Arab League: Baghdad Summit expected decisions reflecting responses to crises

Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League, Hossam Zaki, affirmed on Monday that the resumption of the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit in Baghdad is extremely important, and its topics are equally important and political.
"Baghdad will host two summits simultaneously, one political and the other developmental. We expect the issuance of decisions that reflect a real response to the crises," Zaki told the Iraqi News Agency - INA.
He noted, "The upcoming summit meeting of the Arab League Council on May 17th is being held under exceptional Arab, regional, and international circumstances, which require the issuance of decisions that reflect a real response to the crises."
"These circumstances require the summit to make decisions of a special nature. We expect to reach decisions that will truly meet public expectations. The Development Summit is being held in its fifth session. The first session was held in Kuwait, and the last session was held in Lebanon in 2019. After that, it was only held in Baghdad. Therefore, Baghdad is hosting two summits simultaneously," he explained.
He added that "the Development Summit is dedicated to economic and social issues, which are no less important than the political issues that will be discussed at the meeting of leaders, kings, and presidents. The development summit includes extremely important issues that must be focused on."
Zaki concluded by saying, "We are pleased that the Development Summit is being held and is returning to Baghdad. This is an excellent thing, and we congratulate Iraq for hosting it."
Earlier today, a meeting of the Economic and Social Council was held in Baghdad at the senior officials level.
This is a preparatory meeting for the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit, scheduled to be held after the Arab League Council meeting at the summit level, with the attendance of Arab leaders, kings, and presidents.

Separately, the Health Ministry cautioned that continued evacuation orders threaten to shut down Nasser Medical Complex, the only facility in southern Gaza offering specialized care. Government advisor: Iraq is working to establish an artificial intelligence data center to serve Arab countries
The Prime Minister's Advisor for Artificial Intelligence Affairs, Diaa al-Jumaili, announced on Tuesday the start of organizational procedures to open the headquarters of the Artificial Intelligence Center in Baghdad, while noting that Iraq will work to establish an artificial intelligence project that serves the Arab countries. Al-Jumaili told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "The Arab Center for Artificial Intelligence, which is similar to the Arab Union for Artificial Intelligence, will be based in Baghdad, because the start of artificial intelligence started from here 1,200 years ago through algorithms, logic and algebra." He added that 'the first step that was taken was the approval of the Prime Minister, Mohammed Shi'a Al-Soudani, along with the approval of the Arab Summit that was recently held in Baghdad, that the center of artificial intelligence will be in the capital,' noting that 'organizational procedures have begun, and the first of these steps was the approval of the project.' 'There were several previous opportunities for other countries to host the center during the past five decades, but the circumstances that Iraq went through, especially the wars, prevented this,' he said, pointing out that 'the technical and organizational aspect has already started, and there is a meeting soon with the Prime Minister to complete the deliberations, because Iraq will be obligated to lay the foundations for the center.' "Iraq has a large number of engineers and professors specialized in the philosophy of artificial intelligence," he said, stressing "the need for advanced data centers and a strong communications network." "Iraq will now work with Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Egypt to take advantage of the technology available to them, in addition to utilizing Iraqi skills to create a project that serves Arab countries, especially in the Arabic language," he said. 'The future success of artificial intelligence in the Arab world depends on Arabic , which contains more than 12 million and 500,000 vocabulary, compared to English, in which artificial intelligence relies on only about 6,500 vocabulary,' he said, pointing out that 'the humanization of the machine will be through Arabic poetry, and Iraq has a long history in this field, because it is the cradle of two large linguistic schools, Kufa and Basra.' "Without the algorithms that originated in Baghdad, there would have been no industrial revolution or sciences such as engineering, philosophy and artificial intelligence," he said, noting that "Iraq's steps are correct, and we need technology and skills."

UK's Agrium Capital to Build Infant Formula Plant in Iraq

The Iraq Development Fund has reportedly signed a memorandum of understanding with British firm Agrium Capital to establish Iraq's first modern infant formula production facility, with a planned capital expenditure exceeding $200 million. The plant, which will use locally sourced ingredients including Iraqi milk, is expected to meet 85 percent of the domestic market's demand, reducing Iraq's reliance on imports and enabling improved quality oversight. State-run Iraqi News Agency (INA) quotes Agrium Capital Managing Director, Rod Bassett, as saying that the company operates globally with around 3,000 employees and is now focusing on food security and renewable energy. He emphasised Iraq's strategic importance and noted the company's 15-year presence in the Iraqi market.
