Anwar: October summit to be Asean's biggest ever
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said heads of government from Asean, including dialogue partners, would be in attendance.
Anwar said it is time for Asean to rise to the occasion and ensure that all leaders have a fruitful dialogue.
"In the final week of October, our aim is as audacious as it is consequential - to deliver Asean's largest and most high-profile gathering of world leaders to date.
"It will be a veritable assembly of the world's principal centres of power and influence.
"We look forward to welcoming the heads of government of Asean and our dialogue partners, including United States President Donald Trump and, I believe, President Xi Jinping of China.
"In addition, we have received positive indications of attendance from Brazilian President Lula da Silva and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who currently hold the BRICS and the G20 presidencies, respectively," he said in his speech at the 58th Asean Day celebration.
Anwar said that securing their presence is only the first step, as the greater test is to ensure that they leave Malaysia and Asean feeling that their time was well spent.
He said it was their duty to ensure the visit yields results of lasting value.
"The eyes of the world will be upon us.
"We must therefore rise to the occasion," he said.
He said that Malaysia stands at the threshold of the culmination point, where what it does in the month ahead will decide how history judges its year as Asean chair.
Anwar said Asean should also move to ensure that it remains durable and strong, with enhanced economic relations through intra-Asean trade and investments, regional efforts in energy, the green agenda and connectivity, which happen to be the thrust of its economic agenda.
"I believe much more needs to be done.
"One of the key issues to be deliberated in October will be intra-Asean trade, cross-border investments, energy and connectivity," he said.
Meanwhile, Anwar said the Asean founding fathers would look at the bloc now with great pride.
However, he said the motivations and concerns of those who signed the Bangkok Declaration in 1967 should not be taken for granted.

Indigenous voices key to Malaysia's unity agenda, says deputy minister
KUALA LUMPUR: The voices of indigenous communities will remain central to Malaysia's national unity agenda, ensuring social justice and cultural recognition. Deputy National Unity Minister Saraswathy Kandasami emphasised the Orang Asli and indigenous groups as vital to the nation's demographic and cultural identity. 'Efforts to recognise, protect and empower these communities must be continuous and inclusive,' she said at the Citra Nusa@Muzium Programme: ASEAN Natives and Indigenous Festival 2025. The event, held at the National Museum, celebrates Malaysia's ASEAN Chair role and International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. It showcases cultural heritage from Malaysia's Orang Asli and ASEAN ethnic groups like Indonesia's Mentawai and Thailand's Karen. Saraswathy described the festival as a platform to highlight Malaysia's diverse heritage and boost public appreciation of its cultural wealth. JMM director-general Datuk Kamarul Baharin A. Kasim stressed that indigenous communities are not marginalised but key contributors to national progress. 'We aim to show their success in leadership, entrepreneurship and even social influence,' he said, citing Orang Asli influencer Nur Rafidah Man. The festival's theme, 'Dahulu & Kini', features traditional dances like Sabah's Sumazau and Sarawak's Ngajat. Visitors can explore craft demonstrations, traditional food preparation, and indigenous handicraft sales. Interactive activities include blowpipe competitions, kerchang games, and children's contests. The two-day event underscores Malaysia's commitment to preserving and promoting indigenous heritage. - Bernama

PM Anwar visits comedian Amir Raja Lawak, offers support for ailing father
KOTA BHARU, Aug 9 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today spent about 30 minutes visiting popular comedian Mohammad Amirullah Azmi, better known as Amir Raja Lawak, at the latter's shop near the Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium, here. Anwar was accompanied by Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud. During the meeting with Amir, 39, Anwar expressed concern for the comedian's father, who is undergoing treatment for colon cancer at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM), in Kubang Kerian. As a gesture of support, Anwar and Mohd Nassuruddin presented a cash donation to Amir. The visit followed Amir's Facebook post yesterday, in which he expressed his wish to meet the Prime Minister. Meanwhile, Amir expressed his gratitude and said he was deeply moved to meet Anwar. 'I only posted on Facebook because I knew the Prime Minister would be attending the closing ceremony of the PMR (MADANI Rakyat Programme) near my shop. 'I asked who was arranging for his (Anwar's) presence, and I didn't think the Prime Minister himself knew about my problem. Amir said that he was informed by the Prime Minister's political secretary Datuk Farhan Fauzi yesterday, that Anwar would be stopping by his shop. 'I am very grateful and surprised. I thought that only the Prime Minister would be present, but many other senior leaders were there as well,' he said. — Bernama

PM Anwar open to new urgent projects in Kelantan despite RMK13 allocations
KOTA BHARU: The government remains open to reviewing new and urgent project proposals from Kelantan, even though major projects have already been allocated under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that project prioritisation was determined through direct engagement with the state government. 'We have presented RMK13, but new applications have been submitted, and if they are urgent, we will study them, especially flood mitigation, water supply, energy, and hardcore poverty eradication,' he said. He added that the national budget process would consider RMK13 while reviewing additional priorities. Anwar spoke at the closing ceremony of the Kelantan 2025 MADANI Rakyat Program at Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium. Present were Science Minister Chang Lih Kang, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Chief Secretary Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud. Anwar noted that engagement sessions have been streamlined to include state government input. 'Every state visit includes a session for feedback and monitoring of ongoing projects to ensure effective implementation,' he explained. On the MADANI Rakyat Program, Anwar said it strengthened government-community ties. 'Through this program, we aim to understand public concerns and elevate initiatives needing attention,' he said. The three-day event, led by MOSTI, featured over 100 public services and tech exhibitions. It was supported by ICU JPM and multiple government agencies. - Bernama
