Blue Jays' Max Scherzer on familiar ground with start vs. Tigers

Blue Jays' Max Scherzer on familiar ground with start vs. Tigers

Reuters6 days ago
July 27 - Max Scherzer returns to the mound where the right-hander became a star in the finale of a four-game series between the Toronto Blue Jays and host Detroit Tigers on Sunday afternoon.
The American League East-leading Blue Jays have won four straight games and eight of nine since the All-Star break, while the AL Central-topping Tigers have dropped six straight and 12 of their last 13.
Scherzer's career took off when he was traded from Arizona to Detroit before the 2010 season. He posted an 82-35 record in five seasons with the Tigers and won the Cy Young Award there in 2013 - the first of three in the eight-time All-Star's well-traveled career.
Right now, the 41-year-old Scherzer is just trying to get back into a groove after recovering from a thumb injury which sidelined him for nearly three months.
Scherzer (1-0, 5.14 ERA) hasn't thrown more than 90 pitches in five starts since coming off the injured list. In his last outing on Tuesday, he gave up four runs in five innings against the New York Yankees. He wound up with a no-decision in a 5-4 loss.
"This is the major leagues; you either win or you don't. That's just how I operate," Scherzer said. "I take accountability for that. Saying that, our team fought hard. We were down, and we fought our way back into that ballgame. Guys are competing all across the diamond offensively and defensively."
The Blue Jays were down 4-1 when he departed but tied the score before the Yankees pushed across the winning run in the ninth.
"I thought Max threw well, and I thought his stuff was really good," Toronto manager John Schneider said. "I wish he had a few more pitches to keep going there, but I think that 90 with the score where it was, that's good for the night."
Scherzer will be making his 80th career start at Detroit's Comerica Park. He's 47-14 with a 3.37 ERA when at the Tigers' home park.
His most recent start in Detroit didn't go so well. As a member of the New York Mets on May 3, 2023, Scherzer gave up six runs and eight hits - including two home runs -- in 3 1/3 innings and took the loss in an 8-1 Tigers victory. Overall, Scherzer is 2-2 with a 3.20 ERA in 25 1/3 innings over four career starts against the Tigers.
Right-hander Jack Flaherty (5-10, 4.77), Detroit's scheduled starter, will be seeking his first win since June 8. He's 0-4 with three no-decisions in his last seven outings.
Flaherty was pulled after just three innings and 78 pitches on Monday. He gave up three runs on six hits and walked three in a 3-0 loss at Pittsburgh.
"I was in some good counts and the at-bats got long," he said. "Then a couple of walks get sprinkled in there, which has been the theme when the pitch count starts to go up quickly. It was a weird one."
What made it even more baffling for Flaherty was that he had six strikeouts along the way.
"I was getting to two strikes and then let them stick around too long. Or I would fall behind and have to make a pitch," he said. "I have to really look at it. It's not a stuff thing. My stuff was actually really good."
Flaherty is 4-1 with a 2.51 ERA in 28 2/3 innings over five career starts against Toronto.
The Blue Jays have won the first three games of the current series by a combined score of 23-7.

Shannon Sharpe makes first public appearance since ESPN firing as he presents brother with Hall of Fame jacket

Shannon Sharpe made his first public appearance since his ESPN firing on Friday night, as he helped induct his brother into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Sharpe was axed by ESPN on Wednesday just weeks after he reached a settlement with his ex-girlfriend, who had accused him of raping her in a $50million lawsuit. Despite the settlement, ESPN relieved Sharpe, 57, of his duties almost two years since prizing him away from rivals Fox Sports. Sharpe later broke his silence and accused the network of ignoring his request to delay the announcement until next week - with the Hall of Fame induction looming. Though they did not honor his request, Sharpe appeared in good spirits as he was seen on stage with his brother Sterling on Friday evening. The axed ESPN analyst was seen putting the prestigious gold jacket on his brother Sterling as the duo became the first set of brothers to be in the Hall of Fame. More to follow...

Bryson Stott drives in game-winner as Phillies rally past Tigers

August 2 - Bryson Stott drove in two runs Friday, including the game-winner in the eighth inning, to help the host Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-4 victory over Detroit, snapping the Tigers' four-game winning streak. Starter Ranger Suarez gave up three runs on four hits over seven innings for Philadelphia. The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning when Gleyber Torres belted his 12th homer of the year 404 feet to left field, scoring Wenceel Perez and Jahmai Jones. Philadelphia loaded the bases in the seventh and pulled within 3-1 when Stott flew out to center field, driving in Nick Castellanos. Otto Kemp then cut it to 3-2 when he scored off of Trea Turner's single to right. The Phillies knotted the game with Kyle Schwarber's single to right field that brought home newly acquired Harrison Bader. On the ensuing at-bat, Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper was ejected when he argued with third base umpire Vic Carapazza, who called him out on a check-swing third strike. The Tigers retook the lead when Perez hit a solo shot to center field in the eighth off of Orion Kerkering (6-4). The Phillies tied it 4-4 in the bottom of the inning with Kemp's double that scored Castellanos from second and went ahead 5-4 when Stott's infield single brought in Kemp. Stott had originally been called out on a throw to first base, but a challenge by Philadelphia was successful. Despite allowing the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, Kerkering picked up the win. Jhoan Duran, who was obtained in a trade with Minnesota on Wednesday, came on in the ninth and registered three quick outs for his 17th save of the season. Detroit starter Jack Flaherty struck out seven and allowed one run and two hits over six innings. Four Tigers relievers were unable to keep the Phillies at bay. Brenan Hanifee (3-3) picked up the loss after allowing Philadelphia's final two runs. --Field Level Media

Olympic star Sha'Carri Richardson arrested on domestic violence charge after incident with sprinter boyfriend

Olympic sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson was arrested at a Seattle airport on Sunday following an incident with boyfriend and fellow Team USA star Christian Coleman, according to reports. The Athletic claims Richardson, who won a 100m silver and 4x100m relay gold medal at last year's Paris Games, was held in custody for just shy of 19 hours after being arrested on a domestic violence assault charge. It is believed the 25-year-old first got into a heated argument with Coleman, her boyfriend of two years, at the TSA security checkpoint in Seattle Tacoma International Airport before an officer witnessed her shoving him multiple times as he tried to walk away. Footage of the alleged incident was reportedly captured on security camera, with cops deeming it enough probable cause to arrest her. The offense was listed as a fourth-degree domestic violence assault, per The Athletic. Coleman allegedly refused to press charges and 'declined to be a victim' before the case was cleared. has reached out to the Port of Seattle Police Department for more information and to USA Track and Field for comment. Richardson and Coleman both raced in Thursday's preliminary rounds at the 2025 USA Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Sha'Carri posted a time of 11.07 seconds in the first round of the women's 100m race, while Christian ran 10.08 in the men's heat, but the former then withdrew from the semifinals the following day. It is unclear whether her withdrawal was related to the arrest.
