Daily Mirror19-07-2025
Robbie Pardlo, lead singer of the early 2000s RandB trio City High, has sadly died at age 46, his family has confirmed. Pardlo's cause of death has not been released
The lead vocalist of early noughties R&B trio City High, has tragically passed away at the age of 46.

Robbie Pardlo died on Thursday, July 17, surrounded by his loved ones at his residence in Willingboro, New Jersey, as reported by TMZ. The cause of death has yet to be disclosed.

Pardlo shot to fame alongside Claudette Ortiz and Ryan Toby as part of City High, renowned for their 2001 chart-topping single What Would You Do? Produced by Wyclef Jean, the track became a rallying cry for struggling single parents and soared into the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100.

City High's meteoric rise to success earned them a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group at the 44th Annual Grammy Awards. The band called it quits in 2003, but their music continued to resonate.

Plans for a memorial and tribute to Pardlo are currently being arranged by his family, with further details expected to be released shortly.
From 1999 to 2003, Pardlo was a key member of City High, performing alongside Claudette Ortiz and Ryan Toby. Their breakout hit, What Would You Do?, released in 2001 and produced by Wyclef Jean, became a nationwide anthem highlighting poverty and the struggles faced by single parents.
City High initially formed when Pardlo signed as a solo artist, but later brought on board his schoolmate Toby. In an effort to distinguish themselves from other male duos, they included Ortiz, another classmate, forming the trio that fans grew to love, reports the Mirror US.

In May 2001, City High released their only full-length album, City High, which reached No. 34 on the Billboard 200 and received high praise from music critics. The group also notched up another chart success with Caramel, a team-up with rapper Eve, which climbed into the Billboard Hot 100's top 20.
Despite the band's meteoric ascent, City High split in 2003, leaving behind a short-lived but enduring impact on the early 2000s R&B landscape. Pardlo's vocals and the trio's narrative style struck a chord with fans well beyond their dissolution.
Supporters flocked to X, previously Twitter, to honour the deceased rapper. One admirer posted, "It's with a heavy heart that I share the passing of Robbie Pardlo, singer and former member of the R&B trio City High. "Try to work in a industry that has really safe odds of longevity in life kids. RIP," another commented.
A third contributed, "City High and LFO was my first concert. I got to run into City High after the show and talk to them for a few. Gonna hit play on Caramel in honor. "Aww man RIP Robbie Pardlo of Hip Hop group City High. This group was a breath of fresh air hearing growing up and their content was high quality," someone else posted.

