March 31 is National Crayon Day — celebrate with Crayola's 'unretired' colors
Happy National Crayon Day! This creative holiday is celebrated annually on March 31, and as you might expect, it's a tribute to the beloved (but easily breakable, right?) staple of arts and craft supply closets everywhere. Crayons have been bringing joy into our lives since childhood, and Crayola decided to make things even more nostalgic this year.
The colorful history of National Crayon Day
Although the official origins of National Crayon Day are unknown, Crayola has actively participated in the holiday celebrations over the years. And why wouldn't they? The company, which was founded in 1903 with a simple lineup of 8 classic colors, has been synonymous with crayons (and creativity) for generations.
Over the years, Crayola has used this holiday to retire hues, as well as to introduce new shades. In 2017, the company officially retired the dandelion crayon, which apparently led to an outpouring of fan requests to bring it back.
Well – Dandelion lovers, rejoice – because Crayola listened. They're bringing 8 popular colors out of retirement to celebrate National Crayon Day.
For the first time in 120 years, they're reintroducing special edition boxes with 8 previously retired colors – including not one but two fun shades of yellow. The returning colors in this limited release are:
Dandelion: As mentioned, this sunny yellow hue was retired in 2017, but makes a cheerful return.
Blizzard Blue, Magic Mint, and Mulberry: These shades were retired in 2003 and are now back to inspire new creations.
Orange Red, Violet Blue, Lemon Yellow, Raw Umber: Absent since 1990, these classic colors are making a comeback after 35 years. (We're excited that we're not alone in our pining for the return of Raw Umber!)
If you've had the blues without Blizzard Blue, you can find these boxes at your usual school-supply retailers, like Michaels, Staples, and so on. They also come in colored pencils or markers but let's try to focus on crayons here people, it's their holiday!

Cincy-based ‘Dandelion' on-sale for limited Blu-ray run
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Nicole Riegel's second feature film is available to purchase on Blu-ray for a limited time. 'So much growth going from film one to film two': Nicole Riegel talks 'Dandelion' The filmmaker and Wright State University alum said Monday that her film 'Dandelion,' is receiving a limited edition slipcover Blu-ray release. 'Only 500 limiteds were made and when they're gone, they're gone,' Riegel said in an Instagram post. 'Support physical media.' The release includes the following special features: Audio commentary with Riegel and cinematographer Lauren Guiteras. A booklet of essays from the filmmakers, including Guiteras, Producer Adam Cobb, Colorist Phil Beckner, Sound Mixer/Designer Brian Berger. Deleted scenes. Behind the Scenes footage. A stills gallery. A lyric/music video for 'River.' A trailer for the film. 'Dandelion' is available for pre-order now from 'Vinegar Syndrome,' a film restoration and distribution company. "Staples rock" in Orleans, Massachusetts is the new summer attraction on Cape Cod. "A must see!"
There's an unusual new attraction on Cape Cod this summer. It's the "Staples rock," a boulder in the parking lot of the Staples store on Route 6A in Orleans, Massachusetts. It's gone viral and has become so popular it now has a marker on Google Maps. Here are some of the reviews on Google: "I get misty every time I visit. A must see!" "Came for the printer ink, stayed for the monolithic geologic specimen in the parking lot." The Staples rock story So how did the big rock get there? The "Staples rock" on Route 6A in Orleans, Massachusetts. CBS Boston "I think we should bring an archeologist here to find out the true history of the Staples Rock," said visitor Anne Marie Leone. Coincidentally, geologist Katie Castagno was visiting at the same time. "It felt like it was under the cover of nightfall. All of a sudden, there's this huge rock in the parking lot," said Castagno. "This rock was deposited by glaciers about 15,000 to 20,000 years ago," she said. When that ice sheet melted, she said it dropped boulders like this. "The actual source of the rock is a little bit harder to tell. It will really depend on where the glaciers picked up the rock," Castagno said. The property manager finally helped solve the mystery. She said it was unearthed during sewer work in the parking lot. Then, last year, a driver crashed a car through the wall of the Staples. No one was hurt. But, as a joke, someone suggested the rock stay in the parking lot to protect the building. And the rest is history. "Better than the Plymouth Rock for sure," said visitor Anna Bassett.
