BJP chief seeks transparency on caste survey, vows priority for BCs in elections

Hyderabad: Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao on Monday urged the state govt to publicly release the findings of the recently conducted caste survey. He alleged that the Revanth Reddy administration is attempting to mislead the Backward Classes (BC) community by citing only 42% reservation, despite reports suggesting that BCs constitute around 52% of the state's population.
Addressing members of various BC associations, Rao stressed the need for transparency in the survey process. "The caste survey was not conducted by a central agency, but by the state govt. Therefore, it is crucial that the collected data is verified and made public," he said.
Rao reiterated the BJP's commitment to ensuring adequate political representation for BCs in the upcoming local body elections. He assured that the party would allocate the maximum number of seats to BC candidates, regardless of whether the Congress govt upholds proper reservation norms.
"We are dedicated to giving BCs top priority in the forthcoming elections," he said.

The BJP leader also criticised the seat allocation pattern in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. Out of 52 councillor seats, he claimed that the BC-E reservation category enabled Muslim candidates to secure 35 seats, which he argued came at the cost of genuine BC communities such as the Yadavas and Gouds. "This imbalance undermines the rightful share of traditional BC communities," Rao said.

Rao concluded by urging the Other Backward Classes community to unite behind the BJP in both the upcoming local body and assembly elections. He emphasised that their collective support would be crucial in bringing about a political shift in the state. "The strength of the BC community is key to the BJP's mission to form the next govt in Telangana," he added.

AIADMK supports State govt.'s efforts on Keeladi issue: Edappadi K. Palaniswami
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Wednesday said his party supported the efforts of the State government with regard to archaeological excavations. After visiting Keeladi Museum here, Mr. Palaniswami said he, however, could not comment on the ongoing dialogue between the State and the Central governments on publishing the Keeladi report on the initial phase of excavation conducted by Archaeological Survey of India as he was unclear about what the Centre had asked. The statement was regarding the Centre's direction to ASI archaeologist Amarnath Ramakrishna to revise the report on Keeladi excavation and his subsequent refusal to do so. The former Chief Minister said the archaeological excavations at Keeladi were carried out during the AIADMK regime. 'It was during the AIADMK regime that the Keeladi excavations first began in 2014. The first phase of the study, led by Amarnath Ramakrishnan, started in 2015.' The excavations were conducted in the subsequent years. Above all, it was former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, who laid the foundation for a grand museum worth ₹12.5 crore to display the artefacts found then. During the third phase of excavation in 2017-18, as many as 5,820 artefacts were unearthed. Further, in 2018, six samples were sent to a laboratory in Florida, USA, and it was confirmed that the Keeladi civilisation dated back to 6th century BC. 'When I spoke in the Assembly in 2018, I mentioned that the Keeladi study plays a significant role in highlighting our traditional glory. We inaugurated an exhibition of 6,720 archaeological artifacts on the campus of Madurai World Tamil Sangam,' he added. In 2020, some of the artifacts were displayed at Chennai Book Fair, but today, some were politicising Keeladi for gaining political mileage, he further said.

Denial of rice quota an act of political vendetta by Centre, says CPI in Kerala
The Union government's denial of Kerala's rightful allotment of rice and wheat during the Onam season is a deliberate act of vengeance against the people of the State, alleged Communist Party of India (CPI) district secretary K.G. Sivanandan. He was inaugurating a district-wide people's protest organised under the leadership of the CPI district council at Vellangallur on Wednesday. Calling it a calculated move by the BJP to impose an economic and political blockade on Kerala, Mr. Sivanandan said the attempt is aimed at fuelling anti-government sentiment in the State. 'The politically enlightened people of Kerala are not ones to forget such injustices easily. Since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power at the Centre in 2014 under Narendra Modi, Kerala has been consistently targeted,' he said. 'Kerala is not asking for charity, but for its rightful share,' he said. 'Essential food items like rice and wheat meant for the poor through the ration system are a matter of entitlement, not benevolence. The Union food and public distribution minister not only denied the allocation but went a step further by mocking the Kerala delegation's plea at a press conference immediately after receiving their representation.' He urged for widespread resistance against the Centre's move, which he said amounted to starving the people of Kerala during the Onam season. The CPI will remain at the forefront of this struggle, he said. The meeting was presided over by CPI local secretary Suresh Panikkassery. CPI leader C.N. Jayadevan addressed the protest in Manalur. K.K. Valsaraj (Guruvayur), V.S. Sunil Kumar (Thanniam), T.R. Ramesh Kumar (Kodannur), P. Balachandran, MLA, (Ollukkara), V.S. Prince (Amballur), K.P. Sandeep (East Anthikkad), Sheela Vijayakumar (Chazhoor), and Ragesh Kaniyamparambil (Vengidang) also led protests in various locations. V.R. Sunil Kumar, MLA, (Kodungallur) and K.S. Jaya (North Padiyoor) inaugurated the demonstrations in their respective constituencies. The CPI held torchlight processions and protest dharnas in over 100 locations across all constituencies in the district, as part of the coordinated mass agitation.

Catholic rites hold united protest against arrest of nuns in BJP-ruled Chhattisgarh
The various rites of the Catholic Church in Kerala came together for a joint protest on Wednesday against the arrest of two Keralite nuns at Durg in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled Chhattisgarh last Friday on charges of forced conversion and human trafficking, allegations which various political parties and civil society have termed baseless. Church leaders and laity members from the Syro-Malankara, Syro-Malabar, and Latin rites took part in the silent march with their mouths gagged to Raj Bhavan, in a reflection of the groundswell of anger and concern over the arrests. Addressing the protest, Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, president of the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council, said those showing friendly gestures towards the Christian community should show the sincerity to 'walk the talk,' in what was interpreted as a thinly-veiled message to the BJP. 'When such incidents happen, those in power should display the will power to address it immediately. That is when minority communities like ours feel safe in the country. The State BJP president himself has said that the allegations against the nuns are false. Why are his words not being believed? Not only should the nuns be released, but action also should be taken against those who put them in jail so that such incidents are not repeated,' he said. Countering the allegations of forced conversions against the Christian community, he said Christians still constitute only less than 2.5% of India's population, which would not have been the situation if the community had been converting people for the past 2,000 years as alleged. 'The minority Christian community in this country is only demanding the rulers to protect the right for anyone to believe and propagate any religion of their choice. Our protest is not a challenge against the government or a particular party. Some people are claiming that such protests are happening only in Kerala. As a State which remains in the forefront in literacy and where missionaries have brought education to the masses, all the right-thinking people of Kerala are questioning this injustice,' said the Cardinal. He said that more than the denial of bail to the nuns, the angry shouts of the mob that gathered outside the court against them pained him. 'Is this a secular democracy? Is this the age-old Indian culture which has traditionally respected those who wore robes and went out to serve the community,' he asked. The State has over the past four days witnessed bipartisan protests over the arrest of sisters Preeta Mary and Vandana Francis of the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate (ASMI) order.
