Nearly $500K in contraband tobacco seized at Cornwall, Ont. border this spring

The RCMP says it has seized hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of tobacco and made several arrests at the Cornwall, Ont. border crossing this spring.
Police announced Wednesday officers apprehended approximately $497,419 worth of contraband tobacco products coming into Canada from New York State between April 1 and June 30 of this year.
The products include 194,610 cigars, 214,240 cigarettes, 480 nicotine pouches, 1,100 e-cigarette vapes, and 590 cannabis vapes.
The seizures were made through the Cornwall Regional Task Force (CRTF), made up of the RCMP, Ontario Provincial Police, Canada Border Services Agency and the Ontario Ministry of Finance.
'These seizures reflect the evolving and increasingly sophisticated threats at our borders and our unwavering commitment to meet them head-on,' said Insp. Etienne Thauvette, officer in charge of the RCMP's Cornwall detachment, in a news release.
A 43-year-old man from Hogansburg, N.Y. was charged with two counts of violating the Excise Act for allegedly crossing the border with 1,100 e-cigarettes and 590 cannabis vapes on March 26.
A pair of 25- and 27-year-old men from Ohsweken, Ont. were charged under the Excise Act for allegedly possessing 150,000 unstamped cigarettes on April 4. The 25-year-old was also charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act for suspected cocaine.
A 46-year-old woman of Fort Covington, N.Y. was charged for allegedly possessing 180,000 unstamped cigars on April 4.
A 22-year-old from Stouffville, Ont. was charged under the Excise Act and Customs Act for allegedly possessing 8,610 unstamped cigars and 480 nicotine pouches on April 9.
A 23-year-old from Ajax, Ont. and a 22-year-old of Stouffville, Ont. were charged under the Excise Act for allegedly possessing 6,000 unstamped cigars on May 20.
A 69-year-old man from Cornwall, Ont. was charged for allegedly possessing 54,240 unstamped cigars on June 2.
'Revenues from contraband tobacco often support organized crime activities, such as drug trafficking, human trafficking, and firearms smuggling,' the RCMP said.
Anyone with information related to smuggling, drug importation, trafficking, or possession is asked to contact the Ontario RCMP at 1-800-387-0020, the confidential CBSA Border Watch toll-free line at 1-888-502-9060 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

The man has been charged with five counts of possession of property obtained by crime worth more than $5,000. He was released on an appearance notice with a court date of Oct. 29. Police also praised their BEAR (break, enter and robbery) unit in the release, saying they 'demonstrated investigative skill and dedication in connecting a series of property-related crimes that occurred across the province.' 'Through evidence collection, analysis, and collaboration with partnering agencies, they identified and arrested the individual believed to be responsible for these offences,' police said. 'Their diligent efforts not only brought a suspect into custody but also led to the recovery of approximately $200,000 worth of stolen property, returning valuable items to their rightful owners and reinforcing our commitment to community safety and well-being.'

22-year-old Tyrique Harmer of Hamilton alongside 21-year-old Maria Toth-Taddeo of Toronto charged in connection to a human trafficking investigation (TPS photos). Toronto police say they have arrested two people following a human trafficking investigation involving two underage female victims. The investigation began in June, as members of the Human Trafficking Unit began looking into allegations that two women, aged 14 and 17, were trafficked through a 'combination of deception, coercion, and control.' Police say the accused created online ads for sexual services, took sexualized pictures of the victims, transported them to hotels to meet clients, and kept the money they earned. On Thursday, officers arrested the suspects who are from both Hamilton and Toronto. The first suspect, 22-year-old Tyrique Harmer, is charged with trafficking persons under 18, possession of a weapon, publishing and possessing child pornography, and advertising another person's sexual services, in addition to several other offences. The second suspect, 21-year-old Maria Toth-Taddeo of Toronto, faces the same charges along with several other offences. Police say they believe there may be additional victims and are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.

Officers launched an investigation in July, after members of the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) made them aware of information involving a London man dating back to 2020 involving multiple online applications. On Wednesday, Aug. 13, a search warrant was executed at a residence on King Street. A male suspect was arrested. Police seized electronic devices. Police say evidence of suspected child pornography was located on the devices. As a result of the investigation, the London man has been charged with one count of unlawfully possess child pornography. The accused remains in custody and is expected to appear in London court on Sept. 18. Anyone with information in relation to this incident is asked to call the London Police Service at (519) 661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Information can also be sent in online anonymously to London Middlesex Crime Stoppers
