Proven In-Car Entertainment Solution Delivers Immersive Media Experiences and Transforms New Kia Models into "Living Spaces on Wheels"
SEOUL, South Korea, July 16, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- LG Electronics (LG), a leading innovator in mobility technology, announced that its webOS-based Automotive Content Platform (ACP) will power in-car streaming for Kia Corporation's new European models. Debuting on the recently introduced EV3, the platform will also be extended to the upcoming EV4, EV5 and New Sportage. This marks an expansion of LG's innovative in-car experience to the European market, following successful deployments in Korea.
LG's ACP runs on the powerful and versatile webOS platform, which already powers over 240 million LG Smart TVs worldwide. As a core component of "LG AlphaWare," the company's comprehensive software-defined vehicle (SDV) solution suite, the ACP redefines the car as a true "living space on wheels." The platform allows passengers to stream their favorite content directly on the vehicle's infotainment display, * delivering an experience comparable to that of a smartphone or smart TV – while adhering to driving safety regulations.
Kia's European model lineup will offer a diverse in-car entertainment experience, featuring popular content from platforms including Netflix, Disney+, YouTube, LG Channels, Baby Shark World for Kids, Stingray Karaoke, Play.Works, Haystack News and Vasari. Later this year, the content library will expand to include Rakuten TV, Napster, and German OTT service Joyn. Available only when parked, these video streaming services let occupants turn the car into a private cinema – further enhancing the in-car media ecosystem.
"By bringing the webOS Automotive Content Platform to Kia's European model lineup, we are making it easy for people to enjoy their favorite content wherever they go," said Eun Seok-hyun, president of the LG Vehicle Solution Company. Final week of US-Korea trade talks sees shipbuilding as key

Seoul is racing to finalize a tariff deal with Washington before the Aug. 1 deadline, as Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol prepares to meet US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Thursday in a bid to avert a 25 percent tariff on Korean exports, including autos. According to the industry and government sources on Sunday, the meeting between Koo and Bessent has been rescheduled for Thursday, likely at the US Treasury Department. Their meeting was initially planned for Friday with Korea's Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, but was postponed by the US side. Korea's industry and trade chiefs, who are currently visiting the US, will remain there to continue last-minute high-level negotiations. To their US counterparts, they have outlined plans for cooperation in key strategic manufacturing sectors such as semiconductors, shipbuilding and batteries, while strongly urging tariff reductions on items such as automobiles. The Korean government has presented a revised proposal that includes sensitive agricultural and livestock products, going further than its initial offer to address US concerns. Washington, however, is reportedly pressuring Seoul for greater concessions. The tight schedule remains a major hurdle. The US is to hold trade talks with the European Union on Sunday, and is set to conduct high-level trade meetings with China on Monday and Tuesday, leaving only Wednesday and Thursday available for negotiations with Korea. Last week, Japan secured a reduction in tariffs on its auto exports to the US, with rates falling from 27.5 percent to 15 percent, after offering a $550 billion investment package. The deal has increased pressure on Korea, whose auto industry still faces the full 25 percent tariff. As Japan, Korea's key rival in the sector, gains an upper hand, Seoul is reportedly preparing a $100 billion package, along with additional commitments, to remain competitive Given that the US' ultimate goal is to revive its manufacturing sector, Seoul is focusing on leveraging industrial cooperation, particularly in the shipbuilding sector, where Korea holds a competitive edge. 'We confirmed the US has a strong interest in shipbuilding and agreed to work on mutually acceptable solutions, including bilateral cooperation in the sector," Korea's presidential office said Saturday. Trump has repeatedly stressed the importance of strengthening the US' shipbuilding industry and issued an executive order in April aimed at revitalizing the sector and curbing China's maritime dominance. Experts warn that the US tariffs, if maintained at the threatening 25 percent level, are expected to hit Korea's manufacturing sector the hardest. It accounts for 27.6 percent of Korea's economy — well above the OECD average — and exports make up 44 percent of the nation's gross domestic product. The US auto tariffs have already impacted Korea's leading automakers. Hyundai Motor and Kia both reported weaker earnings in the April-June period: Kia's operating profit plunged 24.1 percent, while Hyundai's figure dropped 15.8 percent. The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy has warned that Korea's real GDP could shrink by up to 0.4 percent if the US tariffs are implemented as initially planned. 'If the US' 'reciprocal' tariffs of 25 percent take place, Korea's real GDP can decrease by 0.3-0.4 percent even after the economy stabilizes," the institute said in a public hearing in June. With Japan recently securing a tariff reduction to 15 percent, Korea's growth prospects are expected to worsen under a higher rate, given that the two countries have similar export portfolios to the US. Korea's already stagnant growth outlook — currently projected at below 1 percent — would also likely face a further downgrade if the 25 percent reciprocal tariff is imposed. According to the Bank of Korea on July 24, the country's growth rate is likely to remain around the May forecast of 0.8 percent, in the case that the tariff rate is lowered to 15 percent, similar to Japan's. The rate could fall to zero if the tariff is set at 25 percent. US President Donald Trump said that his administration will have most of its trade deals with countries finished by Aug. 1. The president also said his administration might send letters to close to 200 countries informing them of their tariff rate, which he said means, "They have a deal. It's done."

