Cops recover stolen Genting casino chips worth RM2mil
KUANTAN : Police have recovered 200 casino chips worth RM2 million, part of a larger haul of 300 chips stolen from Genting Highlands in Bentong on Aug 2.
Pahang police chief Yahaya Othman said a man came forward to hand over the casino chips following a media report on the matter on Friday.
He had bought the chips, each valued at RM10,000, from the suspect, who was involved in a casino junket.
'The man, who was also involved in a junket at the casino, purchased the 200 chips from the suspect at the Genting Grand lobby on Aug 2 without any written agreement,' Yahaya said at a press conference here today.
He said that police, in cooperation with Interpol, were tracking down the suspect, who had fled the country with the remaining 100 chips worth RM1 million.
Yahaya said CCTV footage showed the suspect taking the chips and leaving the casino before heading to KLIA the same day.
The case is being investigated under Section 408 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust.
Earlier, police received a report from a 32-year-old junket company manager who said the casino chips had been taken from a closed casino room at the Genting resort.

Corrupt cops exist, we won't sweep it under the rug, Ayob vows
KUALA LUMPUR: The police will not cover up corruption within its ranks, says Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay. He said he did not deny corruption existed in the force, adding that many officers had been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the police's Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS). "We will act against anyone involved in corruption regardless of their rank or position," he said after the launch of a book titled "Antologi Puisi Makan Suap" at Wisma Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka last night. "From the top to the bottom, if you are corrupt, we will act against you. Corruption tarnishes the police's image." Ayob said most police officers carried out their duties with integrity, but there was a handful who were corrupt. He added that his record spoke for itself, having overseen the arrest of 24 police personnel during his time as Johor police chief, 14 of whom were sacked from the force. While serving as the Narcotic Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director, Ayob said action was also taken against a superintendent, a deputy superintendent, two assistant superintendents, and an inspector who were all dismissed from the force. "I will not compromise with corruption," he said, adding that if a corruption case were discovered, he would hand the case to the MACC before taking other measures, including opening investigation papers and taking disciplinary action. Earlier in his speech, Ayob said there were those who claimed it was hard to stamp out corruption in the force, though this would not stop him from trying. "The era of rhetoric has passed. The public is watching our every move, our lifestyles, what we own." At the event, Ayob received a "Tokoh Integriti PEMUISI Malaysia" award for his efforts to eradicate corruption in the police.

Zara Qairina case: Bukit Aman team to record statements from three senior police officers

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the department has opened a disciplinary investigation paper (KST) against the district police chief, holding the rank of Superintendent; the district criminal investigation division chief, with the rank of ASP; and an investigating officer, with the rank of Inspector. They are suspected of non-compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) during the investigation into the case. 'The Bukit Aman JIPS officers will travel there within a day or two to record statements from these three officers. The investigation concerns non-compliance with SOPs in the Zara Qairina case and the supervision of investigating officers,' he said. He said this to reporters after the launch of the book 'Antologi Puisi Makan Suap' at the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, last night. Ayob Khan said strict action would be taken against any investigating officers and supervisors found to have violated the investigation SOPs. Ayob Khan said that, so far, the three senior officers involved are continuing to carry out their duties as usual. Last Wednesday, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar, at a press conference, said that the initial findings of the Bukit Aman Special Task Force investigation found elements of non-compliance with investigation procedures during the early probe into the death of Zara Qairina. Zara Qairina, 13, was confirmed dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, on July 17, after being found unconscious in a drain near the dormitory of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha, in Papar, at about 4 am on July 16. – Bernama