Lily Allen reveals abusive ex's brutal put-down to 'assert control' over her

Lily Allen has spoken about how an ex-partner 'bullied and abused her'. Rising to fame in 2005, Lily's debut single Smile reached number 1 on the UK Singles Chart, while her debut album Alright, Still peaked at number 2. Throughout her career to date, she's won a Brit Award and been nominated for a Grammy and Laurence Olivier Award. Over the years the 40-year-old has also seen her private life generate plenty of attention, with the star now detailing how a past relationship affected her self-esteem. On the latest episode of her podcast Miss Me?, which she hosts with friend Miquita Oliver, Lily detailed the lengths her ex – who she didn't name – would go to in a bid to assert control over her. Calling the ex 'abusive and bullying', she went on to explain: 'It was somebody I was in a relationship with would do it to me [accusing her of having poor hygiene] and I don't think that it was real'. 'I think that it was like a form of bullying and abuse, it was a horrible one. And as bullying forms of abuse go, it's a really horrible one.' She continued: 'Yeah, it was like done on purpose to make me feel self-conscious and sh** about myself. And make them feel powerful. I don't think I've brushed my hair in any relationship. I just don't brush my hair full stop.' In recent months Lily has also been open about her recent marriage break-down to ex-husband David Harbour. Earlier this year it emerged she'd split from the Stranger Things star, 50, whom she met in 2019 and married the following year. Since their split it's been reported that he'd been on dating apps while they were still together and also engaged in a three-year long affair. Late last year Lily described 'not being in a great place mentally' and later that she was 'feeling like a burden when low and lonely'. Lily was previously in a relationship with the Chemical Brothers musician Ed Simons for five months in 2007. She then went to meet builder and decorator Sam Cooper two years later. They went on to marry in 2011 and gave birth to their daughter Ethel the same year. The couple then had a second daughter – Marnie – in 2013. However, they split in 2015 after Lily admitted to cheating on her husband with female escorts, which she detailed in her memoir My Thoughts Exactly. She has also previously dated art dealer Jay Jopling and grime MC Meridian Dan and was recently linked to Happy Valley actor James Norton. On her podcast last year Lily admitted she 'had children for all the wrong reasons'. 'I was yearning for unconditional love, which I haven't felt in my life since I was a child,' she said. 'Also, my career was at such a high speed, you know high pressure and I'm a people pleaser and I felt like very overwhelmed by what was happening. 'I just didn't get much respite and I felt like the one way to stop people hassling me, it's not about me it's about this other person that's inside me.' More Trending Earlier this month she also spoke about having several abortions, saying she would 'get pregnant all the time'. 'Abortions, I've had a few, but then again I can't remember exactly how many,' she said, before estimating she'd had 'about four or five'. Her comments come a few years after she took to the stage at Glastonbury with Olivia Rodrigo to sing her 00s classic F**k You in protest of the Supreme Court overturning Roe vs Wade that week. If you are experiencing domestic abuse, you are not alone. And whether you are currently coping with or have made the decision to leave, you do have options. If you are thinking about leaving, domestic abuse charity Refuge suggests starting a record of abusive incidents, which might include saving pictures or messages, or making notes of times, dates and details of incidents. The next step is to make copies of important documents such as court orders, marriage certificates, National Insurance Numbers and your driving licence. In the meantime, identify the safer areas of your home so that you know where to go if your abuser becomes aggravated. Ideally, this should be a room with a phone and a door or window to the outside. If you feel ready to leave, start by making a plan for a safe, reliable route out. If you feel safe to do so, pack an emergency bag so that you leave in a hurry if needed. You can access a local refuge, either with or without children, for as long as you need to stay. The address is confidential. The National Domestic Abuse Helpline (0808 2000 247) is open 24-hours a day and has all the details of refuges in your area. In an emergency situation, ring 999 and ask for the police. If you aren't able to talk, try the Silent Solution: after dialling 999, listen to the questions from the operator and respond by coughing or tapping your device, if possible. If prompted, press 55 to let the operator know it's an emergency – you'll be put through to the police. Read more here. Got a story? Chief of War on Apple TV+: Everything you need to know about Jason Momoa's 10-year passion project

