John Oliver's Moon Mammoth rebrand of Erie's minor league baseball team draws record-sized crowd
The Erie SeaWolves, a Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, became the Erie Moon Mammoths for one day only.
This quirky rebrand comes after the team was selected by comedian John Oliver and his team at HBO's Last Week Tonight for the surprise transformation.
Mayor Joe Schember even issued a proclamation, declaring July 19, 2025, Moon Mammoth Day, to celebrate the occasion, NBC News affiliate WICU reports.
"The inherent eccentricity of minor league baseball is something that we felt a real affinity with," Oliver said. "The more we looked into it the more we thought there might be fun to have. And, once we put out the request for 'who would be down for rebranding,' it was not surprising but edifying to see just how many teams went 'yeah we'd be down for that.'"
The SeaWolves had no say on their rebrand name or logo. The Last Week Tonight team dug into Erie's history to pick Moon Mammoths, a name inspired by the 1991 discovery of woolly mammoth remains in a local lake.
Oliver threw out the first pitch at the game, which drew a record-setting crowd of more than 7,000 fans.
The SeaWolves will don the Mammoths' branding three more times throughout the summer.

Michigan's Sherrone Moore refuses to name Bryce Underwood as starting QB, says it's an open competition
For a quarterback who has yet to start a game in college, Bryce Underwood already has plenty of accolades to his name. He was the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2025 recruiting class and parlayed that success into already appearing on a video game cover. Given his potential and star power, Underwood seems destined to open the season as Michigan's starting quarterback, right? Not so fast. Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore refused to name Underwood as the team's starter, calling the position an "open competition" for now. That may come as a surprise to some considering Underwood's status as a highly touted recruit. But Moore is willing to see what Mikey Keene can do during camp before making his decision. Keene, who joined Michigan as a transfer from Fresno State, threw 18 touchdowns against 11 interceptions last season. While Underwood comes with more hype, Keene does have experience, playing in 39 games over his college career. For all the excitement over Underwood, he could lack the polish necessary to start from Day 1. Underwood will almost certainly see time as Michigan's starter this season, but it's possible Keene's experience makes him the better option for the team initially. Competent quarterback play would go a long way for the Wolverines, who finished 8-5 last season despite a miserable offense. Any improvement on that side of the ball — particularly at quarterback — would go a long way toward making Michigan a national championship contender. Despite last year's struggles, the team still appears on early top-25 lists ahead of the 2025-26 season. Moore has a few weeks before he needs to make a decision. Michigan opens the year against New Mexico on Aug. 30. Who will open the season under center when the Wolverines take the field for that contest? Moore is willing to give it some time before he makes that call.

Expert picks & predictions for tonight's game between the Padres and the Cardinals Rotoworld Best Bet Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) likes the Padres to be in the postseason mix: 'Looking at the second half of the year per Tankathon, San Diego has the 4th-easiest strength of schedule remaining The Padres open the second-half with three games at the Nationals (2-1 record), three more at the Marlins (1-2 record), then to St. Louis for three more road games as part of a nine-game East Coast road trip. After that nine-game road trip, the next 27 games will be on the West Coast for San Diego, whether they are in California, Arizona or Washington (the state). San Diego will be in a prime position to make a run at the playoffs, but I still haven't gotten to the best part. The final month of the season is a great opportunity for the Padres to gain ground too -- in the final 28 games -- 13 of those are against the Orioles, White Sox, and Rockies! I love the Padres to make the postseason as a second-half futures bet.' Please bet responsibly.
