during the three-day military exchange following India's Operation Sindoor. What stood out was the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) as a strategic enabler. Pakistan's AI-driven military infrastructure, particularly the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Computing (CENTAIC), appears to be at the centre of this transformation. On July 29, Leader of Opposition (Lok Sabha) Rahul Gandhi referred to the CENTAIC during his address in Parliament. He questioned whether the government was even aware of the extent of military integration between China and Pakistan. He alleged that CENTAIC, which was established in 2020 with Chinese assistance, plays a role in linking the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) with China's People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) through AI-powered data exchange systems. The CENTAIC remains largely out of public view despite being around for nearly five years. However, its role has been amplified by recent claims that Pakistan received real-time battlefield intelligence from China during Operation Sindoor. Citing Lt General Rahul Singh, Gandhi told Parliament that Pakistan's ability to identify Indian military vectors with such precision suggests a deeper intelligence-sharing framework, possibly routed through CENTAIC. Defence analysts confirm that the CENTAIC is central to the PAF's Multi-Domain Operations (MDO) strategy. This involves fusing terrestrial, airborne and space-based sensor data to create real-time battlefield awareness. The effort also receives backing from Turkey and is driven largely from the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex in Kamra and the National University of Sciences and Technology in Islamabad. The CENTAIC was officially announced by the PAF in August 2020. The stated aim was to harness AI for both military and civilian applications. PAF Chief Air Chief Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan had then expressed hope that the CENTAIC would reshape air force operations. According to the Toronto-based defence portal Quwa, the CENTAIC explores areas such as big data, machine learning, predictive analytics and natural language processing (NLP). These technologies are becoming important for modern air combat, especially in next-generation fighter programmes such as Pakistan's 'Project Azm'. Though official documentation does not mention Chinese involvement explicitly, the CENTAIC is seen as a platform that allows Pakistan to enter into bilateral research and development partnerships. Observers believe that China has remained an influential partner, supporting the AI transition in a strategic attempt to bolster the PAF's autonomy and capabilities. Technologies being developed at the CENTAIC could help Pakistan achieve self-reliance in critical software-driven defence systems like missile guidance, sensor fusion and advanced pilot-machine interfaces. These technologies are rarely available off-the-shelf. The CENTAIC's ability to indigenously develop them could help Pakistan reduce its dependency on external suppliers. One of the most important areas the CENTAIC is believed to be working on is sensor fusion. By aggregating data from multiple sources such as radars, IR sensors or optical cameras, this capability offers enhanced battlefield visibility. Similarly, machine learning models could be applied to electronic warfare, flight path optimization and smart missile control systems. A subset of ML, deep learning could lead to drone autonomy and intelligent seeker heads in missiles. The ability to predict aircraft maintenance needs through predictive analytics is also under study. This would help ensure higher availability of key platforms like the JF-17 fighter. The NLP could allow cockpit systems to communicate directly with pilots in real-time, improving situational responses in complex combat scenarios. The broader aim appears to align CENTAIC's work with the PAF's ambition to field a sixth-generation fighter under 'Project Azm'. If successful, the CENTAIC could turn Pakistan into not only a user but also a developer of cutting-edge combat aviation technology. Experts highlight that CENTAIC's creation followed a steady pattern of increasing China-Pakistan air force cooperation post-2019. After the Balakot strike, Pakistan enhanced military ties with China. In December 2020, Chinese Defence Minister Wei Fenghe visited Islamabad and signed fresh defence agreements. Integration of radar and command systems between both countries' air forces reportedly increased during this period. Pakistan's HQ-9P and HQ-16FE missile acquisitions were part of this integration wave. Key radar systems in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir are now said to be integrated with China's southern air defence grid. By 2020, Pakistan had also set up the National Aerospace Science and Technology Park (NASTP) and the CENTAIC as its dual AI hubs, with an eye on battlefield dominance through cognitive AI and electronic warfare. The CENTAIC may not be well-known publicly, but it represents a potent shift in how wars in South Asia could be fought in the near future. With AI forming the backbone of decision-making, surveillance and combat systems, India must consider this integration seriously. Awareness of CENTAIC's mission and its connections with China's military intelligence ecosystem could prove vital to shaping future defence strategies.

Samsung orders 5-day office return for chip staff, adds tool to track coffee badging: Report
Samsung has quietly joined the growing corporate wave of return-to-office mandates, and it's not just asking politely. The tech giant has now rolled out a full five-day office requirement for a section of its US-based semiconductor workforce, and to make sure everyone's showing up, it's launching a compliance tool to track attendance. Yes, even the 'coffee badgers', people who swipe in for a latte and disappear, are officially on to internal emails seen by Business Insider, Samsung implemented the new in-office rule back in July and is closely monitoring how it plays out. The company previously operated under a more flexible policy that allowed employees to work remotely up to two days a week, but that's now been dialled down for select teams.'We look forward to a more consistently full campus environment, where innovation and collaboration can happen in real time,' Samsung wrote in an April email to staff. 'We appreciate our team members' understanding as we evolve certain policies to support this goal.' In a follow-up email sent in August, HR described the early signs as promising. 'The first few weeks have indeed shown increased traffic on campus with parking stations staying full, cafeteria food consumption on the rise, and more smiling faces can be seen in the hallways,' it not everyone seems to be playing along just yet. The same email hinted that compliance could still improve: 'While our absolute attendance number will never be 100 per cent due to a variety of factors including PTO and business travel, we do expect greater presence across all employee populations.'To nudge things along, Samsung is rolling out a new internal tool for managers to track on-site presence. The email calls it a 'V1' version and says it will offer visibility into how many days and hours each employee is spending in the building. That includes spotting those who try to game the system with quick check-ins before vanishing, aka 'lunch/coffee badging'.'This tool will provide each Manager with visibility to the number of days and time in building metrics for each team member,' the email stated. 'This will ensure that team members are fulfilling their expectations regarding in office work, however that is defined with their business leader, as well as guarding against instances of lunch/coffee badging.'Though the tool is functional, it's not perfect yet. Samsung admits that it can't currently integrate time off (PTO) data because it's housed on a different platform. There's hope for a future version that does, but for now, managers are encouraged to use the tool as a conversation starter rather than a hard enforcement nuances like customer visits, business travel or occasional exceptions are also unlikely to be included in future updates.
