Bengaluru ranks 36th among 44 Indian cities in Swachh Survekshan audit

The Hindu17-07-2025
Bengaluru has secured the 36th position out of 44 cities in the 'above 10 lakh population' category in the Swachh Survekshan 2024, the annual cleanliness survey conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
In the previous year, the 'above 10 lakh' category was dropped. However, in 2022, Bengaluru had ranked 43rd among 45 participating cities in the same category. This year's result marks an improvement of eight positions compared to the 2022 ranking. In 2023, Bengaluru ranked 125th out of 446 cities in the 'above one lakh population' category.
Top performers
Gujarat's Ahmedabad topped the 'above 10 lakh' category with a score of 12,079, followed closely by Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) with 12,067 points and Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) with 12,001. Bengaluru scored 6,842.
In the 'Super Swachh League City' category, Mysuru secured 5th place. In the State-wise rankings, Bengaluru stood at 15th. Davangere emerged as the top-performing city in Karnataka with a score of 9,131, followed by Hubballi-Dharwad and Hosadurga.
'Room for improvement'
BBMP Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao acknowledged that Bengaluru has room for improvement and expressed confidence in better results in the future. 'We have good plans for managing construction debris and solid waste, which will improve our standing in the next survey. We are currently transitioning to an Integrated Solid Waste Management system. Once that is in place, we will rank better,' Mr. Rao told The Hindu.
However, activists say that Bengaluru should have done much better.
'Bengaluru is losing score in a few parameters consistently since the last three Swachh Survekshan audits, among which is waste processing,' V. Ramprasad, a civic activist, said.
He said that Mysuru has improved substantially despite collecting less money from people when compared to Bengaluru.
How is it calculated
Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) were assessed quarterly across four phases. They updated their Management Information System (MIS) monthly, which was validated through citizen feedback and reviewed by third-party assessors. Indicator-wise progress was documented and verified during the final survey in February 2025.
The new Swachh Survekshan indicators focused on cleanliness, waste segregation, collection, processing, landfill and dumpsite management, wastewater treatment, reuse, and faecal sludge management. MoHUA conducted virtual sessions with States and ULBs to explain the methodology. Citizen engagement was vital, supported by digital, social, and traditional media campaigns to raise awareness and promote participation in the cleanliness mission.

Revanth Reddy should make way for Ponnam Prabhakar or Mahesh Kumar Goud as CM: BJP president

Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao suggested that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy should quit and hand over the post to his Cabinet colleague Ponnam Prabhakar or PCC President Mahesh Kumar Goud, both of them belonging to the Backward Classes (BCs) if he was really sincere about the BC welfare. In an informal interaction with the media at the State party office on Friday, Mr. Rao 'thanked' Mr. Reddy for making the suggestion of making former Governor Bandaru Dattatreya as the next Vice President and said the party will take a call on that and offered his own piece of advice to the CM. The BJP leader has accused Mr. Reddy of insulting the entire BC community with his comments that Prime Minister Modi belonged to a 'converted BC caste' and wanted to know what religion or caste his (CM) leader Rahul Gandhi belonged to. The Chief Minister should be given a 'Goebbels Prize' for all kinds of propaganda he was indulging in, he said and demanded the Congress first fulfil the promise of 42% quota for the BC in the local body polls by amending Section 285 of the Panchayat Raj Act to make it 'legally strong'. Mr. Rao said the Telangana government caste census cannot be a role model for the country when it had reduced the BCs numbers. It was unfair and outrageous to add 'all the Muslims' in the 10% quota out of the 42% BC quota when only a few castes like 'dudekulas', 'hajis' and 'pakirs' were included in the BC-B category earlier. The Congress government has made only two persons from among BC as Cabinet Ministers whereas the majority of Ministers in the Modi Cabinet belonged to BCs, he said. The BJP chief also dismissed about the internal fights in the party as a 'family' issue and said the Central leadership is seized of the issue. He would soon constitute a new State committee with 20 persons and 33% posts would be given to women. There is no pressure on him about the new party posts and wanted the aspirants to go to the people and fight on public issues.

Urbanisation must focus on ease of living, not just housing: MoHUA official

NEW DELHI: Urbanisation should go beyond housing to focus on improving ease of living, said D Thara , additional secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs . Thara stressed the need to 'reimagine urbanisation' by adopting a contextual and customized approach, rather than merely delivering housing supply. 'We need to change the way we view land and adopt a new paradigm,' she said. With urbanisation projected to accelerate sharply—matching the scale of the last century within the next two decades—she highlighted the importance of balancing urban growth with the conservation of rural and agricultural land. "We need to densify systematically," she added. Thara also noted the government's efforts to formulate policies for rejuvenating historic and business city cores, aiming to modernize urban infrastructure while preserving cultural heritage. FICCI and L&T Technology Services released a whitepaper during the conclave highlighting the need for cyber resilience in the face of increasing digitisation of core urban services. The paper points to a rising threat landscape targeting critical infrastructure — including power grids, telecom networks, financial institutions, and healthcare systems — through AI-driven phishing, ransomware, and deepfake impersonations. It advocates for a federated threat intelligence architecture that enables real-time data sharing across infrastructure sectors, supported by AI-based detection and automated response systems. Citing the MahaCyber initiative in Maharashtra, the report showcases how a state-level cyber coordination centre can serve as a blueprint. MahaCyber integrates law enforcement, CERTs, and private operators to deliver real-time cyber monitoring, AI-enabled risk scoring, and public-sector incident response workflows. Speaking at the event, OP Agarwal, advisor, FICCI Working Group on Urban Development, said innovation in the urban sector will be critical for India's growth trajectory. Vipul Roongta, MD & CEO of HDFC Capital Advisors, emphasised that urban development and housing must progress together to ensure both affordability and livability.
