Ukraine peace: Zelenskyy, EU leaders arrive at White House to meet Trump

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, along with several European leaders, arrived at the White House on Monday evening (IST) to meet US President Donald Trump and discuss a peace deal with Russia. The meeting comes days after Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in a historic summit in Alaska in a bid to end Moscow's three-year war in Ukraine. Trump and Zelenskyy will begin the day with a private meeting. They will later be joined by European leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Nato's new Secretary General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will also be in attendance. Key issues on the table Russia has demanded that Ukraine give up the Donbas region and officially recognise Crimea, which Moscow annexed in 2014. Trump recently posted that Zelenskyy 'can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to". However, Zelenskyy rejected these terms. Ukraine's Constitution forbids surrendering territory and Kyiv has only hinted at accepting a freeze of current battle lines. At present, Russia controls around 20 per cent of Ukraine's territory. Europe's concerns and Russia's strikes European leaders fear that if Moscow succeeds in Ukraine, it may threaten other countries in the region. Their worries grew further on Sunday when a Russian drone strike on Kharkiv killed six people, including two children, and injured 20 more, Associated Press reported. Meanwhile, Russia reported that it intercepted 23 Ukrainian drones overnight across its territory and in Crimea. Borders cannot be changed by force: EU European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Sunday that 'Ukraine's territorial decisions cannot be taken without Ukraine at the table". She also backed strong security guarantees for Kyiv, saying the country must become 'a steel porcupine' against invasions. She furthr pledged tougher sanctions on Russia and promised to expand support for Ukraine's defence industry. Trump-Putin talks in Alaska On Friday, Trump held nearly three hours of talks with Putin in Alaska. Both leaders called the discussions 'productive' though no agreement was reached. Trump highlighted the need to reduce civilian casualties, saying, 'We're going to stop 5,000, 6,000, 7,000 people a week from being killed, and President Putin wants to see that as much as I do.' He said that while some progress was made, unresolved issues remain. 'There's no deal until there's a deal,' Trump said, promising to brief NATO allies and Zelenskyy. Putin also praised the talks, calling them 'constructive'. He claimed the war would not have started if Trump had been president in 2022. Putin's invitation to Trump At the Alaska press conference, Putin invited Trump to Moscow for future talks. 'Next time in Moscow,' Putin said. Trump responded,'That's an interesting one. I'll get a little heat on that one, but I can see it possibly happening.' While no breakthrough was announced, both sides confirmed that progress had been made and discussions would continue. PM Modi chairs high-level meeting to discuss roadmap for next-generation reforms

