Shakur Stevenson (23-0 with 11 knockouts) was a silver-medal winner at the 2016 Olympics before turning pro. Stevenson won his first major title in 2019 when he captured the vacant WBO featherweight belt with a unanimous decision over Joet Gonzalez.
Stevenson didn't stick around long at that weight, moving up to super featherweight without defending the WBO featherweight belt. After two victories at super featherweight, Stevenson won the vacant WBO interim super featherweight title with a decision victory over Jeremiah Nakathila.
In September 2021, Stevenson captured the WBO title with a 10th-round TKO win over Jamel Herring. He defended that title and added the WBC super featherweight title to his collection in April 2022 with a unanimous decision win over Oscar Valdez.
Then, in September 2023, Stevenson missed weight for his title fight against Robson Conceicao. Stevenson won the fight via decision, but he left the Prudential Center in Newark that night without a single title. After the win, Stevenson announced his move to the lightweight division.
He started his lightweight run with a TKO win over Shuichiro Yoshino and then captured the vacant WBC belt in his next outing, beating Edwin De Los Santos via decision.
In his first defense of the belt, the 27-year-old Stevenson defeated Artem Harutyunyan via decision in July 2024. Stevenson returned to action in February 2025 with a ninth-round TKO win over Josh Padley.
Although Stevenson got the stoppage in that fight, many were unhappy with the lack of action in the contest, especially since Padley accepted the fight during the week of the event, replacing Floyd Schofield.
ESPN has Stevenson ranked as the No. 2 lightweight behind Gervonta 'Tank' Davis.

William Zepeda (33-0 with 27 knockouts) is the No. 4 135-pound boxer, according to ESPN. The 29-year-old is the interim WBC champion, having won that title in November 2024 with a split decision over Tevin Farmer. He defended the interim crown in March 2025, beating Farmer by majority decision in a rematch.
One of the most active punchers in the lightweight division, Zepeda landed 344 of 974 attempted punches in the second fight against Farmer.
Before winning the interim WBC championship, Zepeda won and defended (three times) the WBA Continental Americas lightweight title.
Stevenson marks the sixth consecutive fight for Zepeda against a southpaw foe.
We will have more on the Berlanga vs. Sheeraz and The Ring 3 fight card as fight night nears.

Yankees cut 2-time batting champ DJ LeMahieu with nearly $22 million left on contract

Eric Samulski evaluates why Andrew Vaughn should be added in deeper fantasy leagues after the Milwaukee Brewers placed slugger Rhys Hoskins on the 10-day IL with a sprained thumb. NEW YORK — DJ LeMahieu was cut Wednesday by the New York Yankees with almost $22 million remaining on his contract, one day after the two-time batting champion got demoted to the bench. 'It's been a tough couple days. Some hard conversations,' manager Aaron Boone said before New York's 9-6 victory over the Seattle Mariners. 'But in the end, feel like this is the right thing to do at this time.' LeMahieu, who turns 37 on Sunday, was designated for assignment and fellow infielder Jorbit Vivas was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. New York has seven days to trade or release LeMahieu, or send him outright to the minors - an assignment he would have the right to refuse in favor of free agency. It's very unlikely another team would claim LeMahieu off waivers because he's still owed $21,612,903 from the $90 million, six-year deal he signed with the Yankees prior to the 2021 season. New York must pay him $6,612,903 for the rest of this season and $15 million in 2026. 'Tough decisions,' general manager Brian Cashman said. 'It ultimately comes down to how this roster sits and what's best. You want to provide your manager with enough chess moves.' LeMahieu, a three-time All-Star, was batting .266 with two homers, 12 RBIs and a .674 OPS. He made his season debut May 13 after recovering from a left calf strain and had a .310 average in his last 31 games since June 1. A versatile defender in the past, LeMahieu has made all 35 of his starts at second base this year - even though he's got plenty of experience at third and the Yankees essentially have a hole there. Going back to the winter, LeMahieu expressed a preference to play second or first because third base 'had become an issue physically' at this stage of his career, Cashman said. So that's why LeMahieu played second exclusively throughout his minor league rehab assignment and was inserted there when he came off the injured list. All-Star infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. began the season at second base, his most natural position, after playing third for the Yankees last year. But he got hurt in late April and when he returned in early June from a right oblique strain, he moved back to the hot corner for a while as LeMahieu stayed at second. 'We gave him runway to see what he looked like, to see if this dimension with the current setup was going to be workable,' Cashman said. 'At some point, you make some tough decisions.' LeMahieu won three Gold Gloves at second with Colorado from 2014-18 - and another one in a utility role with the Yankees in 2022. But his range has been diminished by toe, foot, hip and calf injuries in recent years. The athletic Chisholm, meanwhile, has made some wild throws from third base lately while hindered by a sore shoulder. So on Tuesday, Boone moved Chisholm back to second and put LeMahieu on the bench. Boone said LeMahieu didn't ask for his release and was willing to start working out at other positions - including third base - to provide options. But a day later, after multiple meetings with Boone and Cashman this week, LeMahieu's 6 1/2-year tenure with the Yankees came to an unceremonious end. 'Looking at what the next few weeks could unveil, kind of Cash and I decided today like, it was probably the day to go ahead and do it,' Boone said. 'I just feel like now and how our roster's built, maybe this gives us some more flexibility in the short term.' Boone said third base going forward will be 'some kind of combination' between Vivas and light-hitting Oswald Peraza, who started at the hot corner for the second consecutive night Wednesday. Boone also said backup catcher J.C. Escarra could even 'figure into that mix.' Regardless, Cashman will be looking for a third baseman as the July 31 trade deadline approaches. New York added depth by signing infielder Nicky Lopez and third baseman Jeimer Candelario to minor league contracts this month. LeMahieu won his first batting title in 2016 with the Rockies and his second with New York in 2020, when he hit .364 with 10 homers and 27 RBIs in 50 games during the pandemic-shortened season. 'As widely respected a player as we've had - and understandably so,' Boone said. 'He's earned that with just his professionalism, his toughness, his play on the field and just kind of the quiet way he goes about things. There's a lot of guys that have an immense amount of respect for DJ. 'Sometimes you have to make hard decisions.' In another move, the Yankees opened a roster spot for right-hander Cam Schlittler by designating reliever Geoff Hartlieb for assignment. Schlittler was selected from Triple-A to start Wednesday night against Seattle in his major league debut.

