Oppn seeks rly min's sacking, blames influx of migrants for overcrowding
Mumbai: While CM Devendra Fadnavis described the incident where eight passengers fell off a local train as unfortunate, minister Girish Mahajan said the state govt would give Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased.
State Cong press chief Harshwardhan Sapkal demanded the resignation of railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for the local train accident in which four people lost their lives in Thane district. Sapkal also demanded a compensation of Rs 25 lakh for the families of the deceased. He claimed that the Central and state govts were responsible for the local train accident.
Sapkal accused the railway minister of being ignorant about improving facilities and demanded his resignation.
In a post on X, he condoled the deaths and said that for the last 11 years, the people of Maharashtra and Mumbai have been listening to empty talk about infrastructure and ease of travel for Mumbaikars. MNS president Raj Thackeray blamed the influx of migrants from other states to Mumbai for the "collapse" of the railway system.
Raj also questioned the rationale for demanding the installation of automatic door closure mechanisms in local trains, considering the rush of commuters.

NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar has appealed to the Central Railway administration to implement measures like installing automatic doors in suburban trains in view of overcrowding. "A flood of people coming to Mumbai from outside led to the collapse of the railway system. But everyone is busy campaigning for elections," Pawar said.
"It is very unfortunate that a total of eight passengers fell from a local train between Diva-Mumbra station and some of them lost their lives.
The railway administration is probing the cause of the accident," CM Fadnavis said.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray said the incident is extremely heartbreaking. "The unfortunate death of some passengers who were standing at the door of a local train heading towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus between Diva-Mumbra station was caused by an express train coming from the opposite direction. This incident is extremely heartbreaking.
Emotional tribute to the deceased passengers," Aaditya said in a post on X.
"I am very disturbed by a terrible accident this morning near the Mumbra station. Thousands of travellers come from this route every morning. I am involved in the misery of the family of the deceased. Instructions have been directed to the hospitals in Thane and Kalwa. I have also talked to the doctor myself. It is an unfortunate incident that an inquiry into the accident has been launched by the railway and it will immediately be confronted by the inquiry," said DCM Eknath Shinde.

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has set a firm Nov 2026 deadline for the completion of the long-delayed Shongtong-Karcham hydroelectric project, saying the 450-MW plant will generate Rs 1,000 crore in annual revenue and strengthen the state's green energy ambitions. He claimed that the govt was assessing the total expenditure incurred on other major hydropower projects — including Dhaulasidh, Luhri, and Sunni — with plans to resume and regulate their construction under state-led terms. "Unlike the previous BJP govt, which compromised state interests, we are prioritising Himachal Pradesh's control over its energy assets," Sukhu said. Industries minister Harshwardhan Chauhan says Centre not distributing charity to Himachal
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh industries minister Harshwardhan Chauhan on Monday said that the central govt is not distributing charity to Himachal Pradesh, but the state is only getting its share, like all other 29 states of the country. Responding to the statements made by BJP MPs Anurag Thakur, Suresh Kashyap, and others that the central govt is providing sufficient funds to Himachal, the industries minister clarified that if Himachal is getting funds under the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, or MGNREGA, it is the right of the state. "It is not the case that Himachal started getting these funds only when the BJP came to power in the Centre. Himachal used to get the same funds even when the previous govt was at the Centre as per the set pattern," he added. The minister, however, accused the central govt of not releasing funds to the state govt, especially around Rs 10,000 crore under the post-disaster needs assessment (PDNA), though the state govt sent the claims to the Centre in the financial year 2023-24. He claimed that the central govt is indirectly benefiting other states ruled by the BJP or its allies. Teachers' associations want rollback of 3-lang policy
Pune: Over 20 associations and groups working in the education sector have written to the state govt asking it to scrap the recently introduced compulsory third language in Stds I to V and revert to the two-language policy adopted until now. Schools are set reopen for the new academic year on June 16. The controversy started when govt issued an order on April 16 stating that Hindi will be compulsory as the third language. When it ran into opposition, school education minister Dada Bhuse, on April 22, announced that Hindi was not compulsory, it could be any other language. However, teachers' associations and education experts have told govt to scrap the three-language policy until Std V and issue a fresh GR to this effect. Mahendra Ganpule, spokesperson for Maharashtra School Principals' Federation, said, "Until now, in local body-run schools, Marathi was the first language and English the second or vice versa. Hindi was added in Std VI. We want that system to continue."
