Nicole Kidman To Be Honoured With Women In Motion Award At Cannes 2025

NDTV01-05-2025

Washington:
The Cannes Film Festival and Kering have announced that Nicole Kidman will be the 10th recipient of the Women in Motion Award. This prestigious honour recognises female artists who advance the place of women in cinema and society.
The award ceremony will take place on May 18 during a glamorous gala at the festival, confirmed The Hollywood Reporter.
Kidman's commitment to working with female directors has been cited as a reason for her selection.
In 2017, she pledged to work with a female director every 18 months, but has since exceeded that goal, collaborating with nearly 20 female directors.
This commitment to promoting female representation in cinema has made her a powerful example of what Women in Motion have been advocating for over the past decade, as per The Hollywood Reporter.
Kering chairman and CEO Francois-Henri Pinault praised Kidman.
They said, "Through her artistic standards, her committed choices and her concrete action to change representations in cinema, she is a powerful illustration of what Women In Motion have been defending for a decade," as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter.
Kidman expressed her gratitude, calling it a "true honour" to receive the award.
Kidman joins a roster of esteemed honorees, including Donna Langley, Jane Fonda, Patty Jenkins, Geena Davis, Susan Sarandon, Viola Davis, Michelle Yeoh, and Salma Hayek Pinault.
Meanwhile, Kidman is set to star in a new season of Nine Perfect Strangers on Hulu, a series where she is an executive producer.
She also has upcoming projects, including Margo's Got Money Troubles opposite Elle Fanning and Scarpetta opposite Jamie Lee Curtis.

Audience chatter, phone use ruin experience: Why Martin Scorsese stopped going to theatres

Noted filmmaker Martin Scorsese has stopped going to the theatres. After directing over 20 films, the revered director has shared that he has not been able to concentrate at the theatres as he is too angered and distracted by the conversations and smartphone activity around him. The 82-year-old director, who last helmed Killers of the Flower Moon, spoke about this in conversation with US film critic Peter Travers for his blog The Travers Take. "I asked the maestro why he doesn't see movies in theatres any more and he went all raging bull about audiences who babble on phones during the movie, leave to order snacks and vats of soda, and keep up a noise level loud enough to drown out the actors," Travers wrote. When he pointed out that as kids, they too would have had loud conversations in theatres, Scorsese said, "Yeah, maybe. But when we talked it was always about the movie and the fun we had chewing over the details." Up next, Scorsese has multiple projects in the works including a crime drama, starring Dwayne Johnson in lead and set in Hawaii. He also has a Pope Francis documentary in development. The leader of the Catholic Church was 88 when he passed away on April 21. He had recently served as an executive producer on Neeraj Ghaywan's sophomore feature Homebound, starring Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor. The film made its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and received critical acclaim with a nine-minute standing ovation.

Mindy Kaling explains her on-screen absence: 'I'm superstitious, but I'm coming back'

If you've been missing Mindy Kaling on your screens lately, you're not alone—and according to Kaling herself, she's been feeling the absence too. The actress recently spoke publicly about stepping away from acting after a frank discussion with The Hollywood Reporter for the Paley Media Council Series on Thursday, June 5. Now 45 and mother to three, Kaling embarks on a new chapter—both in her life and career—while remaining deeply invested in the tales she brings to the screen. Fans of Never Have I Ever have been wondering for years why the co-creator ever declined to make a cameo on the series, particularly since it's based on her very own cultural background as an Indian American raised in Southern California. Kaling finally delivered an explanation that's half practical—and half superstition. A show literally about an Indian American family in Southern California, and if I wasn't on that—what's wrong with me?" she said. "I think there is a part of me that feels a little superstitious. I'm like, 'these seem to have gone well and I'm not in them so maybe I'll wait.'" Kaling explained she's already considering hanging it up in front of the camera, and possibly doing so while sitting in the director's chair as well. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "I would love to do that again," she said of directing and acting at the same time. "That's the thing that maybe in the next couple of years, when I release a couple of other things that are further up the pipeline, that would be something that would be enjoyable to do again. It's apparent that Kaling hasn't lost her passion for acting—she's just patiently waiting for the right time and right project. And although her superstition might have had her off-screen for some time, fans can be certain that her comeback is imminent.
