Court cameras captured the extraordinary moment that a widow hugs her husband's hit-and-run killer in court.
Regina Johnson, who was married to her late husband Charles Johnson for 50 years, shocked the Cherokee County courtroom when she embraced and forgave Joseph Tillman on Thursday (7 August).
Tillman, 24, was under the influence of nitrous oxide when he fatally struck 78-year-old Charles off his e-bike in March 2024.
The 24-year-old pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced to 20 years behind bars.
The unusual moment had Superior Court Judge Tony Baker in disbelief. 'I don't think I've ever seen the wife of a victim hug a defendant where they killed somebody,' he said.

Andrew Bailey, the newly appointed 'co-deputy director' of the FBI, demanded records about minors seeking abortions while he served as Missouri 's attorney general, but a judge temporarily blocked the subpoena. Bailey announced Monday that he was stepping into the role — which he will share with the bureau's current deputy director Dan Bongino — and leaving his post as Missouri attorney general. In March, Bailey subpoenaed Missouri Abortion Fund, a nonprofit that provides financial assistance for locals who can't afford the full cost of abortion care, as part of the state's 2024 lawsuit against Planned Parenthood Great Plains, court records show. The subpoena demanded the nonprofit hand over documents about minors seeking abortions as well as its communication with the branch of Planned Parenthood, records show. Parental consent is required for anyone under 18 seeking an abortion, Missouri law dictates. The subpoena was an 'an abuse of government power' and a 'fishing expedition,' Elad Gross, a lawyer for the nonprofit, which is not a party in the case, told the Missouri Independent in April. The attorney general's 'use of its governmental power to demand records from non-party Missouri Abortion Fund is a violation of the right to reproductive freedom,' Gross wrote in a filing, objecting to the subpoena. The judge overseeing the case temporarily blocked the subpoena in April. The Independent has reached out to the nonprofit and Planned Parenthood about Bailey's new role. In the lawsuit, filed in February 2024, accused Planned Parenthood Great Plains of 'trafficking' minors across state lines for abortions without obtaining parental consent. The suit stems from a video from Project Veritas, a far-right activist group known for recording undercover videos, that depicts a man asking Planned Parenthood workers if his alleged 13-year-old niece could get an abortion without her parents finding out. In an attempt to throw out the suit, Planned Parenthood called the scenario 'fictitious' and argued the video was heavily edited and inaccurate. The court has denied its motions to dismiss the case and Planned Parenthood has filed a counterclaim. This lawsuit is one of several attacks Bailey has made against reproductive rights groups. Last month, Bailey escalated his onslaught to a national scale. He sued Planned Parenthood Federation of America, alleging the nonprofit spread misinformation about the dangers of mifepristone, one drug in a two-drug regimen for medication abortions. Bailey's lawsuit comes as part of a larger effort — following the fall of Roe v. Wade — to question the safety of the abortion drug. Anti-abortion activists earlier this year pushed a report by right-wing think tank Ethics and Public Policy Center claiming serious complications from mifepristone use were 22 times higher than previously reported. Critics slammed the report as 'bogus.' The Trump administration has also targeted Planned Parenthood. President Donald Trump 's 'Big, Beautiful Bill' included a provision that would have stripped Medicaid funds from going toward nonprofits that received more than $800,000 from Medicaid in 2023, including Planned Parenthood and a network of clinics in Maine. A federal judge last month ordered the government to continue reimbursing Planned Parenthood with Medicaid funds.

Donald Trump was handed another blow on Wednesday when a federal judge denied his administration's attempts to release grand jury testimony from the Jeffrey Epstein case. U.S. District Judge Richard Berman deemed Trump's Justice Department did not provide adequate reasoning to unseal the highly-protected materials. He also said that the grand jury motion was likely a 'diversion' coming from the Trump administration. '[T]he court denies the government's motion to unseal the Epstein grand jury transcripts and exhibits,' the Clinton-appointed judge wrote in his Wednesday decision. It comes after Attorney General Pam Bondi moved at the direct of the president this summer to request the documents be unsealed in attempts to satisfy Americans who were enraged over the lackluster review of the Epstein files. It's Baby Luck! Matt Gaetz and wife Ginger welcome newborn son with unusual name
Former Congressman Matt Gaetz and his wife Ginger Gaetz unveiled the unusual name for their newborn baby. The conservative couple sent out multiple social media posts on Wednesday morning showing off their baby boy. 'Beyond grateful to introduce our son,' Ginger wrote on X before revealing that his name was Luckey Louis Gaetz. Gaetz himself then responded to her post by writing, 'Baby Luck has landed.' The baby's name is similar to Ginger's maiden name 'Luckey.' In one post sent out by his wife, Gaetz is seen bringing the baby fresh from the hospital in a carrier seat with the caption 'DADDY.' A whole host of MAGA world personalities congratulated the happy couple, including Gaetz's former congressional colleague Florida Senator Rick Scott as well as Trump advisor Alex Bruesewitz. 'Children are a gift from God! Congrats, @mattgaetz and @GingerLGaetz,' Scott wrote. Back in June, the couple announced the pregnancy with a social media picture of them standing together showing off Ginger's baby bump while holding up a sonogram. In December 2020, Gaetz announced his engagement to Ginger before the couple officially married in southern California the next year. Gaetz's time in Congress was marred by controversy surrounding allegations of sexual misconduct with a minor and illicit drug use which he denies. Following Donald Trump's victory in the 2024 election, Gaetz was nominated as the president's pick for U.S. attorney general. However, a House Ethics Committee report on the misconduct allegations that had not been finalized before Gaetz resigned from Congress ultimately tanked his nomination. Moderate Republican senators vowed to not push him through confirmation, which ultimately led to Gaetz being shelved for Pam Bondi. Gaetz is known for famously ending the speakership of Kevin McCarthy after calling for a no confidence vote.
