With the official commencing of the Shanghai International Motor Show today (23 April), Porsche used the Chinese showpiece to unveil a commemorative edition of the 911 South Africa will be receiving in limited numbers later this year.
Based on the 911 GTS Cabriolet, the Spirit 70 pays tribute to seven decades of the 911, and is the work of Stuttgart's Heritage Design division with production capped at 1 500 units worldwide.
No extra grunt
A departure from previous special editions often based on the coupe and the cabriolet, the Spirit 70 will exclusively feature the soft-top and derive motivation from the mild-hybrid T-Hybrid powertrain that debuted with the facelift 992.2 in May last year.

As such, the combination of the brand-new 3.6-litre turbocharged flat-six engine and a 1.9-kWh battery pack that drives a 40kW/150Nm electric motor produces an unchanged 398kW/610Nm.
Sending the amount of twist to all four wheels is the eight-speed PDK gearbox, which also houses the electric motor.
Special touches outside
Focusing mostly, therefore, on aesthetics, the Spirit 70's exterior differences from the GTS consists of 20-inch at the front and 21-inch at the rear grey-and-gold Sport Classic alloy wheels, gloss black stripes down the bonnet merging into a 911 decal, a gold 911 Spirit 70 badge on the engine cover, and gold Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur badges on the front wings.
In total, only 1 500 units will be made globally. Image: Porsche
On top of this, the engine grille cover gets a gloss black finish plus the Porsche Heritage logo, while a gloss black roundel with number 70 can be had on the doors, or deleted at the request of the buyer.
One of the unique touches is the gold 911 Spirit 70 logo on the engine cover. Image: Porsche
Completing the exterior is a black window frame to go with the black cloth roof, gold Porsche lettering with a galvanised plated surface, and a model bespoke body colour called Olive Neo.
Inside
Dynamically unchanged from the GTS, the Spirit 70's interior changes involve a new seat fabric made from textiles and finished in a black/olive neo colour called Pasha.

Set in a tartan pattern, the hue carries over to backrests of the front seats and, as an option, to the dashboard.

A gold 911 badge on the passenger's side, Pasha stitch work, embroidery badging on the centre console glovebox and the Sports Chrono package rounds the cabin off.
Price
On-sale soon, Porsche South Africa has secured an undisclosed number of Spirit 70s priced from R5 056 000, which includes a three-year/100 000 km maintenance plan as well as a matching chronograph resplendent with a Pasha pattern on the inner dial.

Xiaomi launches new YU7 SUV to battle Tesla Model Y
Xiaomi will start selling its YU7 electric vehicle in July, founder and CEO Lei Jun said on Thursday, disclosing the launch date of an SUV analysts say will be the strongest rival in China to Tesla's best-selling Model Y. The world's third-largest smartphone maker, which also makes cars, announced specifications for its second EV model alongside launches of smartphones and tablets that use its self-developed chips. Xiaomi did not disclose prices or start taking pre-orders for the YU7. In his presentation of the YU7, Lei made comparisons to Tesla's Model Y. The YU7, for example, has a driving range of up to up to 835km per charge, versus the redesigned Model Y launched in January with a range of up to 719km. "The Model Y is priced from 263,500 yuan (R655,486) and the (YU7) configurations should make the car 60,000 yuan to 70,000 yuan (R1,075,332-R1,254,560) more expensive," Lei said. "But we'll talk about the price in July." Xiaomi entered the car sector last year with its sporty EV SU7, which drew styling cues from Porsche and was priced below Tesla's Model 3. Since December, the SU7 has outsold Tesla's Model 3 in China on a monthly basis. Xiaomi's SU7 deliveries have exceeded 258,000 units since its launch, Lei said on Thursday. However, the company's new EV orders have fallen after a fatal highway crash at the end of March involving an SU7 in driving-assistance mode. Its problems have been compounded by customer complaints about false advertising. Xiaomi apologised for "not clear enough" marketing. Besides the YU7, Lei also announced a second new self-developed chip called Xring T1. The Xring O1 mobile chip, which the company announced earlier this month, matches Apple's best processor A18 on performance, he said.

Fed-up investors call for CEO Oliver Blume to drop dual Porsche-VW role
Investors called on Porsche CEO Oliver Blume, who also heads parent company Volkswagen, to drop one of his roles on Wednesday as weakness in China and tariff-related challenges in the US have forced the sports car maker to cut its outlook. Last month Porsche said its margins had plunged in the first quarter and gave a more sombre forecast for the year due to a 42% drop in sales in China in the first three months of 2025, a slowing shift to electric vehicles (EVs) and US tariffs. Blume faced frustrated investors at an annual shareholders meeting, with some criticising his decision to remain at the helm at both firms. 'Independent management of both groups is de facto not possible if one person manages both,' said Hendrik Schmidt, expert for good corporate governance at Deutsche Bank unit DWS. He said the dual role was causing discounts on Porsche's share price. Blume has in the past argued his position was a recipe for success and would not last forever. 'Give up a position on the board at last,' said Ingo Speich, head of sustainability at Deka Investment. Porsche, which at its stock market debut in 2022 had a higher valuation than Volkswagen, has fallen out of favour and its shares have dropped about 45%. Investors urged quick action in the face of Porsche's troubles in major markets China and the US. 'Porsche is in a gruelling sandwich position between the trouble spots of China and the US,' Speich said, adding the company had given no answers on how it planned to fix things in China. 'Porsche must become like its products: fast and powerful, yet safe and desirable,' DWS's Schmidt said. Speaking at the shareholder meeting, Blume acknowledged the challenges. 'Last year we had huge headwinds. Now we're experiencing a violent storm,' he said, adding the Chinese market had collapsed. 'It's clear to us: you expect more from Porsche. Of course. We do too.' The investment funds cannot influence votes at the shareholders meeting as only non-voting preference shares are traded on the stock market. Parent company VW and Porsche Automobil Holding, the holding company of the Porsche and Piech families, have control.

Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT sets SUV lap record at Yas Marina
Porsche's Cayenne Turbo GT has claimed the title of fastest production SUV around the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Behind the wheel was racing driver Ramez Azzam, who guided the performance SUV to a blistering lap time of 2:14.046 on the full 5.281km Grand Prix layout — setting a new benchmark at the Formula One venue. This wasn't just a casual run either. The time was set during an officially sanctioned session, marking the first time Yas Marina Circuit and the Emirates Motorsport Organisation have teamed up under a new format for verified production car lap records. At the heart of the Cayenne Turbo GT is the most powerful V8 in a series production Porsche road car. Paired with an eight-speed Tiptronic S gearbox, it produces 485kW and 850Nm — enough to send the SUV from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 305km/h. But raw power isn't the only story here. Porsche has thrown in serious chassis tech too: Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control with active roll stabilisation, active rear-wheel steering, and carbon-ceramic brakes — all fitted as standard. Azzam, fresh off his GT4 class win at the Dubai 24 Hours, came away impressed. 'The power and sound of the engine is impressive, but what sets the Cayenne Turbo GT apart is its braking and handling performance,' he said. 'For a car of this size to brake so late, carry so much corner speed and sit so flat is remarkable. I could push it so hard and still have confidence. It's crazy.'
