Nissan's Plan To Avoid Tariffs? Take Over a Ford Plant

Nissan's Plan To Avoid Tariffs? Take Over a Ford Plant

Miami Herald6 days ago

Though not fully implemented, the specter of tariffs looms large over the auto industry. After decades of building global supply chains and leaning into overseas manufacturing, automakers are growing concerned that tariffs will hit hard and fast. Like many, Nissan is looking to stateside production and procurement to avoid tariffs (should they arrive) and is now partnering with Ford to help in one critical way.
The Wall Street Journal reports that a Ford plant in Kentucky will now be used by Nissan to manufacture batteries for its EVs. Though the report doesn't detail Nissan's production plans, expect that batteries for the Ariya and Leaf, Nissan's only two fully electric vehicles, will come from this Kentucky plant.
In 2021, Ford built two factories in Kentucky as part of a larger $7 billion investment in production and electrification. The two plants were a joint venture with SK On, a battery maker in Korea that produces EV batteries and power storage solutions. The Wall Street Journal notes that weaker-than-expected demand for EVs caused one of the Kentucky facilities to sit dormant. That low demand eventually met with high production costs and looming tariffs, creating a slowdown in Ford's battery manufacturing. Nissan's choice to utilize this defunct factory helps it avoid tariffs on imported EV batteries, which promise to be a substantial additional cost to EV buyers that they are unlikely to tolerate.
In Q1, Nissan reported a $4.5 billion loss and canceled a planned battery factory in Japan. SK On and Nissan already have a deal in place, too; in March, Nissan said SK On would provide batteries for electrified SUVs in production at its Canton, Mississippi, plant. It seems reasonable that this defunct Ford plant in Kentucky-that was built in partnership with SK On-will serve as the production point for SK On and Nissan's efforts.
Details of the deal between SK On and Ford are unknown, but this development is significant for Ford. It either recoups losses by leasing the factory to Nissan or avoids any potential breach of contract with SK On as the factory sits dormant. If SK On owns and operates the factory, but Ford can't satisfy a production agreement, Nissan stepping in may ease Ford's accountability.
Nissan continuously struggles to gain footing in the U.S. market despite making respectable SUVs and a great EV SUV. If this deal with SK On keeps Ariyas (and Leafs, maybe?) on its lots, EV buyers may give its vehicles a closer look. Many other automakers, like BMW, are in a holding pattern with electrified vehicles, so the time might be right for Nissan to gain market share.
It's a tenuous time for Nissan. A spiked deal with Honda had many wondering if the brand would survive, and as EV demand wanes and tariffs loom on the horizon, Nissan must thread the needle on electrification to gain market share. Partnering with SK On to produce EV batteries domestically is smart, but whether it results in more sales remains to be seen.

‘Keep on Buying,' Says Morgan Stanley About Tesla Stock

Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) stock is back in focus as Elon Musk shifts gears, stepping away from political headlines and returning his attention to the company that made him a household name. Confident Investing Starts Here: The move was no doubt greeted enthusiastically by Tesla investors, who have grown frustrated with Musk's high-profile distractions since becoming Trump's 'first buddy.' But beyond the optics, Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas, a longtime Tesla bull, believes there's more at stake, pointing to broader strategic implications tied to Musk's renewed commitment. 'In our view,' Jonas noted, 'Tesla's expertise in manufacturing, data collection, robotics/ physical AI, energy, supply chain and infrastructure are more critical than ever before to put the US on an even footing with China in embodied AI.' Jonas points to China's rapid progress in humanoid robotics – what he calls the 'Humanoid Olympics.' After showcasing robots running a half marathon and competing in combat sports, China is now moving toward full-on humanoid games. 'China's gamification of robotic innovation is accelerating its path to AI supremacy,' says Jonas, who wonders if the US should fight back with a 'Humanoid Ninja Warrior.' The specter of Chinese EV maker BYD looms large too. The company announced significant price reductions across its entire lineup recently – ranging from 10% to nearly 30%. Notably, the price of its budget-friendly Seagull model was slashed to just RMB 55,800 (under $8,000). 'If you want evidence of the 'race to the bottom' in global EV prices, look no further,' says Jonas. The analyst also wonders if Musk might be having a change of heart regarding one possible business venture. For years, he has dismissed the idea of Tesla building eVTOLs or drones, pointing to concerns like noise, privacy issues, public nuisance, and inadequate battery energy density. However, during a recent all-hands meeting, when asked about the possibility of making a plane, Musk paused before replying that the company is currently 'stretched pretty thin.' 'In our opinion,' says Jonas, 'that's a decidedly different type of answer. Is Tesla an aviation/defense-tech company in auto/consumer clothing?' As for the upcoming Cybercab launch, slated for June 12, as with most highly anticipated Tesla events, Jonas thinks it's best to keep a lid on expectations. That said, he'll be watching closely for ongoing updates in the following days and weeks – particularly regarding network performance and growth metrics like vehicle count, mileage, and trip volume. All in all, Jonas remains on TSLA's side, assigning an Overweight (i.e., Buy) rating with a $410 price target, implying potential upside of 18% from current levels. (To watch Jonas's track record, click here) That's a bull's take, but not one the majority of Wall Street analysts share; TSLA stock only claims a Hold consensus rating, based on a mix of 16 Buys, 10 Holds and 11 Sells. Going by the $282.70 average price target, a year from now, shares will be changing hands for an 18% discount. Toyota's Big Electric Leap: 7 New EVs Are Coming to the United States