Red Sox sweep Rockies as Masataka Yoshida collects 3 hits in season debut

BOSTON — It was a point in the schedule the Boston Red Sox had to dominate to stay afloat in the American League wild-card race as the trade deadline nears. They took care of business. The Red Sox poured on five runs in the eighth inning as rain fell at Fenway Park for a 10-2 win over the Colorado Rockies and their second straight series sweep. They swept the Washington Nationals over the weekend. The Rockies and Nationals have struggled mightily this season, but the Red Sox can't afford to lose winnable games, making it six straight wins and eight of their last nine. Advertisement 'Early in the season, we didn't do a good job against certain teams, and we actually talked about it before Washington,' manager Alex Cora said. 'We've been playing well (of late). Now, obviously we've got Tampa Bay (coming up).' In his season debut, Masataka Yoshida posted a 3-for-4 night as designated hitter with an RBI single in the fourth, making it a 2-0. He added a double in the eighth. Yoshida had missed the first 93 games of the season following offseason shoulder surgery, but his bat brings more depth to the Red Sox lineup. Macho Man working! 💪 — Red Sox (@RedSox) July 10, 2025 'Happy to have Masa back,' Cora said. 'That's a big at-bat for us. You saw the difference today, how long the lineup was, and that's without Ceddanne (Rafaela) in the lineup. We have to figure out who is gonna play and all that stuff, but I think it's the deepest lineup we have in a while here.' Yoshida has had a long road to recovery since surgery. Though he'd been hitting since the spring, his throwing shoulder hadn't gained enough strength to play the outfield, and until the Red Sox traded designated hitter Rafael Devers nearly a month ago, Yoshida had no avenue to join the team. With Devers gone, Yoshida returned and will DH against right-handers with Rob Refsnyder facing left-handers. Cora will mix and match the rest of the outfield now that Roman Anthony, who'd spent time at DH following the Devers trade, will be playing more in the outfield. 'I think we can actually make this work and keep them fresh,' Cora said of his rotating roster, joking he'd pick a name from a hat each night on who to sit. 'They could keep doing that (offensively) and make it harder on me.' Yoshida may also see time in the outfield on an 'as needed' basis, Cora said. He's taken grounders at first base, too, including before Wednesday's game. But Cora also noted Yoshida would only play first in an emergency. Advertisement Nevertheless, Yoshida's bat-to-ball approach strengthens the lineup at a time when the group has been rolling, scoring 10 or more runs in six of its last 11 games. And the Red Sox will be getting another bat back soon, too. Before the game, Cora said Alex Bregman would be activated this weekend for the Rays series, likely on Friday or Saturday. Since Bregman is skipping a rehab assignment following his quad injury on May 23, it's expected he won't play every day once he returns as he builds up volume in the field. Still, having yet another veteran bat, one who hit .299 with a .938 OPS in 51 games before the injury, will only add more to the offense. 'If you look at who we have and who's on the bench and what we can do, it's very versatile,' Cora said of his club. 'And we're about to get deeper in a few days.' Wednesday's win was all about the offense with homers from Carlos Narvaez, Wilyer Abreu, Romy Gonzalez and Jarren Duran, but starter Lucas Giolito continued to roll as well. The right-hander threw six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out six. He didn't issue a walk. Jarren makes it a 10-run game!!! 😤 — Red Sox (@RedSox) July 10, 2025 He became the first Red Sox pitcher since David Price in 2018 to have six straight outings of six innings or more with two or fewer earned runs allowed. In his last six starts dating to June 10, Giolito has a 0.70 ERA after he began the year with a 6.42 ERA through seven starts. 'The first month back didn't go the way we wanted, obviously,' Giolito said, noting a turning point in New York where he and pitching coach Andrew Bailey made a few tweaks. 'But we made the adjustments, got my mechanics locked in, got the feeling locked in, and I'm happy with how I have thrown the ball recently.' With four games before the All-Star break and a key series beginning Thursday against Tampa Bay, a team that sits directly ahead of them in the American League East, the Red Sox have a test heading into the break. 'There's a lot of energy right now,' Cora said. 'Obviously that comes with winning and swinging the bat well, but we've just got to be ready for (Thursday). We got a big series against the Rays and just go out there and play hard.'
