MMEA to receive four AW189 helicopters next year, enhancing operational capabilities
MMEA acting deputy director-general (Operations) Rear Admiral Mohd Zawawi Abdullah said the procurement of two new vessels, the Multi-Purpose Mission Ship (MPMS), was also in its final stages.
"We will also receive two New Generation Patrol Vessels (NGPV) and the ex-United States Coast Guard Cutter Steadfast, which are expected to arrive in Malaysia by the end of this year once minor repairs and modifications in Baltimore, United States, have been completed.
"The MMEA continues to strengthen its operations by acquiring several Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) that can accommodate helicopters to enhance its presence at sea further and bolster maritime security in national and international waters," he said.
He said this to reporters after the closing ceremony of OP Redback 20, which was also attended by Australian Border Force (ABF) Counsellor at the Australian High Commission, Supt Brooke Leung and acting Melaka and Negeri Sembilan MMEA director, Maritime Commander Norrimi Hassan, here on Friday (May 9).
Mohd Zawawi said the asset modernisation initiative was a key component of the 2023-2033 Strategic Plan, in line with current technological advancements and asset replacement efforts to enhance operational efficiency and reduce long-term maintenance costs.
Meanwhile, he said the MMEA had arrested 17 illegal immigrants nationwide between January and April this year.
Mohd Zawawi said those detained comprised eight Indonesians and nine Myanmar nationals, aged between 15 and 60, who were caught attempting to enter or leave the country via illegal routes, including in Pengkalan Balak, Melaka; Sepang, Selangor; and Hutan Melintang, Perak.
"During the same period, 16 individuals were arrested nationwide for smuggling controlled goods like petrol and diesel, especially in Sabah waters, and 17 others were detained for trafficking contraband items such as cigarettes, liquor, and LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinders, with goods valued at over RM9.2mil seized," he said.
Meanwhile, Mohd Zawawi said efforts to combat maritime cross-border crime continued to be reinforced through Ops Redback 20, which involved strategic cooperation between the MMEA and the ABF in Melaka and Negeri Sembilan waters.
According to him, during the operation, which took place from May 5 to 9, a total of 122 inspections were conducted, involving merchant ships, local fishing vessels, passenger boats, and tugboats across an area of 2,860 square kilometres, from Kuala Sepang, Selangor, to Kuala Kesang, Johor.
"This operation is not just a bilateral cooperation but also a testament to our ongoing commitment to combating crimes such as smuggling, illegal activities, unreported and unregulated fishing, and migrant smuggling, all of which threaten the security of the country's waters," he said.
Mohd Zawawi said the annual operation, which began in 2012 under a memorandum of understanding between the Malaysian and Australian governments, has become a key platform for enhancing preparedness and the effectiveness of maritime law enforcement between the two countries. – Bernama

MMEA detects 'ghost ship' in Terengganu waters
KUANTAN: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has detected a "ghost ship" drifting in the waters near the Semangkok A oil platform in Terengganu, on Tuesday (Aug 12). Pahang MMEA director First Admiral (Maritime) Mazlan Mat Rejab said the unnamed vessel, weighing 292.9 tonnes, is believed to be linked to the incident of an oil tanker that caught fire off Tanjung Sedili on Aug 7. He said the ship was spotted about four nautical miles east of the platform, following a report received by the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) Kuantan from MRSC Johor Bahru at 4.45pm on Aug 12. "The vessel had drifted past the oil platform area and posed a potential threat to the safety of other platforms nearby. The ship is currently being towed to the Kemaman Supply Base (KSB) in Terengganu for salvage operations," he said in a statement Thursday (Aug 14). On Aug 7, the media reported that one Indonesian crew member died while four others were injured when a fire broke out onboard a foreign oil tanker, 36 nautical miles east of Tanjung Sedili Kechil, near the waters of east Johor, Kota Tinggi, on Aug 6. Mazlan said the agency would conduct a detailed inspection, including an investigation into the ship's identity and any reports of possible victims on board, once it arrives at KSB. He also said the operation received support from a Dauphin AS 365 N3 helicopter, which transported the Special Action and Rescue team, along with personnel from the Malaysia Marine Department, Malaysia Petroleum Management, PETRONAS, PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd, Vestigo Petroleum Sdn Bhd, Jadestone Energy (Malaysia) and Jasa Merin (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. "MMEA will continue the operation until the vessel is safely handed over to the Malaysia Marine Department," he added. - Bernama

'Ghost ship' spotted in Terengganu waters linked to Johor tanker blaze
KUANTAN: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has intercepted a 'ghost ship' believed to be the tanker that caught fire in the waters off eastern Johor on Aug 7. The unmanned vessel, first spotted near the Semangkok A oil rig in Terengganu on Aug 12, is now being towed to the Kemaman Supply Base (KSB) in Terengganu for salvage. Pahang MMEA director First Admiral Mazlan Mat Rejab said the Kuantan Maritime Rescue Sub Centre was alerted by its Johor counterparts about the abandoned vessel, located about four nautical miles from the oil rig, at 4.45pm on Aug 12. "The unmanned vessel had entered the oil rig's waters and risked colliding with other offshore platforms nearby. Our Special Task and Rescue (Star) team managed to board the tanker at about 6.58pm yesterday and secure it with a towline to another vessel. "The tanker is expected to berth at KSB tomorrow (Aug 15), after which a detailed inspection will be carried out to confirm its identity and determine if there are any victims on board," he said in a statement today. Mazlan said the salvage operation will continue until the vessel is safely handed over to the Marine Department. He said the agency suspects the vessel is linked to the Aug 7 incident in which an oil tanker caught fire off Tanjung Sedili, killing a 42-year-old Indonesian crew member and injuring four others. During the integrated operation, MMEA's Dauphin AS365 N3 helicopter carrying the agency's Star team was joined by personnel from the Marine Department and Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd.
