Canal+ flags smaller line-up of films in 2025 but hails Paddington hit

The company, which launched its shares on the London Stock Exchange last year, reported group revenues of 3.1 billion euros (£2.7 billion) for the first half of 2025.
This was down 3.3% on the same period a year ago, driven by contracts coming to an end, including with Disney in France and the Uefa Champions League, it said.
For the group's film and TV production business, which includes StudioCanal, revenues dipped by about 3% year on year.
This was mainly because of a smaller line-up of films sold internationally over the first half of 2025, compared with 2024, which included the releases of Back To Black and Wicked Little Letters.
But the impact of fewer releases was partly offset by the success of major films including Paddington In Peru, Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, and We Live In Time.
Canal+ said there had been 'record viewership' in cinema, series and live sports events across its regions over the period.
The company floated on the London Stock Exchange in December in one of the biggest new listings for the City in several years.
The decision for Paris-based Canal+ to list in London was hailed by Chancellor Rachel Reeves as a 'vote of confidence' in the UK's stock market.
The company had 25.7 million subscribers at the end of June – about 1.2% fewer than it had the same time last year.
It has been eyeing cost reductions across Europe which it hopes will boost profits.
Maxime Saada, chief executive of Canal+, said: 'I am pleased with all we have accomplished at Canal+ since our listing.
'Our strategy of bringing our in-house content together with content from the world's best studios, sports competitions and streaming platforms, and super-aggregating it all on our enhanced Canal+ app for the benefit of our customers, provides us with a unique value proposition.'

Business chiefs are demanding Rachel Reeves offers tax incentives to help a million young people into workplace

BUSINESS chiefs are demanding Rachel Reeves offers tax incentives to help a million young people into the workplace. More than 100 industry bosses, including Toyota and JCB, have written to the Chancellor demanding help to avoid youths ending up on the scrapheap. 2 Demands are being laid out for a Skills Tax Relief at the Budget with claims it could save £10 billion over five years in welfare savings. The calls come as the talent of one million NEETs – Not in Education, Employment or Training – is going to waste. Georgina Bristol, of the Jobs Foundation, said: 'We know that businesses are the best engine for providing that vital first step on the career ladder for young people. 'But businesses are facing too many additional costs, which is stopping them from fulfilling this vital role. 'We are not short of young people with ambition. We are short of clear routes into real work. A Skills Tax Relief could give business the tools to offer that hope.' Young people who were in this category before the pandemic stood at 10.7 per cent but this then hit a peak of 13.2 per cent – representing 987,000 not earning or even learning a skill. The joint letter from 125 business leaders wants Ms Reeves to bring in some form of tax incentive to enable funding in young people. Prominent signatories include chairman of JCB Lord Anthony Bamford, Labour Peer Lord Jon Mendelsohn and sports promoter Barry Hearn. The Jobs Foundation also highlights that that the number of apprenticeships has fallen by 40 per cent since 2016. The Chancellor last month told a House of Lords committee that getting young people back into work is where 'the biggest crisis exists'. Raising taxes will kill off growth, Reeves warned as she pledges to rip up business red tape 2

Bosses urge Chancellor to save a million kids from the scrapheap

More than 125 bosses, peers and academics have written to Rachel Reeves in a stark warning over the 'scandal' of nearly a million young people at risk of being a wasted generation. Official figures show there is an army of NEETs – people aged 16-24 who are not in employment, education or training. The letter, to be delivered to the Chancellor today, says that without urgent action, huge numbers are destined 'for the scrapheap.' It has been co-ordinated by Christopher Nieper, boss of the David Nieper fashion business, along with the Jobs Foundation charity. Signatories include JCB chief Lord Bamford, City tycoon Lord Spencer, property mogul Jamie Ritblat, grocery entrepreneur Sean Ramsden and venture capitalist Jon Moulton. Toyota UK and the Rigby Group, Europe's largest private IT services company, are also among the signatories urging a skills tax relief to incentivise firms to train young people, which they say would benefit the Exchequer and boost less prosperous areas. Nieper, who has rescued a failing school in Derbyshire which claims that it helped all 18-year-old pupils secure a job or further education, said: 'The cost of the NEETs crisis to the economy is unsustainable – not just in welfare payments but in lost productivity, unfulfilled potential and long-term damage caused by early unemployment.' He has proposed a tax break for employers and says modelling shows that if the number of NEETs is halved, the Exchequer would gain up to £23billion.