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday chaired a high-level meeting to deliberate on the roadmap for next-generation reforms aimed at speedy and comprehensive reforms that will enhance Ease of Living, improve Ease of Doing Business, and foster inclusive prosperity. PM Modi also talked of GST reforms and said this Diwali will be "double Diwali" for people.(X/@narendramodi) "Chaired a meeting to discuss the roadmap for Next-Generation Reforms. We are committed to speedy reforms across all sectors, which will boost Ease of Living, Ease of Doing Business and prosperity," Prime Minister said in a post on X. In his Independence Day address, PM Modi said the government has decided to constitute a task force for next-generation reforms. "This task force will complete its work within a set timeframe. Current rules, laws, policies, and procedures must be re-drafted to suit the 21st century, to fit the global environment, and to align with the vision of making Bharat a developed nation by 2047. The task force has been created to accomplish this within the prescribed period," he had said. "These reforms will give courage to all those who wish to shape their future. Be it our start-ups, our small industries, or our cottage industries, entrepreneurs will see a significant reduction in their compliance costs, which in turn will give them new strength. In the field of exports too, changes in logistics and systems will give them a major advantage," he added. PM Modi had said the past decade has been one of Reform, Perform, and Transform. "But now, we must add new strength to our efforts. In recent times, we have undertaken many reforms--whether in the field of FDI, in the insurance sector, in allowing global universities to establish campuses in Bharat. We have abolished more than 40,000 unnecessary compliances. Not only that, we have also scrapped over 1,500 obsolete laws. We have gone to Parliament to amend dozens of laws to simplify them, always placing the interests of the public first. This time too, amidst the ruckus, the news may not have reached people about a very significant reform that has taken place in the Income Tax Act," he said. "We have decided to abolish more than 280 sections. And friends, our reforms are not limited to the economic front alone--we have also implemented reforms to make life easier for citizens. The promptness of income tax refunds is a result of reforms. Cashless assessments are a result of reforms. Exempting income up to ₹12 lakh from income tax--this has brought great joy to my middle-class families, who are eager to contribute to nation-building. Never before did anyone imagine that income up to ₹12 lakh could be entirely tax-free, but we have made it a reality today," he added. PM Modi also talked of GST reforms and said this Diwali will be "double Diwali" for people. "This Diwali, I am going to make it a double Diwali for you. This Diwali, you fellow countrymen are going to get a very big gift. In the last 8 years, we have done a big reform of GST, reduced the tax burden across the country, simplified the tax regime and after 8 years, the need of the hour is that we should review it once. We started the review by setting up a high-power committee and also held discussions with the states," he said. "We are coming with the next generation of GST reforms, this will be a gift for you this Diwali, taxes needed by the common man will be reduced substantially, a lot of facilities will be increased. Our MSMEs, our small entrepreneurs, will get a huge benefit. Everyday items will become very cheap and that will also give a new boost to the economy," he added. PM Modi pushed for self-reliance in various sectors. He said that India's farmers, cattle rearers, and fishermen are our biggest priorities. "Modi is standing like a wall against any harmful policy related to the farmers of India, the fishermen of India and the cattle rearers of India. India will never accept any compromise regarding its farmers, its livestock farmers, its fishermen," he said. India and the US have been negotiating a Bilateral Trade Agreement and Washington DC is keen on India giving more access to its farming and dairy sectors. The United States has imposed 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods. After imposing 25 per cent tariff, US President Donald Trump announced 25 per cent more tariff on India for the import of Russian oil. PM Modi said reform is a continuous process and reforms must be undertaken as per the demands of the times and prevailing circumstances. The Prime Minister said India has opened the doors to nuclear energy to the private sector. "In the field of nuclear energy, we have introduced major reforms. We have now opened the doors of nuclear energy to the private sector as well, we want to combine our strengths," he said.

RSS chief bats for greater role for women in decision-making processes, transformation of society

New Delhi, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Monday underscored the significance of participation of women in work and decision-making processes, saying half of the population cannot be left out if society has to be transformed. RSS chief bats for greater role for women in decision-making processes, transformation of society Addressing a book launch event here, Bhagwat asserted that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh itself follows the idea and takes decisions on various issues in coordination and consultation with the Rashtra Sevika Samiti, which was set up in 1936 for women to function as an organisation parallel to the RSS for men. "Samaj ko sudharna hai toh, 50 per cent ko alag nahin rakh sakte ," the RSS chief said. He said the Rashtra Sevika Samiti has 43 pracharika and its work is expanding very well. "We interact with each other," he said. Besides, Bhagwat said, women representatives from Samiti and various other organisations are invited to participate in the annual meeting of Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha, the RSS' core body which takes decisions. "They participate in all the deliberations held at the meeting… We take decisions together," he said, adding that when it comes to any issues related to women, the decision is left on women representatives and the meeting accepts the decisions they take. "Women and men work together in what we do in the interest of society," he added. Bhagwat was responding to a common question that keeps coming from the media and other sections on why the RSS does not allow women to join the organisation and work for it. He said that women have already started working in the "implementation groups" of various departments of the RSS. "This will gradually increase," he hoped. The RSS chief said that when the Rashtra Sevika Samiti was founded, it was decided that there will not be any "encroachment upon each other's fields" and that both will always help each other. "And this is happening," he said. The RSS chief said dedicated swayamsevaks of the RSS and their family members who also contribute to the cause are part of the Sangh Parivar. "When various organisations are combined together and called Sangh Parivar, it's a misnomer," he added. Bhagwat was speaking at an event after launching a book, 'Tan Samarpit, Man Samarpit", a biographical note dedicated to the life and contributions of late Ramesh Prakash, former prant parachark of the RSS Delhi unit. Bhagwat said that Sangh grew up and expanded its footprints due to the selfless and tireless service of the swayamsevaks despite all kinds of adverse circumstances. He said that after 1942, the British government carried out a detailed survey of the Sangh and its activities through their intelligence agency which noted in its report that the organisation is not creating any trouble and looks clean as of now. But in future, if anything starts against the British rule, then they will prove to be a big problem, he added.