Kia sets new sales record in India for H1

Korea's second-largest automaker Kia posted record sales in India during the first half of 2025, bolstered by the launch of its new Syros sport utility vehicle. According to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, Kia sold 142,139 units in India between January and June, surpassing its previous first-half sales record of 136,108 units — set in 2023 — by 4.4 percent. The performance marks a rebound from last year's decline and puts the firm nearly halfway toward its full-year target of 300,000 units in the world's third-largest auto market. Kia's market share also rose to 6.4 percent, up 0.6 percentage points from a year earlier, placing it sixth in the country's private vehicle market. After experiencing a decline in sales in 2024, the launch of the Syros SUV played a key role in reversing the trend. Tailored for India's dense urban environments and narrow roads, the compact SUV recorded 24,371 units sold in the first half of 2025, following Kia's consistently strong-selling models — the Sonet SUV, the Seltos SUV and the Carens multi-purpose vehicle, which sold 45,277, 36,883 and 34,056 units, respectively. The Syros also contributed to the brand's 9.5 percent year-on-year growth in the Indian market during the second quarter. Stepping up its new model rollout, Kia launched the all-electric Carens Clavis in July. The segment is intensifying in competition, driven by challenges from local producers and the recent arrival of Tesla. Kia has also been expanding its local production capacity and partnering with the Indian Institute of Technology, India's premier network of technology institutes, to accelerate innovation and develop products tailored to the local market. All Kia models sold in India, except for the imported EV6 and EV9 SUVs, are produced at the company's manufacturing plant in Andhra Pradesh, southern India. Since production began in 2019, the facility had produced 1,482,490 units as of the first quarter of 2025, having surpassed the 1-million-unit milestone in 2023.

Samsung, LG tighten grip on high-end OLED market with iPhone 17 supply

High yields, vast IP give Korean display makers decisive edge over Chinese rivals South Korea's top display makers Samsung Display and LG Display are cementing their dominance in the high-end OLED market by becoming the only firms to supply Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 lineup with next-generation low-power panels known as low-temperature polycrystalline oxide OLEDs. According to industry sources Friday, Apple is set to adopt LTPO panels across the new iPhone 17 series, a move that further sidelines Chinese competitors like BOE, which continues to struggle with mass production due to low yields and technological hurdles. LTPO OLEDs, known for reducing power consumption by 15 to 20 percent compared to traditional low-temperature polycrystalline silicon or LTPS OLEDs, have become the gold standard for premium smartphones. Originally developed by Apple in 2014, the technology gained traction only in recent years due to complex manufacturing and high costs. It is now widely used in top-tier models like Samsung's Galaxy Ultra and Apple's iPhone Pro. Samsung and LG's exclusive supply to Apple — the world's largest smartphone maker — highlights their technological edge over Chinese rivals in the lucrative high-end display sector. In the first quarter of this year, the two Korean firms controlled a combined 71.8 percent of the LTPO OLED market, according to Omdia. In contrast, Chinese players, including BOE, TCL CSOT and Visionox, collectively held just 27.8 percent. 'BOE is far from catching up,' said an industry official on condition of anonymity. 'The technical and yield barriers for LTPO remain high, and Korean firms have already built a commanding lead.' Samsung and LG are also ahead in intellectual property. As of 2022, LG held 649 LTPO OLED-related patents and Samsung 376 — significantly outpacing BOE (373), TCL (106) and Tianma (99), across jurisdictions including the US, China and Korea. Looking ahead, Apple is expected to adopt LTPO3, the next-generation iteration of the technology, as early as 2027. Korean firms are already ramping up R&D in anticipation, aiming to widen the performance gap with Chinese competitors. Beyond LTPO, both Samsung and LG are spearheading innovation in other next-generation display formats. Samsung recently unveiled an electroluminescent quantum dot display with an industry-high 4,000-nit peak brightness, while LG introduced its fourth-generation OLED technology, setting a new benchmark in brightness performance. Both companies are also accelerating development in emerging fields such as OLED on silicon for XR and VR devices, as well as rollable and flexible displays, the markets where Chinese manufacturers have yet to gain meaningful traction.
