ADNOC L&S, Regent to trial high-speed electric seagliders
The announcement was made at the 'Make it in the Emirates' event, currently taking place in Abu Dhabi.
Regent's 'Viceroy' seaglider – a next-generation maritime craft – combines the speed of an aircraft with the convenience of a boat, offering high-speed, zero-emission transport.
The proof-of-concept is the first phase in a potential multi-stage deployment that could see the technology incorporated more widely across ADNOC L&S's offshore logistics operations.
Regent will manufacture its electric seagliders in the UAE. It will also provide aftermarket services such as maintenance, boosting local manufacturing capabilities and strengthening the UAE's industrial base.
The proof-of-concept trial will also be managed by a UAE-based seaglider operator, delivering additional in-country value and positioning the UAE as a hub for advanced maritime innovation.
ADNOC L&S Chief Executive Captain Abdulkareem Al Masabi said the group was committed to adopting innovative technologies that enhance the safety, sustainability and efficiency of its operations.
"This proof-of-concept trial with Regent's seagliders marks an important milestone in our journey to decarbonise offshore logistics, while supporting 'Make it in the Emirates' through the development of future-ready maritime capabilities in the UAE," he noted.
The Viceroy can carry up to 12 passengers or 1,600 kg of cargo and is capable of speeds up to 300 km per hour for routes up to 300km.
Its ability to operate in multiple modes - floating, foiling and flying - offers unique versatility and comfort for offshore transport.
Compared with helicopters, the craft provides up to 80% lower operational costs and is equipped with advanced sensors and automated controls to ensure safe and reliable operations.
Regent Co-founder and CEO Billy Thalheimer said: "We could ask for no better end user for seagliders in the UAE than the largest energy producer in the country and leader in innovation and sustainability."
"Seagliders will drastically reduce the time, cost, and emissions of offshore energy logistics, and we look forward to working together to set a new standard for the energy industry," he stated.

Dubai-based carrier Emirates officially launched its new daily service to Hangzhou, China. This would be the 5th route to the Chinese mainland and the second new destination added to the airline's roster in under a month, following Shenzhen. The launch took place on 30th July with a debut flight from Dubai to Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport. Passengers aboard the new flight EK310 were welcomed by local dignitaries, airport officials, a ceremonial water cannon salute and received memorabilia from the airport. The inaugural flight carried passengers from across Emirates' global network, including key markets like the UAE, Nigeria, Italy, Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Brazil, as well as a VIP delegation led by Emirates' senior management and members of the international media. 'China has become one of the world's leading aviation markets, and Emirates is proud to have played a role in its development. Adding two new gateways within just one month is a major milestone that underscores our deepening commitment to the Chinese mainland,' said Adnan Kazim, Emirates' Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, regarding the launch. Kazim explained that the expansion demonstrated the conviction of the company's East and Southeast Asia growth strategy, which has gained momentum over the past year. With rising demand, Kazim is optimistic that its global network will continue connecting people, businesses, and economies across Asia and beyond. Emirates remains committed to delivering seamless, reliable connectivity between this dynamic region and the world. 'We extend our sincere appreciation to the Civil Aviation Administration of China, Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, and all our local partners for their invaluable support in enabling the successful start of this route,' said Kazim. The Emirates Boeing 777-300ER (EK310) is scheduled to depart Dubai at 09:40 AM and arrive in Hangzhou at 22:00 PM. The return flight, EK311, departs Hangzhou at 00:10 AM, landing in Dubai at 04:55 AM. Emirates is said to offer optimal connectivity for customers from 40 destinations in Europe, 21 in Africa, 13 in the Middle East, as well as Brazil and Argentina, to Hangzhou via Dubai. EU probes UAE oil giant's purchase of Germany's Covestro
The European Commission yesterday announced an investigation into the takeover of German chemical firm Covestro by UAE state oil giant ADNOC, citing competition fears. "The commission has preliminary concerns that foreign subsidies granted by the United Arab Emirates could distort the EU internal market," a statement by the bloc's executive arm said. Plastics maker Covestro accepted a bid -- valuing the company at 12 billion euros ($14 billion) -- from the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company in October. The acquisition came as Germany's key chemicals sector, which makes up around five percent of the country's GDP, has been gripped by crisis. Brussels said it was investigating to see if subsidies from the UAE had allowed ADNOC to outbid competitors for the firm and would help it pump investments into Covestro that would skew the market. The commission said it would wrap up its probe and take a decision on any potential next steps by December 2. ADNOC promised to inject around 1.2 billion euros into the chemicals firm through the issuance of new shares under the terms of the takeover. Challenges facing Germany's energy-intensive chemicals industry show no signs of abating. Weak demand and high energy costs in the wake of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine have weighed on producers and led them to cut back on production in Germany. Covestro, which makes chemicals used in everything from building insulation to electric vehicles, had unveiled a savings plan ahead of the takeover announcement last year.
