Political Secretary to Luyang Assemblyman Chan Loong Wei, issued a statement confirming that SE had successfully identified the root cause of the disruption, which was traced to a faulty underground line. 'The repair work to replace the cable was completed on the same day. 'We understand the inconvenience this has caused and I would like to extend our deepest appreciation to the residents and shop owners in Foh Sang for their patience and understanding during this period,' he said in a statement on Friday. To minimise disruptions during the outage, SE had deployed two generator sets (gensets) to power the commercial area in Foh Sang, providing temporary relief to affected businesses. Chan also provided an update on SESB's long-term efforts to enhance power reliability in Luyang. 'The construction of the Luyang 33/11kV Main Distribution Substation (PPU), located near Dewan Foo Chow, is progressing on schedule and is expected to be completed by September. 'Once operational, this facility will play a key role in stabilising electricity supply throughout the Luyang area,' he said. In addition, Luyang is set to benefit from another major infrastructure upgrade — the upcoming 33/11kV PPU Lido substation near Bukit Kopungit. Chan emphasised that the project, also spearheaded through the initiatives of Luyang Assemblyman Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, is expected to further strengthen the local power grid and improve supply resilience. 'The Luyang Assemblyman's Office, together with SE, remains committed to improving infrastructure to support our growing communities and businesses,' he said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Mainstream media still trusted for accurate, in-depth reports, says Alice Lau
Lau (seated fifth left) is seen with SJA members and guests at the event. SIBU (June 10): Social media may be the common mode used to share news but mainstream media such as newspapers and television stations are still trusted for providing accurate and in-depth reports, said Alice Lau. The Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker said journalists are trained to seek the truth, verify facts, as well as present fair and balanced reports to the public. 'They are not just sharing messages but are truth-seekers and truth-tellers, helping our society make sense of complex issues,' she said at the Sibu Journalists Association (SJA) installation and Gawai celebration last night. The Lanang MP said in today's digital era, social media and online platforms have enabled information to travel faster than ever. While this is convenient, she pointed out there are also challenges as misinformation and fake news can spread rapidly, especially through unverified sources. 'Nowadays, anyone can post content, information, or news on platforms like Facebook, WeChat, TikTok, or Instagram. But that doesn't make everyone a journalist. As more people turn to social media and 'self-media', journalists also need to keep up. 'This doesn't mean just blindly following the latest trends, but rather strengthening their professional skills, using new tools wisely, and staying true to their mission,' she said. Lau pointed out that while most people can cook, not everyone can become a master chef. She also shared that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had announced an additional RM1 million this year for the Tabung Kasih @ Hawana. The fund, set up in April 2023, helps media professionals facing health challenges or in urgent need of support. 'This shows that the Madani government truly appreciates the hard work and contributions of journalists in our country,' added Lau. To date, 405 media members have received aid from Tabung Kasih @ Hawana. Among those attending the SJA event were Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh; Sibu MP Oscar Ling; Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng; Joshua Ting – a political secretary to the Premier, who represented Dudong assemblyman Dato Sri Tiong King Sing; and SJA chairperson Florence Nervyn. Ukraine's drone attacks temporarily halt flights in Moscow, across Russia
(Reuters) -Ukraine's overnight drone strikes have forced a temporary suspension of flights in all airports serving Moscow and the country's second-largest city St. Petersburg, but caused no damage, Russian officials reported on Tuesday. Russian air defence units destroyed a total of 102 Ukrainian drones overnight, the Russian defence ministry - which reports only how many were downed, not the number Ukraine launched - said on the Telegram messaging app. Nearly half of the drones were destroyed over the Bryansk region that borders Ukraine, the ministry said. Three drones were downed over the Moscow region and two over the Leningrad region, of which St. Petersburg is the regional capital. Russia's civil aviation authority Rosaviatsia temporarily halted flights at all four major airports serving Moscow and St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Airport, as well as at airports in nine other cities to ensure safety, it said on Telegram. Flights in Moscow and some other cities were restored by Tuesday morning, but restrictions were still in place in St. Petersburg at 0430 GMT. Regional governors, who wrote about the attacks on Telegram, did not report any damage caused by the attacks. (Reporting by Lidia Kelly in Melbourne; Editing by Chris Reese and Saad Sayeed)
