Arbeloa named manager of Real Madrid reserves
Former Spain international Alvaro Arbeloa has replaced Raul Gonzalez as manager of Real Madrid's reserve team Castilla, the LaLiga club said on Wednesday.
Arbeloa won the 2010 World Cup and two European Championship titles in 56 appearances for his country and multiple trophies at Real, including one LaLiga and two Champions League titles.
The 42-year-old retired from football in 2017, returning to Real in September 2020 to coach the under-14 side before going on to take charge of the under-19 team in 2022.
Castilla play in the Primera Federacion, the third tier of Spanish football. They finished in sixth place in the 2024-25 season and missed out on a spot in the promotion playoffs. REUTERS

Nel and Branwen Metcalfe have been named alongside Gwenllian and Alaw Pyrs in Wales coach Sean Lynn's 32-player squad who open their campaign against Scotland on August 23 in Manchester. While the Pyrs sisters have played together before, it will be a new experience for the Metcalfes, with Wales Under-20s captain Branwen yet to earn her first senior cap. "I'm lost for words," Branwen told the BBC. "It's been a whirlwind year. I haven't trained much with the squad yet, but it's been really great coming into this environment, I'm learning a lot as I go. "Everyone is really nice and it's nice to come in as a young player with all these experienced players," she added, mentioning Alex Callender and Kate Williams among her role models on the team. Sister Nel said "the family is buzzing." "People have asked, 'How do you feel?'. I couldn't be prouder," Nel told the BBC. "I've seen how hard (Branwen) has worked, she deserves this. "I would say I do look out for her (in camp) and check she's ok, but she can handle herself, everyone has been pretty welcoming." While Wales has had siblings before with the Horgan twins Clair and Louise playing together against France in 2008, having two sets of sisters from the same grassroots club is something to celebrate, said Nant Conwy Chairman Marc Jones. "Congratulations to the girls, their achievements are down to their total dedication and commitment," he said. Wales conclude the group stage with games against Canada on August 30 and Fiji on September 6. The team's best World Cup finish was fourth in 1994. The F1 car, which will be driven by Oscar Piastri or Lando Norris, is one of a trio of future chassis offered by McLaren in the December 5 sale organised by RM Sotheby's ahead of this year's season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The other two are a 2026 Arrow McLaren Indycar, to be raced at the Indianapolis 500 next May by Mexican Pato O'Ward, and McLaren's inaugural 2027 World Endurance Hypercar that will compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. McLaren Chief Executive Zak Brown said the auction would be the first time a future Formula One car had been sold before it had been unveiled to the public. The as-yet unnamed 2026 car, likely to be the MCL40 after this year's MCL39, will be the team's first for a new era in Formula One with a big change in technical and engine regulations. The successful bidder will have to wait until 2028 to take delivery, with a 2025 show car offered on lease until then to the buyer who will also have behind the scenes access to the team and events. SINGAPORE – The race to appoint a new Lions coach is heating up, with former Tottenham Hotspur assistant coach Nick Montgomery one of two candidates in town for discussions with Singapore football officials. On Aug 14, Montgomery was spotted by The Straits Times near a hotel in Beach Road. When approached, the 43-year-old said that he was in Singapore to 'visit a cousin who lives here'. When asked about his interest in the national football team head coach role, he was tightlipped, noting that 'it wouldn't be right for me to comment on that'. According to sources, Montgomery and Spanish tactician Jesus Casas, the former manager of the Iraq national team, are here this week to meet with senior officials from the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) and the Unleash the Roar! national football project. Montgomery met with them on Aug 14, while Casas will do so on Aug 15. Both managers are part of the shortlist of candidates – reported by ST in July – to replace former Lions head coach Tsutomu Ogura, who resigned on June 24 due to personal reasons. At the FAS Media day on Aug 6, deputy president Desmond Ong revealed that it had received 67 applications for the vacancy. According to sources, the shortlist now comprises Italian football icon Fabio Cannavaro, former Liverpool player Harry Kewell, Casas, Montgomery, and former Thailand coach Mano Polking, who all come from diverse elite-level playing and coaching backgrounds. Though Casas and Montgomery's presence in Singapore suggests that the duo are the front runners for the top job. Montgomery was Ange Postecoglou's assistant coach at English Premier League club Tottenham from June 2024, during which they won the Europa League for their first major trophy in 17 years. Born in Leeds, England, the Australian left the club after Postecoglou was sacked in June. PHOTO: REUTERS Before his English Premier League stint, he won the 2023 A-League championship with Australian club Central Coast Mariners. Later that year he was appointed manager of Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership but was sacked in May 2024. As a player, Montgomery was best known for his time with Sheffield United, with whom he made over 350 first-team appearances between 2000 and 2012. Casas, 51, was most recently head coach of Iraq's national team after his appointment in November 2022. In his 33 matches in charge, he won 20, drew four and lost nine. In April, the Iraqi Football Association announced Casas' dismissal with just two games remaining in Asian qualification for the 2026 World Cup. The team are still in with a chance of reaching the tournament and will play fourth round fixtures against Indonesia and Saudi Arabia in October. Casas, who will be FAS' first Spanish coach if hired, worked with several youth teams in Spain before being appointed assistant manager to Javi Gracia at English outfit Watford in early 2018. He was part of the Spanish national team's coaching staff from 2018 to 2022, working alongside La Roja head coaches Robert Moreno and Luis Enrique. While the hunt for the head coach picks up steam, for now former BG Tampines Rovers head coach Gavin Lee will serve as interim manager of the Lions for the international friendly against Malaysia on Sept 4, and back to back AFC Asian Cup qualifiers against India in October.
