Fahmi: Temporary housing underway for Pantai Dalam fire victims

KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil is working to secure temporary housing for more than a dozen families affected by a recent fire in Lembah Pantai.
Fahmi said the matter was discussed with Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif last Saturday.
"There are 14 families currently at the relief centre. Several other families have chosen to stay with their relatives. We are waiting for the relocation… at least there are more comfortable places for them.
"I have yet to receive the latest information but for families with school-going children, we have worked with the Social Welfare Department, the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council to ensure they have equipment, uniforms and such," he said after attending the Daughter of Penang, Daughter of Palestine programme at The Chow Kit Hotel here today.
Fahmi serves as the MP for Lembah Pantai.
Human Resources Minister Steven Sim also attended the event.
Fourteen squatter houses and four shop premises were destroyed in the fire that occurred on the night of Aug 8 in Pantai Dalam.
The victims are currently housed at a relief centre at Sekolah Rendah Agama Al-Khawarizmi.

Najib: Apex Court Dismisses AG's Appeal On Additional Document, Remits Matter To KL High Court

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- The Federal Court today unanimously dismissed the Attorney-General's (AG) appeal regarding the purported existence of an additional document allegedly authorising former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest. The decision was delivered by a three-member bench comprising Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim and Federal Court Judges Datuk Zabariah Mohd Yusof and Datuk Hanipah Farikullah. Justice Zabariah, while reading the judgment, directed that the matter be remitted to the High Court to be heard on its merits before a new judge. On April 28, the Federal Court granted the AG leave to appeal against the Court of Appeal's ruling concerning the alleged additional document related to Najib. Najib, 72, is seeking a mandamus order compelling the respondents to confirm and disclose the existence of the purported document dated Jan 29, 2024. He named the Home Minister, Commissioner-General of Prisons, Attorney-General, Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Director-General of the Legal Affairs Division in the Prime Minister's Department, and the Government of Malaysia as respondents. The former Pekan MP also sought an order that, if the additional document is proven to exist, all or any of the respondents be compelled to enforce it immediately and transfer him from Kajang Prison to his residence in Kuala Lumpur to serve the remainder of his sentence. On July 3 last year, High Court Judge Datuk Amarjeet Singh dismissed Najib's application for leave to commence judicial review proceedings, ruling that the four supporting affidavits submitted, including statements from UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and vice president Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, constituted hearsay and were inadmissible as evidence. Najib has been serving his sentence at Kajang Prison since Aug 23, 2022, following his conviction for misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd.

Malaysia internet coverage hits 98.82% with 5G expansion plans

KUALA LUMPUR: Internet and communication coverage in populated areas across Malaysia has reached 98.82 per cent as of July 31, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. For 5G coverage, he said Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) has completed the construction of 7,489 transmitter sites, collectively providing 82.4 per cent coverage in populated areas. 'The number of 5G subscriptions has exceeded 28 million users, and the mobile 5G broadband penetration rate per 100 people stands at 82.7 per cent,' he said in reply to Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang) at Dewan Rakyat today. Dr Zulkafperi had wanted to know the latest progress and details on the government's 5G rollout programme, as well as the strategies to further expand coverage into rural areas such as Sungai Burong, Sekinchan, and Permatang, with particular focus on those within the Tanjong Karang parliamentary constituency. Fahmi said that in Tanjong Karang, internet and communication coverage in populated areas stands at 99.75 per cent, while the Sungai Besar constituency has recorded a coverage rate of 99.99 per cent. Additionally, he noted that the second 5G network by U Mobile began operating on July 14, with 1,232 sites upgraded to support 5G coverage. On the JENDELA 1 initiative, Fahmi said it is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2025, while plans for JENDELA 2 are currently being reviewed and will be announced in the fourth quarter of 2025 by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). According to Fahmi, the planning process requires assessment of suitable service delivery methods that are fit-for-purpose, as well as the capability of the Universal Service Provision (USP) Fund to finance the project's capital and operational expenditures. 'The types of service delivery solutions currently under consideration are expected to include the construction of new towers and the provision of Internet services via satellite technology,' he explained. Meanwhile, Fahmi said MCMC has undertaken various efforts, including the implementation of the Safe Internet Campaign to raise public awareness, including among schoolchildren, about the dangers of online harm. He added that the ministry is also working on amending existing laws to promote more responsible Internet use and to ensure that crimes such as scams and cyberbullying can be effectively addressed. - Bernama

Malaysia champions CHASE City for sustainable ASEAN urban growth

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has proposed the CHASE City framework as a sustainable urban development model for ASEAN nations. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa emphasised its focus on Clean, Healthy, Advanced, Safe, and Eco-friendly cities. She described the framework as adaptable to diverse ASEAN urban realities while promoting integrated planning. 'This is not a collection of separate agendas, but an integrated philosophy that guides urban policy, design and governance, in a holistic way,' she said. Dr Zaliha spoke at the ASEAN Sustainable Urbanisation Forum held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. She highlighted the framework's alignment with ASEAN's urban priorities, fostering collaboration among governments, businesses, and communities. The Kota MADANI project in Putrajaya was cited as a successful application of CHASE principles. It integrates low-carbon solutions, AI-driven technologies, and green mobility for sustainable urban living. Malaysia's membership in the Davos Baukultur Alliance was also underscored as a milestone. The country is the first non-European member of this global coalition promoting cultural urban development. 'Cities are more than functional spaces. They are cultural and social ecosystems,' Dr Zaliha noted. She pointed to heritage conservation efforts like Warisan KL, which revitalises landmarks such as Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad. These initiatives blend adaptive reuse with sustainable design to boost civic pride and tourism. The forum serves as a platform for ASEAN leaders to exchange sustainable urbanisation strategies. - Bernama