Toyota's Big Electric Leap: 7 New EVs Are Coming to the United States originally appeared on Autoblog. Toyota's been rather sluggish on the transition to EVs, instead taking a slow approach by shifting most of its lineup from combustion engines to hybrid powertrains. Don't count Toyota out of the game just yet, though - consider the manufacturer a sleeping giant who is finally waking up. After a weak entrance into the electrified segment with the bZ4X, soon to be renamed the bZ, the Japanese automaker is ramping up production with plans to sell seven EVs in the United States by mid-2027. Toyota currently has two all-electric models between its main and premium Lexus brands. The Toyota bZ4X, renamed to bZ for the 2026 model year, receives several major updates that make it more attractive, including a 314-mile range. The 2026 Lexus RZ follows suit, with improved performance and up to 300 miles of range on a single charge. Toyota also announced that the C-HR will arrive sometime in 2026, presumably for the 2027 model year, and offer a 290-mile range. Production of two new EVs will begin at its American manufacturing facilities in 2026, while three others will be imported. According to executives, the Japanese automaker expects slow but steady growth in the EV segment. If there's a surplus for American-made EVs, Toyota will export that surplus to overseas markets with faster EV adoption rates. 'We'll sell a little bit more every year and grow with the market,' Cooper Ericksen, a senior vice president of planning and strategy at Toyota Motor North America, told Bloomberg. 'But we have to think about how many Canada will use, how many the US will use, and we can then export to other global destinations.' Toyota previously pledged to offer an electrified version of every nameplate on its global lineup. To date, approximately 80% of Toyota and Lexus models are available with hybrid or all-electric powertrains. Most recently, Toyota announced that the 2026 RAV4 will come with hybrid-only powertrains. Toyota plans to manufacture at least two new EVs in the United States, but their production efforts don't end there. The Japanese automaker has plans to begin producing and shipping lithium-ion batteries from its US facility later this year. The battery plant spans more than 1,850 acres in Liberty, North Carolina. Once fully operational, the facility will have 14 lines producing batteries. Of those, four will manufacture hybrid batteries, while the other 10 will supply batteries for the two American-made EVs. The first hybrid battery line is expected to start production in June, with the rest beginning operations through 2034. Once all 14 lines are running, the production facility will produce up to 30 gigawatt hours, the equivalent of 800,000 hybrid, 150,000 plug-in hybrid, and 300,000 EV batteries. Toyota sold less than 30,000 EVs in 2024, during which US EV sales rose 7.3% to 1.3 million. That isn't surprising, considering the automaker has been fairly outspoken regarding government policy towards EV adoption. Instead of using incentives to speed up EV sales, such as the $7,500 tax credit, Toyota executives indicated that governmental bodies should allow the EV segment to grow organically. 'The whole EV ecosystem is ahead of the consumer,' said Jack Hollis, COO of Toyota North America, in November 2024 regarding emissions regulations. 'It's not in alignment with consumers. It's just not.' Even so, the Japanese automaker expects EV market share to double over the next five years. According to Cox Automotive, EV sales made up 8.1% of total vehicle sales in 2024. Currently, competitors like Tesla and Hyundai are dominating US EV sales. While all-electric vehicles might not be a major seller for Toyota now, executives aren't willing to cede the segment to competing manufacturers. Tariffs aside, it looks like Toyota has a solid plan to become a true competitor in the EV segment. Considering the original bZ4X crossover was met with mixed reactions thanks to its slow charging speed, lackluster performance, and disappointing range, Toyota's upcoming EVs are a breath of fresh air. The updated bZ and RZ seem promising enough, and the upcoming C-HR looks like a stylish addition to the all-electric lineup. If the pricing is right, Toyota could very well overtake General Motors and Hyundai within a few years. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if the Japanese manufacturer manages to topple Tesla, too.
