MADANI Concept Can Be Expanded To ASEAN Level

Barnama24-04-2025

KUALA LUMPUR, April 24 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia MADANI concept introduced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as a framework to drive the nation towards becoming a developed, prosperous and competitive country can be expanded to the ASEAN level.
Sunway Centre for Planetary Health, Sunway University executive director Prof Tan Sri Dr Jemilah Mahmood said this is because the core values emphasized in the concept such as justice and humanity are aligned with ASEAN's aspirations, with Malaysia serving as chair this year.
"To the Prime Minister, I would say I love the Malaysia MADANI concept because it is in line with planetary health, it's in line with sustainability. We need an ASEAN MADANI.
"I think that begins with looking at the whole issue of climate, peace and security. We need him to come out of his chairmanship, winning the whole issue around conflict, finding a peace resolution," she said during Bernama TV's "ASEAN: Dari Kuala Lumpur ke Dunia" programme, hosted by Gerard Ratnam tonight.
Dr Jemilah said we have to find a peaceful end to the conflicts in the region, particularly in Myanmar.
"It's an appeal to him. As tough as it is, we are all behind him and we want him to succeed. We want him to take on climate change, biodiversity loss and the planetary crisis we are facing very, very seriously.
"We need to look at a rapid energy transition for the region and that these crises are intergenerational. We owe it to the future generations to put into place now the mechanisms that will help make their future lives better than ours," she said.
Dr Jemilah added that Malaysia's image as a respected nation on the global stage can be used as a form of soft power when engaging with any international country on arising issues.
She said that Malaysia's position as the ASEAN Chair also provides an advantage, as countries in the region are currently situated between two global superpowers, Malaysia therefore, has a role to play in ensuring the region's economy and businesses continue to grow.

Iran Says Authorities Will Decide on NPT Withdrawal

ISTANBUL, June 16 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- Iran on Monday said that the authorities will decide whether to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Anadolu Ajansi reported. 'On important issues such as how to deal with the NPT, a decision must be made by the relevant authorities,' Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said in response to a question about a possible withdrawal from the NPT. Baqaei stressed that Iran considers any weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, to be contrary to religious teachings and beliefs.

Anwar: TNB earmarks RM43bil to upgrade national grid with AI, battery storage systems

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim - Photo: Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: National utility company Tenaga Nasional Bhd has committed RM43 billion to upgrade the national grid infrastructure, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said that the upgrade will incorporate artificial intelligence and battery energy storage systems to build greater resilience and flexibility for the future. "We must invest in improving efficiency and reducing emissions within our existing energy systems, a formidable task, given that fossil fuels still account for nearly 80 per cent of global supply. "Most importantly, this transition must be anchored in equity,' the prime minister said in his keynote address at the Energy Asia 2025 conference today. Anwar also issued a reminder that decarbonisation efforts that ignore the needs of the poor and vulnerable risk deepening inequality. Touching on ASEAN, he highlighted that the bloc has already laid the groundwork for this pragmatic pathway through the ASEAN Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Deployment Framework and Roadmap, which aims to streamline policies and facilitate the flow of capital and carbon across borders. "Malaysia is doing its part. Earlier this year, we passed the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage Bill 2025 to provide a regulatory foundation for this emerging sector. "Petronas is leading the charge with plans to develop three CCS hubs in our offshore waters, serving not just the oil and gas sector but also other hard-to-abate industries,' he said. Anwar added that Malaysia's CCS efforts involve more than 10 international partners, including Japan, South Korea, and global energy firms such as Total and Shell. "Petronas is also working with ENEOS Corporation, Mitsubishi and JX Nippon to explore the transportation and storage of carbon dioxide from the Tokyo Bay area to Malaysia. This positions CCS not only as a vital decarbonisation tool but also as a promising new revenue stream for the region,' he said. The Energy Asia 2025 conference, with the theme "Delivering Asia's Energy Transition', taking place from June 16 to 18, is an opportune moment for Malaysia and the region to take stock of progress made towards energy transition objectives and reinforce national commitments to achieving net-zero goals. The conference is timely, coming at a critical juncture in economic diversification and sustainable development as nations transition from traditional oil to renewable energy and embrace new technologies such as hydrogen and carbon capture. - Bernama

Fadhlina hits out at politicising students' squabble in Terengganu

PUTRAJAYA: Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has condemned the actions of some quarters who politicised the recent fight involving two students at a school in Terengganu. She also denied allegations linking the mother of one of the students involved as being related to her. "The slander linking one of the mothers of the students involved with me is irresponsible and malicious. I have never known the individual," she said in a statement here on Monday (June 16). Fadhlina said the Education Ministry through the Terengganu Education Department had taken action on this case in accordance with the Bullying and Misconduct Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) currently in force. As a follow-up step, she also instructed the ministry's Integrity Unit to conduct further investigations into the incident. "I am closely following the development of this issue and want it to be resolved immediately. The ministry does not compromise with bullying and other misconduct. Strict action must be taken against anyone who is guilty," she said. Fadhlina also stressed the ministry's commitment to ensuring that all educational institutions remain a safe environment for the well-being of students, teachers and all school staff. - Bernama
