'Narsimha Rao Learnt 17 Languages': Andhra CM Naidu Backs Hindi Adoption
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday defended the importance of learning Hindi and praised former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao as a scholar who mastered 17 languages.
Naidu made the comment while speaking at a lecture on 'The Life and Legacy of former PM Shri PV Narasimha Rao" in New Delhi.
'While today we are all asking, 'Why should we learn Hindi?', former Prime Minister Narasimha Rao was a scholar of 17 languages, he didn't just learn Hindi but other languages too and that's how he became a great man," the Andhra CM said.

Naidu's remarks come amid fresh debates over the promotion of Hindi in non-Hindi-speaking states and fears of language imposition.
In his address, Naidu hailed Rao as a 'great statesman" whose bold reforms continue to shape the country's progress even today. He credited Rao with launching India's economic liberalisation during a time of deep financial crisis.
'Before 1991, India followed the socialist economic model. Economy saw 'licence raj', foreign investment was limited… was facing a major economic crisis. exchange reserves hit an all time low. We were forced to pledge our sovereign gold," he said.
'It was time to bring bold reforms, and usher in forward-looking policy. He became (Rao) PM in June 1991, he recognised the crisis was an opportunity, and that India needed bold economic reforms. He launched the historic economic reforms," Naidu said.
'He changed the future of India, we are all here today enjoying the fruits of this reform," he said.
Naidu pointed out that Rao led a minority government, which made pushing such reforms even more remarkable. 'He (Rao) was heading a minority government, not a comfortable government. To bring in bold reforms, political consensus is required. He was able to convince all stakeholders," he said.
He also praised former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for building infrastructure during his tenure and credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ensuring political stability and driving economic growth.
'Modi ji brought not just political stability, but also a renewed sense of global pride," Naidu stated.

Uber puts robotaxi plan in top gear, joins hands with Lucid and Nuro; first vehicle to hit road in 2026. Details here
Uber Technologies on Thursday announced that it has tied up with electric vehicle maker Lucid Group and self-driving tech startup Nuro to launch robotaxis in 2026. The ride-sharing company or its third-party partners will buy and operate Lucid Gravity SUVs outfitted with Nuro Driver technology on its network. It aims to launch its first robotaxi in 2026 and plans to deploy at least 20,000 of the vehicles over the next six years. Uber also announced that it is making separate multi-hundred-million-dollar investments in both Lucid and Nuro. The funding will include $300 million for Lucid that will be used in part to upgrade its assembly line to integrate Nuro hardware into the Gravity vehicles. After the announcement, Lucid shares rallied 34 per cent, while Uber stock was little changed. Earlier this week, Uber had announced a tie-up with Chinese AV maker Baidu to deploy robotaxis in several non-US markets. Currently, autonomous rides are available through the Uber app in Phoenix, Austin, Atlanta and Abu Dhabi. Prototype robotaxis developed by Lucid and Nuro are already in operation on Nuro's Las Vegas closed-circuit testing grounds, reported Bloomberg. Marc Winterhoff, Lucid's interim CEO, said Uber chose its SUV because the company can integrate the necessary hardware at its factory. Nuro's software will be added once Uber receives the vehicles. 'This is a stepping stone on our journey to expand our tech leadership from electric vehicles and licensing into partnerships in other areas,' Winterhoff told Bloomberg this week. 'A lot can happen in six years. I really see this as the first starting point,' he added. Separately, Lucid said it is planning a 1-for-10 reverse stock split, subject to shareholder approval. The emerging autonomous taxi market is gaining momentum, with Google subsidiary Waymo currently holding the strongest position in the United States. Electric vehicle maker Tesla unveiled its first robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, in late June, though with limited scope and a very small fleet.

Bengaluru ranks 36th among 44 Indian cities in Swachh Survekshan audit
Bengaluru has secured the 36th position out of 44 cities in the 'above 10 lakh population' category in the Swachh Survekshan 2024, the annual cleanliness survey conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). In the previous year, the 'above 10 lakh' category was dropped. However, in 2022, Bengaluru had ranked 43rd among 45 participating cities in the same category. This year's result marks an improvement of eight positions compared to the 2022 ranking. In 2023, Bengaluru ranked 125th out of 446 cities in the 'above one lakh population' category. Top performers Gujarat's Ahmedabad topped the 'above 10 lakh' category with a score of 12,079, followed closely by Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) with 12,067 points and Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) with 12,001. Bengaluru scored 6,842. In the 'Super Swachh League City' category, Mysuru secured 5th place. In the State-wise rankings, Bengaluru stood at 15th. Davangere emerged as the top-performing city in Karnataka with a score of 9,131, followed by Hubballi-Dharwad and Hosadurga. 'Room for improvement' BBMP Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao acknowledged that Bengaluru has room for improvement and expressed confidence in better results in the future. 'We have good plans for managing construction debris and solid waste, which will improve our standing in the next survey. We are currently transitioning to an Integrated Solid Waste Management system. Once that is in place, we will rank better,' Mr. Rao told The Hindu. However, activists say that Bengaluru should have done much better. 'Bengaluru is losing score in a few parameters consistently since the last three Swachh Survekshan audits, among which is waste processing,' V. Ramprasad, a civic activist, said. He said that Mysuru has improved substantially despite collecting less money from people when compared to Bengaluru. How is it calculated Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) were assessed quarterly across four phases. They updated their Management Information System (MIS) monthly, which was validated through citizen feedback and reviewed by third-party assessors. Indicator-wise progress was documented and verified during the final survey in February 2025. The new Swachh Survekshan indicators focused on cleanliness, waste segregation, collection, processing, landfill and dumpsite management, wastewater treatment, reuse, and faecal sludge management. MoHUA conducted virtual sessions with States and ULBs to explain the methodology. Citizen engagement was vital, supported by digital, social, and traditional media campaigns to raise awareness and promote participation in the cleanliness mission.
