Inside viral Storm Area 51 frenzy as Netflix's Trainwreck reveals what really happened
Netflix fans have said they "can't wait" for the latest Trainwreck instalment which promises to unravel the enigma behind Storm Area 51.
The anthology series, Trainwreck, has been captivating viewers by revisiting some of the most bewildering and sensational events that have gripped the public's attention. The series offers a deep dive into a variety of incidents ranging from holiday disasters and political imbroglios to reality show fiascos and festival tragedies, each explored through a distinctive lens.
Streaming on Netflix, the series has garnered a massive following for its inclusion of never-before-seen footage and interviews with those directly involved. And fans are eagerly awaiting the release of the final episode this week.
Tomorrow's episode (July 29) is set to explore a peculiar true story that had people talking worldwide. The upcoming episode of Trainwreck will delve into the Storm Area 51 craze, which was ignited by a single social media post, reports the Mirror US.
According to a Netflix description: "A viral joke about storming a secretive US Air Force base sparks a meme-fueled media frenzy and puts the military on alert in this bizarre true story."
What is Storm Area 51?
Nestled in Nevada lies a highly classified US Air Force facility, widely referred to as Area 51. Over time, it has become the centre of numerous speculations, including those surrounding UFOs and extra-terrestrial lore – yet, it was one particular joke that seemingly went too far.
Back in 2019, Matty Roberts, then 20, sparked a global sensation by creating a Facebook event titled "Storm Area 51, They can't Stop All of Us", with the aim to raid the top-secret Air Force base in Nevada and expose its hidden mysteries. The event, which promised to reveal everything from clandestine government experiments to extraterrestrial tech, captured imaginations worldwide, becoming an internet phenomenon.
Despite hundreds of thousands pledging to join the raid, US military and federal agencies like the FBI and Federal Aviation Administration were quick to issue stern warnings.
Netflix's Tudum tantalisingly hints: "This is the story of the greatest sh*tpost ever made."
Even with official cautions, the event's popularity skyrocketed, with millions marking themselves as interested for the planned date of September 20. Yet, when the day arrived, only some of the enthusiasts actually showed up, and they were promptly dispersed by authorities.
Now, the infamous escapade is set to feature on Netflix's Trainwreck documentary series, much to the delight of eager viewers. One fan expressed their excitement: "Trainwreck Storm Area 51... I'm 1000% watching this Tuesday. I remember when this happened."
Another shared their anticipation: "The Trainwreck series is pretty cool. Look forward to the Area 51 episode."

Mind-bending' TV drama that had fans calling in sick races up Netflix chart
A mind-bending Netflix series that had fans lying to their bosses so they could binge the 'gut-wrenching' finale has raced up the Netflix chart. Part two of the second season of The Sandman, adapted from Neil Gaiman's beloved comic book series, dropped on Netflix on July 24. Since landing on the service, the second season has flown to #3 on the Netflix Top Ten and been viewed more than three million times. The second season focuses on Dream and his epic final journey as he seeks to rebuild his kingdom following his dramatic battle with Doctor John Dee. However, the show has been marred by accusations against Gaiman, which sent shockwaves through his fan base earlier this year. Despite that, the show has remained extremely popular with its fans, even causing them to 'call in sick' so they can watch it. In an announcement that came in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations levied against Gaiman, who co-developed the show from his comics. Ahead of the season, Netflix released a teaser trailer for The Sandman season two, which did not mention Gaiman by name. Allan Heinberg, the Sandman showrunner, also avoided mentioning Gaiman or the allegations against him when he shared a statement about the show's conclusion. 'The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream's story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,' he told Netflix's Tudum. More Trending Several of Gaiman's upcoming projects have been cancelled or delayed in the wake of the allegations. Most notably, we're still waiting to find out when season 3 of the Prime Video show Good Omens will air, while Dark Horse Comics has cancelled Gaiman's Anansi Boys series. ‘Surprisingly heartwarming' comedy dominating Netflix charts despite 69% Rotten Tomatoes score
