World's largest airport terminal leaves pilot floored as he shares reality inside
A commercial pilot was left stunned when he visited a massive £13.4bn airport terminal. Beijing Daxing International Airport opened its doors in 2019 to help alleviate the number of passengers using the city's primary airport.
The huge 2,679-hectare (6,620-acre) airport features four runways for commercial flights as well as one for military aircraft. It has become known as "the starfish" due to its shape.
Travel vlogger Stefan Drury shared his astonishment upon exploring what is recognised as the world's largest airport terminal. In his video, he remarked: "I've been here once before and the security is extreme to say the least.
"There's security guards out in the taxi area, there's a security check to actually get into the airport, not to get into the secure section, but to actually access the airport. It's a highly protected and very secure environment, which is great for aviation."
Despite the grandeur of the terminal, Stefan was struck by the sparse number of passengers inside. Designed to handle between 120 to 200 million travellers annually, it aims to surpass Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia, as the busiest airport globally.
Stefan commented on the quietness of the shopping area after entering, saying: "Some of them [the shops] don't seem very open and it also doesn't seem very busy.
"I don't know if that's just the day that I'm here, or not as many people are still using this airport, whether people are still using Beijing's other airport, Beijing Capital."
He found the lack of crowds surprising: "This is actually a bit bizarre now to be honest, that there are so few people actually here. I know this is an airport that is being developed for the future and not every airline is operating out of here at the moment and Beijing Capital is obviously a bigger airport and more popular airport and because of its location a lot more people use it, but still for an airport that's been open since 2019, it does seem to be very, very empty."
Stefan was taken aback upon discovering a serene Chinese garden within the terminal, continuing: "This is a first, I don't think I've ever seen something like this inside the security controlled area of an international airport before.
"What a very cool place just to come and chill out before a flight, get a little bit of peace and quiet and get out from the stuffy air-conditioning inside and come and hang with the fish. This is really nice, very peaceful, and there's not many people here either."
In conclusion, Stefan was thoroughly impressed by the new Chinese airport: "I have to say I'm wildly impressed by the design of this airport.
"We're traditionally used to having those rectangular boxes, which are divided up into multiple terminals, so it's nice to see a brand new airport like this one here in Beijing that is purpose built for the expansion that is expected to see down the line into the future."

The best curry in England in 2025
What's your curry order? Do you prefer a cool korma, or a spicy vindaloo? According to YouGov, Indian is the nation's second favourite takeaway (behind Chinese), so whatever your spice tolerance chances are you love a good curry now and again. There are great Indian restaurants up and down the country, but where is the very best? Enter: The English Curry Awards. Run by Oceanic Awards, the annual competition exists to 'celebrate the rich tapestry of flavours that the curry industry brings to the English culinary landscape', and was held on August 11 in Birmingham. It recognises the best places in each English region, as well as one overall national champion. The competition is fierce, and the food is delicious, but only one may come away with the trophy. This year, the top prize went to Sherkhan of Alnwick, a locally beloved restaurant and take-away in Northumberland which was also named, naturally, best in the northeast. This isn't a first for Sherkhan – it also won the awards' 'best restaurant in England' prize back in 2022. In 2024 is was shortlisted for the regional award but narrowly missed out, so it's especially exciting to see Sherkhan return to form this year. After the ceremony, the team at Sherkhan announced their success on Facebook saying 'We have done it AGAIN!!... This award is for all our lovely customers from Northumberland and throughout the whole of the country.' With a near five-star rating on TripAdvisor, customer reviews often mention the quality of both the food and service. One recent review described receiving an 'extremely friendly reception' and another declared that they could 'can safely say it's been the best curry we have had in Northumberland over the last 4 years'. Elsewhere, Lavang in Solihull was named the best curry house in the West Midlands. Describing itself as a 'culinary haven of South East Asian cuisine', it has a perfect rating on TripAdvisor, and, according to recent visitors 'amazing food'. In the southwest Mattancherry claimed the trophy from the market town of Taunton, and the Bengal Lounge, which specialises in seafood, was crowned for Yorkshire and the Humber. Here's the full list of regional and city winners from the 2025 English Curry Awards: North West: Aroma Asian Restaurant, Burnley North East: Sher Khan, Alnwick Yorkshire and the Humber: Bengal Lounge, Wetherby East Midlands: Khandan Restaurant, Wellingborough West Midlands: Lavang, Solihull) Midlands: Everest Lounge, Market Harborough East of England: Spice Valley, Norwich South East: Spice Route, Andover South West: Mattancherry, Taunton City awards Newcastle: Sanskrit Newcastle Manchester: Spice n Spirits Leeds: Delhi Wala Food Liverpool: Da Mount Gurkha Sheffield: Prithiraj Nottingham: Anoki Restaurant Birmingham: Titash Southampton: Padharo Indian Restaurant London: Masala Inn The best beer in Britain has been crowned for 2025.

American in UK tries fish and chips but is told they've 'made a mistake'
Sarah Renee, an American who moved to the UK, frequently shares her thoughts on British foods and various UK brands. In her most recent review, she chose to sample the classic dish of fish and chips. Fish and chips, an iconic British dish adored by millions, is a staple in school canteens every Friday and countless shops across the nation specialise in this beloved classic. It seems our friends across the pond are also keen to sample this national treasure, including Sarah Renee, an American expat now living in the UK. Known for her TikTok reviews of British food and popular UK brands like Greggs, SpudBros and Toby Carvery, Sarah recently went on a five-hour journey to Bournemouth to taste the seaside town's famed fish and chips, comparing it to the fare back home in Orange County, Southern California. At Harry Ramsden's, she ordered a large cod with a regular portion of chips, gravy, mushy peas and curry sauce. Firstly, she took a bite of the fish, describing the flavour as "incredible" before dipping some into the gravy, mistakenly thinking it was meant for the fish and not just the chips. Finding the combination "unique", she then sampled the curry sauce with the fish, confessing: "I've never heard of curry and fish and chips but I'm gonna try it anyway." Deciding she preferred the fish with curry sauce over gravy, she next tried a chip dunked in gravy, declaring: "That's much better than the one at the Chinese." Wrapping up her review, Sarah enthused: "Okay this tastes nothing like California fish and chips so this is fantastic. "I'm giving Harry Ramsden a ten out of ten. This is phenomenal." Harry Ramsden's, a renowned fast food chain in the UK, is famed for its fish and chips. Its Bournemouth branch, situated on the seafront, boasts seating for up to 420 diners. While the restaurant 's signature dish is fish and chips, it also offers a variety of other options, including wholetail scampi, a selection of beef, chicken, cod or halloumi burgers and a classic caesar salad. Sarah's TikTok video has sparked more than 1,900 comments, with several viewers suggesting she should have avoided Harry Ramsden's. A local from Bournemouth commented: "I'm from Bournemouth, this is the worst fish and chips you can get. It's a chain restaurant, so many better places to go, always go local. Total tourist trap." Another viewer agreed: "Harry Ramsden's is a chain though, it's even better from an independent chippy." A third chimed in: "I hate to tell you this but Harry Ramsden's is the worst fish and chips going, it's a chain. Try Lakeside in Poole, if you're still in the area! It's the best." A fourth remarked: "Harry Ramsden's is not the best way to try British fish and chips as they're a chain." However, one Harry Ramsden's fan defended the chain: "I went to the exact same restaurant twice a couple of weeks ago because it was sooo good."
