He said the latest trends in technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), internet of things (IoT), have to go hand in hand with skilling of manpower, ensuring authenticity, reliability of the data quality with advanced design of algorithms holds the key in this endeavour.
He further mentioned that data generated by the statistical systems has been the bed rock of policymaking in India.
Suman K Bery, Vice Chairperson NITI Aayog and Chairman, EAC to the PM, said the way forward on integration of conventional data with alternate data sources.

He highlighted the importance of ensuring quality of administrative data.
The insights from traditional as well as alternate data sources need to be strengthened with emphasis on data processing and assimilation, he added.
Statistics and Programme Implementation Secretary Saurabh Garg said MoSPI has been brainstorming from the last couple of years as to how alternate data sources can be integrated in the existing national statistical system and this workshop is the culmination of the efforts made in past.
With the objective of enhancing harmonisation of data having practical utility, Garg enlisted five key building blocks -- meta data structures, international and national classifications, unique identifiers, self-quality assessment tools, and reconciliation of diverse data to achieve such endeavour.
P R Mesharam, Director General (Data Governance), MoSPI, reiterated that NSO India, with its time-tested statistical products, has facilitated the evidence-based policy making over a long period of time.
The need of the hour is to use alternative data sources and frontier technologies to strengthen data eco-system of the country and provide data for evidence-based decision making in real time, he said.
He added that this is in line with developing enhanced statistical capabilities "supporting our vision of becoming a developed nation".
On the opening day of the workshop, MoSPI also released annual publication 'EnviStats India, 2025: Environment Statistics'.
The publication is a key resource for policymakers, researchers and other stakeholders, offering a comprehensive overview of the country's environmental landscape.

District Gears Up for Kharif-2025: Officials Directed to Ensure Equipment Readiness at Paddy Procurement Centers
Gadwal: In light of the upcoming Kharif-2025 season, District Additional Collector (Revenue) Lakshmi Narayana has directed officials to ensure that all essential equipment is readily available at the paddy procurement centers. On Tuesday, a review meeting was held in the chamber of the Collector's Office regarding the availability and requirements of equipment at paddy procurement centers for the Kharif-2025 season. The meeting was attended by officials from relevant departments and secretaries of market committees. During the meeting, the Additional Collector stated that equipment such as tarpaulins, moisture meters, electronic weighing scales, paddy cleaners, paddy dryers, automatic paddy cleaners, caliphers, and husk removers are currently available at the centers. However, he emphasized the need to make any additional equipment available promptly. He instructed the concerned officers to submit the list of required equipment to the District Marketing Department within two days. Agriculture officials were also directed to create awareness among farmers about the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) announced for the Kharif season through Agricultural Extension Officers (AEOs). Additionally, existing equipment at the procurement centers must be quickly returned to the respective market committees. Directions were given to the concerned departments, including the Co-operative and DRDO wings, to facilitate this process efficiently. The review meeting was attended by District Marketing Officer Pushpamma, District Civil Supplies Officer Swami Kumar, Civil Supplies District Manager Vimala, District Co-operative Officer Srinivas Rao, DRDO AO Siddayya, and other officials.

‘Severe manpower shortage': Parliamentary Committee tells MoSPI to fill at least 50% vacancies this year
Amid what it has called a 'severe manpower shortage', the Standing Committee on Finance has asked the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) to fill at least half its vacant positions this year. 'The target of the Ministry should be to fill at least 50 per cent of the existing vacancies across all cadres within this year. It is also expected that the rest of the vacancies be filled up in a time-bound manner thereafter,' the committee said in a report presented in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. MoSPI — which has asked for an additional 2,594 junior and senior statistical officers — has consistently faced a shortage of officers, with the standing committee noting in its report that the number of vacancies in the ministry's Field Operations Division — which is in charge of conducting surveys — rose from 614 in 2023 to 908 at the beginning of 2025. This shortage of manpower, the report said, 'affects the quality of the data'. 'According to the Ministry, the same is being addressed through engaging contractual manpower and training them. The Committee is of the view that this is a stopgap arrangement and does not fully address the issue. The Committee therefore recommends the Ministry to deal with the issue of severe manpower shortage on priority basis and take concrete steps towards recruitment of regular field-based staff in a time-bound manner,' it added. Back in June, Rao Inderjit Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of MoSPI, had told The Indian Express that 700 Junior Statistical Officers had been recruited for posting in different Regional Offices of the National Statistics Office through the Staff Selection Commission (SSC). 'Moreover, survey-specific engagement of contractual staff is being made with multi-level training focusing more on the quality of the data,' Singh had added. In response, MoSPI had told the standing committee in May that the SSC had provided a list of 725 candidates to fill the vacancies for Junior Statistical Officers for 2024, with appointment letters being issued to 663 candidates through the 'Rozgar Mela' held on April 26. The Staff Selection Committee has also been informed of 245 vacancies in the post of Junior Statistical Officers for 2025. 'Further, it is to mention that the proposal of 2nd Cadre Review of Subordinate Statistical Service (SSS) has been submitted to Dept. of Expenditure, wherein additional strength of 1,767 Junior Statistical Officers (JSOs) and 827 Senior Statistical Officers (SSOs) have been requested,' the standing committee's report said, quoting MoSPI. The Standing Committee on Finance is chaired by Bhartruhari Mahtab, the Bharatiya Janata Party's Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha from Cuttack, Odisha.
