Games organised with aim that players bring glory to country: Sports Minister Mandaviya on KIBG 2025
On Monday, the Beach Games, held under the ever-expanding Khelo India umbrella for the first time, were formally declared open by the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, in a colourful ceremony on the Ghoghla Beach, the venue of the Games in Diu.
While talking about the games, Mandaviya extended wishes to 1350-plus athletes participating in the competition. Mandaviya also confirmed that Diu will be developed as a destination for beach games and sports tourism.
'Beach Games 2025 was initiated on the coast of the Arabian Sea in Diu. Over 1,350 athletes are participating in the games. The games will be held in eight disciplines. The games are being organised for the second time. Looking at the organisation of this time and the last one, Diu is the best destination for beach games, and this is why the Prime Minister has decided that in the coming days, beach games will be organised in Diu. It will be developed as a destination for beach games and sports tourism,' Mandaviya told reporters.
'This is the new India under the leadership of PM Modi that not only shows dreams, but also gives opportunities to fulfil them. The games have been organised with the aim that the players bring glory to the country on a global level,' he added.
Former India cricketer and 2007 T20 World Cup hero Joginder Sharma wished the athlete well and told ANI, 'I believe these competitions will bring glory to the tricolour on an international level. I wish the athletes win the most medals.'
Former India badminton player and Commonwealth Games medalist Trupti Murgunde reflected on the 'fantastic initiative' and told ANI, 'So many states have participated, and even those, who don't have beaches around. But the enthusiasm to participate is seen. Diu is becoming the destination for beach games. This is a fantastic initiative.' (ANI)

Shubhankar Sharma needs strong second round to make cut
Copenhagen [Denmark], August 16 (ANI): Shubhankar Sharma opened his campaign at the Danish Golf Championship with an even-par 71 at the Par-71 Furesø Golf Klub, leaving him tied for 70th and in need of a strong second round to make the cut. The Indian golfer, who has not made a cut since the Indian Open in March, will be eager to turn his fortunes around and extend his week in Denmark. Veer Ahlawat carded a 2-over 73, placing him tied for 113th and facing an uphill task to progress, as per a press release from the Danish Golf Championship. Sharma began well with a birdie on the sixth but faltered with three straight bogeys from the eighth to the tenth. He recovered with birdies on the 12th, 16th, and 18th, offsetting a bogey on the 14th to finish level par. At the top of the leaderboard, England's Marco Penge produced a flawless bogey-free round of 7-under 64, setting a new course record and taking a two-shot lead. His round featured birdies on the third, sixth, 11th, 13th, and 14th holes, capped by an eagle on the 18th. Penge, who has recorded six top-30 finishes in seven starts this season, currently sits fifth in the Race to Dubai standings. Five players share second place, two shots back, including 2018 Open Champion Francesco Molinari, former Danish Golf Championship winner Rasmus Højgaard, Canadian Aaron Cockerill, Germany's Jeremy Paul, and Scotland's Marc Warren. They will most likely be able to maintain their match fitness, but achieving the batting rhythm is going to be a tough on the other hand, is still thriving in Test cricket. He was India's thirdhighest run scorer in England with 516 runs, behind Gill (754) and KL Rahul (532).
