Panthers sign QB Bryce Perkins; TE Tyler Mabry to IR
August 18 - The Carolina Panthers signed quarterback Bryce Perkins and placed tight end Tyler Mabry on injured reserve on Monday. Perkins, 28, adds depth behind starter Bryce Young as veteran Andy Dalton deals with a right elbow injury. Perkins made his only NFL appearances with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022, completing 19 of 34 passes for 161 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in five games (one start). He rushed 19 times for 90 yards. Perkins played for the United Football League's Michigan Panthers for the past two seasons and was named the league's MVP and Offensive Player of the Year in 2025. The Panthers also have second-year pro Jack Plummer, who has completed 16 of 24 passes for 162 yards and two interceptions while appearing in both Carolina exhibitions. The former Louisville quarterback has yet to play in a regular-season game. Mabry, 28, is out with a hamstring injury. He has one catch for 7 yards in 10 career NFL games with the Seattle Seahawks (2021-22, 2024). The Panthers wrap up the preseason Thursday at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers. They open the regular season Sept. 7 at Jacksonville. --Field Level Media

Aaron Pico speaks out after brutal spinning elbow loss to Lerone Murphy at UFC 319
Aaron Pico has released a statement after his UFC debut ended in defeat on Saturday, as Lerone Murphy knocked him out with a brutal spinning back elbow. UFC 319 saw Pico, 28, take his next career step after making his name in Bellator, but after showing promising signs in the early minutes, he was on the wrong end of a knockout of the year contender. In fact, Murphy's highlight-reel KO of the American was the second straight spinning back elbow knockout of the night, remarkably. In the previous fight, Carlos Prates beat Geoff Neal by the same means. Prates's strike came in the final second of the first round, dropped and badly hurt Neal, and was immediately touted as a contender for knockout of the year. Then, Murphy produced the same shot but put his opponent out cold, yet he added a hammer fist for good measure. The Briton, 34, might have established himself as the No 1 contender to featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski in the process. Meanwhile, Pico must go back to the drawing board. 'Last night wasn't my night, that's the fight game,' Pico wrote on Instagram. 'I'm grateful for my team, my family, and everyone who continues to support me. 'The supporters that have been there from day one and my new supporters, I see you! Thank you. Wins and losses both teach lessons and I'll come back sharper, stronger, and better prepared. 'Thank you all who have sent messages and checked in, my health is well. Thanks for riding with me. My story is not over.' Although Pico was making his UFC debut, he believed that a win over Murphy might have skyrocketed him up the rankings, potentially earning him a shot at Volkanovski. Now, however, attention turns to the potential of a Murphy vs Volkanovski fight, with the latter having reclaimed the featherweight belt in April. Volkanovski's decision win over Diego Lopes saw the Australian claim the vacant title, after Ilia Topuria relinquished it and moved up to lightweight, where he won a second belt. Volkanovski's previous fight was in fact a knockout loss to Topuria, as the latter won the title, which he then defended just once before giving it up. In the main event of UFC 319 on Saturday (16 August), Pico's teammate Khamzat Chimaev dominated Dricus Du Plessis to win the middleweight title, claiming a decision win.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino condemns 'unacceptable' racism after incidents at German Cup games
FIFA President Gianni Infantino says that two incidents of alleged racist abuse which marred German Cup games are 'unacceptable' as German police investigate. Infantino's comments came a day after Schalke 's Christopher Antwi-Adjei said he was subjected to racist abuse in a cup game at Lokomotive Leipzig. He was whistled by fans throughout the match after reporting the incident to officials. In another incident, a Kaiserslautern substitute was racially abused while warming up in a game at RSV Eintracht, the team's coach said. He didn't name the player affected. Both incidents occurred as lower-league clubs from the former East Germany hosted larger teams in first-round games. 'It is unacceptable that incidents have occurred at two DFB-Pokal matches in Germany," Infantino wrote on social media, using the German name for the competition. 'Football has no place for racism or any form of discrimination.' Infantino said FIFA's Players' Voice Panel would be 'in touch' with the German soccer federation. 'Everyone at FIFA, The Players' Voice Panel and the whole football community stands firmly with all those impacted by these events — we are committed to ensuring that players are respected and protected, and that competition organizers and law enforcement authorities take appropriate action," Infantino added. Antwi-Adjei filed a complaint about the incident at Lokomotive Leipzig and police were investigating, Schalke said late Sunday. At RSV Eintracht, fans and security quickly identified the alleged perpetrator and fans of both teams chanted 'Nazis out,' German agency dpa reported. The German soccer federation's president, Bernd Neuendorf, said it had already launched its own investigations into the two games. 'Racism and discrimination, hatred and exclusion have no place in football. We stand for diversity and respect. And alongside those affected and with those who stand up for our values,' Neuendorf said in a statement. The incidents in Germany came two days after Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo reported that he was racially abused by a spectator while playing at Liverpool. The game was briefly paused as the referee spoke to the coaches and captains of both teams. Police said Saturday that a 47-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offense. He was released on conditional bail Monday, police said, with a stipulation that he cannot attend soccer games in Britain. Infantino has said FIFA's Players' Voice Panel would contact Semenyo. ___
