‘Drug party' raid: Seven remanded in police custody till July 29
The accused were produced before the holiday court, where public prosecutor Priyanka Vengurlekar sought seven days' police custody. She argued that further interrogation was necessary to trace the origin of the drugs, examine prior party records, and determine the involvement of other individuals. She also noted that some of the accused had criminal backgrounds and that the investigation was at a preliminary stage.
Defence advocate Vijaysinh Thombare, representing Khewalkar, alleged that his client was being falsely implicated due to political motives. 'This is nothing but an attempt to sabotage my client's political career. His wife holds a political office, and this appears to be a trap,' he told the court. He claimed that there was no evidence of drug consumption by Khewalkar and that no medical report had been submitted to the court.
According to the prosecution, Pune Police raided a serviced apartment in the early hours of Sunday based on specific information. The apartment, booked in Khewalkar's name, was the site of a party where five men and two women were present. Police seized liquor bottles, hookah setups, ganja, and 2.7 grams of cocaine—classified as an intermediate quantity under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS), 1985. Videos from the party, showing scenes of chaos and a woman in distress, went viral on social media.
Prosecutor Vengurlekar said that the accused were habitual offenders and reiterated that the police followed due procedure. 'This is not an isolated case. The recovered contraband and supporting evidence validate the charges,' she said.
Thombare countered that his client had been under surveillance for months. 'Police have previously followed him on two occasions and collected CCTV footages from hotels. This is the third time, and it seems to be a deliberate move to frame him. My client is not a criminal,' he said.
Advocate Abid Mulani, representing two other accused, raised legal concerns over the arrests. 'The investigating agency failed to inform the accused of the grounds of their arrest at the time of detention, violating Section 50 of the Criminal Procedure Code. This renders their continued custody unlawful,' he argued. He submitted that accused number 3 and number 4 neither possessed nor consumed any narcotics, making the invocation of the NDPS Act against them untenable.
While the court has kept the question of the legality of arrest open for further consideration, Mulani contended that continued custody of these two accused is unwarranted and amounts to a violation of their fundamental rights under Article 21 of the Constitution.

Delhi Police arrests woman wanted under MCOCA after 2-year chase
New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) Delhi Police has arrested a 58-year-old woman wanted in multiple cases from central Delhi after she evaded arrest for more than two years, an official said on Friday. Meeta, a resident of Nand Nagri in northeast Delhi, was wanted in a case registered under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in 2023 and had been absconding since. The accused is a known bootlegger and drug peddler, with as many as 20 criminal cases registered against her, DCP (Central) Nidhin Valsan said, adding that she was a history-sheeter at the Nand Nagri police station. Police received a tip-off that the accused would be arriving near a Delhi Milk Scheme (DMS) booth in central Delhi to meet someone. Accordingly, a trap was laid which led to her arrest, the DCP said. 'During questioning, Meeta told police that she entered the world of crime at a young age. Her first arrest came in 1985 under the Excise Act," Valsan said. Over the years, Meeta along with her associates ran a racket involved in the illegal trade of alcohol and narcotic substances, prompting the invocation of MCOCA in 2023, the DCP said. Following the registration of the case, she went into hiding and kept shifting locations to evade arrest. Her previous criminal record includes cases under the NDPS Act, Excise Act, and Indian Penal Code, ranging from drug trafficking and bootlegging to assault, obstruction of public servants, and harbouring proclaimed offenders, the officer said. Ajit Pawar warns NCP workers against misconduct, says such acts tarnish party image
'Do not go to Chaufula and do not open fire in the air. Such acts not only bring disrepute to the individual but also to the party,' he told party functionaries at a gathering in Pune. His remarks come in the wake of two recent controversies linked to NCP members, which included an incident in Pune district where the brother of an NCP MLA allegedly fired a gun at a 'tamasha' venue in Daund. Pune, Aug 1 (PTI) Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP president Ajit Pawar on Friday cautioned party workers against misconduct, including public disturbances and celebratory firing, saying such actions tarnish the reputation of both the individual and the party. Chaufula is a village on the Pune-Solapur Road in Daund tehsil, known for its folk art centres showcasing lavani and tamasha performances. Pawar also spoke about the alleged dowry death of Vaishnavi Hagawane, whose in-laws, including NCP leader Rajendra Hagawane, face accusations of harassment. 'Is it the party that asked the family to harass their daughter-in-law?' he questioned, adding that he would not have attended their wedding had he known of their actions. The grand wedding in 2023 was a high-profile event, where Pawar himself handed the couple the keys to an SUV. Vaishnavi (26), daughter-in-law of Hagawane, allegedly died by suicide at her marital home in Bavdhan, Pimpri-Chinchwad, on May 16. Her family has alleged that she was harassed for dowry, including a demand for Rs 2 crore to purchase land. Hagawane has since been expelled from the party. Pawar further advised party workers to maintain communal harmony by upholding the ideologies of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj, Mahatma Phule, and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.
