‘Surprisingly heartwarming' comedy dominating Netflix charts despite 69% Rotten Tomatoes score

This divisive comedy sequel is currently leading Netflix's top 10 films despite receiving mixed reviews from critics
Netflix subscribers can't get enough of a long-awaited comedy sequel released last week that's currently at the top of the streamer's film chart.

With an all-star cast and packed with cameos, fans all seem to agree this riotous follow-up was well worth the near 30-year wait.

However, it hasn't been a huge hit for critics, scoring just 69 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Movie fans have been slightly more generous, though, awarding the film a 71 percent audience score.
We're, of course, talking about Happy Gilmore 2, which reunites Hollywood funnyman Adam Sandler with one of his most beloved roles.
In this rambunctious sequel, the stakes are raised when retired golfer Happy decides to return to the sport that made him a household name to pay for his daughter's ballet school.

He bites off more than he can chew when entrepreneur Frank Manatee (played by Benny Safdie) challenges him to compete in his extreme Maxi Golf tournament, forcing Happy to up his game.
Fish Jelly Films said of the sequel: 'The cameos come fast and loose, but Happy Gilmore 2 lands as a riotously silly and surprisingly heartwarming comedy.'

And IndieWire had to admit: '"More often than not, it makes the shot.
'It is also often quite funny. Most of that humour comes care of Sandler, who slips back into Happy with something like grizzled ease."

One Letterboxd reviewer was also enthusiastic, posting: 'Laff riot. Complete triumph and loving homage to the original. Chris Mcdonald is a revelation as Shooter McGavin and steals the show.'
Someone who attended an early screening on the big screen said: 'Just love when original characters are brought back into a sequel, even if it's 30 yrs later lol. The beginning was wild and unexpected af.

'Loved the experience watching this in the theater! the original will always have my heart but this was silly and had me cracking up.'
But other viewers weren't so impressed, with one scathing review saying: 'Downright awful, barely even a movie.
'Virtually every decision was grating - an unfunny and uninspired cameo and clip reel that has zero charm, abhorrent production, stupid plotting, and terrible acting (exceptions: Christopher McDonald, Haley Joel Osment and somehow Scottie Scheffler).'
And another simply quipped: 'The only happy thing about this movie is when it ends.'
Were you busting a gut over Happy's antics or giving this unashamedly silly comedy follow-up a miss?
Happy Gilmore 2 is available to stream on Netflix.

Hulk Hogan was 'devastated' by boos during final WWE appearance before death

Wrestling star Hulk Hogan, who died aged 71 this month, was 'devastated' by the negative reaction from the crowd during his final WWE appearance Wrestling legend Hulk Hogan was 'devastated' by the boos he heard from the audience during his final WWE appearance before his death aged 71. The star was found "experiencing a serious medical-related issue" in a house on Eldorado Avenue in Florida and was taken to Morton Plant Hospital in the morning of July 24. ‌ He died at 11.17am in the hospital, and there were "no signs of foul play or suspicious activity", Major Nate Burnside said in a statement. It was recently reported that the wrestler died from acute myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack, per the Pinellas County Forensic Science Centre. ‌ The star, real name Terry Bollea, was said to be poorly in the weeks leading up to his death, but his reps were forced to deny speculations about his health. It comes after Sharon Osbourne broke down in tears at Ozzy's funeral in heartbreaking scenes. ‌ Meanwhile, six months before he died, Hogan took to the stage at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, for a guest appearance in Netflix's WWE series Raw. His longtime pal and manager, Jimmy Hart, recently said Hogan was shocked by the negative reaction he received from the audience and claimed it "bothered him". ‌ Speaking on the Stories With Brisco and Bradshaw podcast, Jimmy explained: "We go out and we had a mixed reaction. You can have 500 people cheering you and one person booing you, but I'll be darned if that one person doesn't outshine [the people cheering]. "It's a mixed reaction, but it's a little bit more boos than anything. That devastated him." The manager suggested the boos were due to the wrestler's support for controversial US President Donald Trump. Hogan previously appeared at the Republican National Convention to back the convicted felon's return to the White House. Jimmy added: "We got in the back and he said: 'What do you think happened?' I said: 'Hulk, it's simple, blue state, red state. Boom'. ‌ "But that bothered him because of that ... Then the next week we're in Texas, and it's all cheers, you know, but that always bothered him. It sure did." During the appearance, he was heard telling the unimpressed crowd: "In the past, I've had a whole bunch of partners down the line. I had incredible partners, like the Macho Man Randy Savage. I've had giant-sized partners like Andre the Giant. ‌ "But the greatest partner the WWE has ever had is the fact that tonight, we're making history, and the WWE has tag teamed up with Netflix, the greatest tag team partner of all time." Hogan's death last week was confirmed by the WWE, who posted a statement on X saying: 'WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away. One of pop culture's most recognisable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s. WWE extends its condolences to Hogan's family, friends, and fans." Hogan headlined the first Wrestlemania in 1985 and faced The Rock, aka Dwayne Johnson, during the event in 2002. His last WWE match was against Randy Orton at SummerSlam in 2006.

Liam Neeson's Naked Gun reboot 'so dense with jokes and gags' audiences scramble to keep up

The Naked Gun film has been rebooted with Liam Neeson in the lead role. Prior to its launch, the Naked Gun remake faced enormous expectations given that the original featuring Leslie Nielsen had achieved cult status worldwide. ‌ However, it appears Liam Neeson, who portrays Frank Drebin Jnr on a quest to crack a murder case and prevent his police department's closure, has smashed it out the park. ‌ Directed and co-written by Akiva Schaffer, also known for being one third of The Lonely Island, the new film has opened to high praise, from film critics on Rotten Tomatoes, successfully delivering "deadpan buffoonery" whilst weaving in a compelling storyline. ‌ One reviewer commented: "Director Akiva Schaffer and his co-writers, Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, get to the heart of the humor in a non-ironic, non-revisionist fashion." A New York Times correspondent wrote: "As the movie continues, though, [Neeson] adds emotional texture to the character and another, somewhat similar yet also different-enough Frank Drebin emerges." ‌ Meanwhile, another Times reviewer noted: "See it with an audience, and experience the rare and wonderful pleasure of a crowd scrambling to keep up with one of the stupidest films it's ever seen." A fourth commentator observed: "So dense with jokes, gags and references to noir tropes and cop shows that it is impossible to clock them all on a single viewing." ‌ Meanwhile a fourth person added: "Reviving a cult classic like The Naked Gun is a bit like bringing slapstick to a funeral - gutsy, awkward, and, when done right, oddly cathartic. Director Schaffer attempts just that, blending puns, parodies, and pop culture into a screwball cocktail... ". And it appears the critics' views are shared by the Quaid army too. One fan declared: "A funny movie that delivered what was advertised!" ‌ A second enthused: "loved this film. Silly and refreshing. Liam and Pam are awesome together." Whilst a third commented: "If you a fan of the originals will enjoy this. Classic Naked Gun humor gotta always be paying attention." Beyond the movie's triumph, another hot topic amongst viewers has been the spark between Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson. Speaking to People magazine, Liam, 73, openly admitted to being "madly in love" with the mother of two. He revealed to the publication: "With Pamela, first off, I'm madly in love with her."
