Matikhal residents get desalinated water for the first time as min inaugurates supply
Around four lakh liters of desalinated water will be supplied to the village every day from the plant, a unit of Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL) in Matikhal near Chhatarpur in the district. The plant will also supply the water to Arjeepali, a nearby village soon. Around 1.50 million litres of desalinated water per day would be supplied to both the villages, which have a combined population of around 7,000. "Drinking water problem of these two seashore villages will be solved when they get desalinated water," Pradhan said after inaugurating the water supply.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the seawater desalination plant of IREL on March 5 last year through virtual mode from Bhubaneswar during his visit to the state. After stabilizing the 4.5ml capacity plant and testing it in several rounds, IREL has started to supply water to the nearby village, which was facing drinking water problems due to salinity in groundwater.
"The desalination plant with a capacity of 4.5 ml was installed by IREL at an investment of Rs 135 crore to meet the industrial and drinking water requirements of its employees in OSCOM and to supply RO water to the nearby villages," CVR Murthy, the head of OSCOM, said.

While OSCOM is utilising 1.5ml water from the plant, it will supply 1.5 ml to the villages. Another 1.5 ml is being kept as a reserve for utilisation during emergencies.
The Bhabha Atomic Research Center has provided the technology for desalination of the seawater, while the atomic energy department of the central govt has sponsored the project.
Ganjam district administration has extended help in constructing the overhead tanks and in laying pipes.
Berhampur MP Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy, who was present at the event, urged IREL authorities to set up another such plant and supply drinking water to some more areas, including Chatrapur town, and some villages in Chhatrapur and Rangeilunda blocks. Presently, the water supplied to OSCOM, Berhampur University and Chhatrapur town comes through the Rushikulya river water system.
During the peak of summer, water supply gets drastically reduced from the system and some areas are reeling under water crisis, sources said.

Tamil Nadu Forest Department has successfully implemented an AI-powered early warning system to protect elephants crossing railway tracks in Madukkarai, Coimbatore. The system, operational since November 2023, has recorded 6,592 safe elephant crossings through a network of 12 towers and 24 cameras monitored by 25 forest staff members, resulting in zero elephant deaths on the tracks.