Jason Momoa has been working on Chief of War for a decade and the historical epic drama will finally be released later this week Jason Momoa is set to captivate audiences in the upcoming historical epic, Chief of War, where he not only stars but also takes on the roles of executive producer and co-writer. ‌ Touted as the next big hit following Game of Thrones, the Hawaiian-American icon, known for his roles in Aquaman and A Minecraft Movie, has been developing this project alongside showrunner Thomas Paʻa Sibbett for an impressive ten years. ‌ The inaugural nine-part season of Chief of War is set to make a grand entrance with a two-part premiere on Apple TV+ later this week, promising to unveil Hawaii's rich and tumultuous history like fans have never been seen before. ‌ Adding to the show's authenticity, the cast will deliver most of their lines in the native Ōlelo Hawai'i language, which Momoa admits was even more challenging to master than Dothraki. As we gear up for one of the most anticipated new historical dramas, let's delve into what we know about Chief of War, reports the Mirror US. ‌ What is Chief of War about? For the first time in a major television production, Chief of War shines a light on Hawaii during the pivotal 18th-19th Century era. Stepping into the shoes of Ka'iana, a renowned warrior of Hawaiian nobility, Game of Thrones star Momoa portrays the character's struggles with political power and encroaching Western settlers during a critical time for the Pacific Islands. His character, Ka'iana, becomes an iconic figure in Hawaiian lore after his travels abroad and subsequent return to engage in a fierce battle that will decide the destiny of his homeland. ‌ The series sets the stage with a synopsis stating: "The story begins at the turn of the 19th century when the four major kingdoms of the Hawaiian Islands were in a state of war. "The series follows Kaʻiana, a warrior chief (aliʻi) of Kauaʻi who travels outside of the islands as the 'most famous Hawaiian in the world ', returns home and joins a bloody campaign until, at the last minute, he rebels against the unification of Hawaiʻi that took place from 1782 to 1810 under Kamehameha I." ‌ Who is in the cast of Chief of War? Jason Momoa takes centre stage as the infamous warrior Ka'iana, hot on the heels of his blockbuster appearances in Minecraft, Aquaman and Fast X. He's accompanied by a predominantly Polynesian ensemble, featuring both seasoned performers and emerging talent. The lineup boasts Star Wars legend and Momoa's Aquaman colleague Temuera Morrison as Chief Kahekili, The Night Agent's Luciane Buchanan as Kaʻahumanu and Avatar and The Meg's Cliff Curtis. ‌ Completing the supporting ensemble are fresh faces including Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Kaina Makua, Te Kohe Tuhaka and Moses Goods. Additional cast members comprise Siua Ikaleʻo, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, Siaosi Fonua, Benjamin Hoetjes, and Erroll Shand. ‌ When will Chief of War be released? Anticipating fans won't have to wait much longer as Chief of War debuts this Friday, 1st August. The opening two episodes will drop at midnight. ‌ It will subsequently maintain a weekly release pattern of fresh episodes, continuing through until Friday, 19th September. While the drama was initially commissioned as an eight-episode miniseries, the inclusion of a ninth episode in the first series might suggest that Momoa and Sibbett have intentions for the drama to carry on. However, there's no confirmation about a second series at this point.

Netflix's Trainwreck series is set to investigate the Storm Area 51 event that had the world talking. Netflix fans have said they "can't wait" for the latest Trainwreck instalment which promises to unravel the enigma behind Storm Area 51. ‌ The anthology series, Trainwreck, has been captivating viewers by revisiting some of the most bewildering and sensational events that have gripped the public's attention. The series offers a deep dive into a variety of incidents ranging from holiday disasters and political imbroglios to reality show fiascos and festival tragedies, each explored through a distinctive lens. ‌ Streaming on Netflix, the series has garnered a massive following for its inclusion of never-before-seen footage and interviews with those directly involved. And fans are eagerly awaiting the release of the final episode this week. ‌ Tomorrow's episode (July 29) is set to explore a peculiar true story that had people talking worldwide. The upcoming episode of Trainwreck will delve into the Storm Area 51 craze, which was ignited by a single social media post, reports the Mirror US. According to a Netflix description: "A viral joke about storming a secretive US Air Force base sparks a meme-fueled media frenzy and puts the military on alert in this bizarre true story." ‌ What is Storm Area 51? Nestled in Nevada lies a highly classified US Air Force facility, widely referred to as Area 51. Over time, it has become the centre of numerous speculations, including those surrounding UFOs and extra-terrestrial lore – yet, it was one particular joke that seemingly went too far. Back in 2019, Matty Roberts, then 20, sparked a global sensation by creating a Facebook event titled "Storm Area 51, They can't Stop All of Us", with the aim to raid the top-secret Air Force base in Nevada and expose its hidden mysteries. The event, which promised to reveal everything from clandestine government experiments to extraterrestrial tech, captured imaginations worldwide, becoming an internet phenomenon. ‌ Despite hundreds of thousands pledging to join the raid, US military and federal agencies like the FBI and Federal Aviation Administration were quick to issue stern warnings. Netflix's Tudum tantalisingly hints: "This is the story of the greatest sh*tpost ever made." Even with official cautions, the event's popularity skyrocketed, with millions marking themselves as interested for the planned date of September 20. Yet, when the day arrived, only some of the enthusiasts actually showed up, and they were promptly dispersed by authorities. Now, the infamous escapade is set to feature on Netflix's Trainwreck documentary series, much to the delight of eager viewers. One fan expressed their excitement: "Trainwreck Storm Area 51... I'm 1000% watching this Tuesday. I remember when this happened." Another shared their anticipation: "The Trainwreck series is pretty cool. Look forward to the Area 51 episode."