This divisive comedy sequel is currently leading Netflix's top 10 films despite receiving mixed reviews from critics Netflix subscribers can't get enough of a long-awaited comedy sequel released last week that's currently at the top of the streamer's film chart. With an all-star cast and packed with cameos, fans all seem to agree this riotous follow-up was well worth the near 30-year wait. However, it hasn't been a huge hit for critics, scoring just 69 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Movie fans have been slightly more generous, though, awarding the film a 71 percent audience score. We're, of course, talking about Happy Gilmore 2, which reunites Hollywood funnyman Adam Sandler with one of his most beloved roles. In this rambunctious sequel, the stakes are raised when retired golfer Happy decides to return to the sport that made him a household name to pay for his daughter's ballet school. He bites off more than he can chew when entrepreneur Frank Manatee (played by Benny Safdie) challenges him to compete in his extreme Maxi Golf tournament, forcing Happy to up his game. Fish Jelly Films said of the sequel: 'The cameos come fast and loose, but Happy Gilmore 2 lands as a riotously silly and surprisingly heartwarming comedy.' And IndieWire had to admit: '"More often than not, it makes the shot. 'It is also often quite funny. Most of that humour comes care of Sandler, who slips back into Happy with something like grizzled ease." Chris Mcdonald is a revelation as Shooter McGavin and steals the show.' Someone who attended an early screening on the big screen said: 'Just love when original characters are brought back into a sequel, even if it's 30 yrs later lol. The beginning was wild and unexpected af. 'Loved the experience watching this in the theater! the original will always have my heart but this was silly and had me cracking up.' But other viewers weren't so impressed, with one scathing review saying: 'Downright awful, barely even a movie. 'Virtually every decision was grating - an unfunny and uninspired cameo and clip reel that has zero charm, abhorrent production, stupid plotting, and terrible acting (exceptions: Christopher McDonald, Haley Joel Osment and somehow Scottie Scheffler).' And another simply quipped: 'The only happy thing about this movie is when it ends.' Were you busting a gut over Happy's antics or giving this unashamedly silly comedy follow-up a miss? Happy Gilmore 2 is available to stream on Netflix.

Netflix issues major update on Heartstopper movie as title revealed
Filming has now finished on the story's conclusion Netflix have shared a major update regarding the Heartstopper movie, as its new title has now been confirmed. The hit series debuted on the streaming platform back in 2022 based on Alice Oseman's graphic novels of the same name. It wasn't long before fans were hooked with three seasons being produced in total, with the third landing in October last year. However, devoted viewers have still been waiting to see what's next. They were initially hoping for a fourth season but Netflix went on to confirm that Charlie and Nick's story will conclude with a feature film. It was welcome news for fans who await finding out how the pair navigate moving away to university. Now, it has been confirmed that the movie will be called Heartstopper Forever. Filming has now finished with production having run for around a month across June and July this year. Both Kit Connor and Joe Locke have since posted on their social media about wrapping filming and saying goodbye to their respective characters. Joe shared an image of them both on set with the caption: "Bye Charlie x. Thank you." Netflix has previously released a synopsis for the film which states: "Nick and Charlie are inseparable, but with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. "Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet. Meanwhile, their friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on. Can first loves really last forever?' Locke has previously spoken about the decision to end the series with a movie rather than a final season. He suggests it allows fans to enjoy it sooner, with its release expected some time in 2026. He explained: 'I think the time it would've taken to film a series, we just wouldn't have been able to get everyone in the same place for five years. Then by that time, there would be no need for it." He continued: "So, we realised that the only way to get it made this year is if we do a film because it's less time commitment, and well, we can still put in a lot of the same love and care into the characters, into finishing off the story. "It makes it feel more cinematic, more grand, and gives it the ending it deserves, which I am really excited to start shooting. And the script is great.' Heartstopper overall has a near perfect score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes with seasons one and three managing a perfect 100%. Fans still sing its praises with plenty claiming it is 'one of the best shows ever created'. One sharing their thoughts online added: "Absolutely perfect series. The show is simply beautiful and the cast is charming. Emotions felt so well and the writing is perfect. Don't miss this show at any cost." Heartstopper is streaming now on Netflix.
