Aserie Ndlovu murder case postponed as fifth suspect joins

The case of the five men charged in connection with the disappearance and murder of journalist Aserie Ndlovu and his partner, Zodwa Mdluli, has been postponed to 4 July.
The case was postponed to allow the fifth suspect, Thabang Isaac Hlophe, to secure legal representation after joining the other four.
Father Samuel Mogowe, Lucky Sikhosana, David Madisha, and Sello Skhalo Uoane previously abandoned their bail applications.
Court appearance for formal joinder
The five accused, who appeared in the KwaMhlanga Magistrate's Court in Mpumalanga on Friday, are facing two counts of kidnapping and murder each.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said Friday's court appearance was for the formal joinder of Hlophe to the matter and a possible bail application on his behalf.
'However, the application did not proceed as Hlophe opted to appoint a private attorney to represent him,' Nyuswa said.
All suspects have been remanded in custody.
'The [NPA] condemns acts of violent crime and remains resolute in pursuing justice for victims,' Nyuswa said.

Ndlovu and Mdluli reported missing
Ndlovu and Mdluli were last seen on 18 February and were reported missing shortly after their disappearance.
The accused were arrested on different occasions during a police intelligence-driven operation.
The first suspect arrested was the last to be in the company of the missing couple.
'The second, third and fourth suspects that have been arrested were found with different vehicle parts believed to be those of the missing journalist,' police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said shortly after the arrests.
'One of those arrested is said to be a mechanic who builds and fixes cars in the KwaMhlanga area. Two VW Citi Golfs that were found in possession of the suspects have been seized,' Mathe added.
Remains and DNA confirmation
Skeletal remains with gunshot wounds, believed to be of the missing couple, were discovered in Rust de Winter along the Limpopo-Gauteng border in May after the suspects identified the location.
Earlier this month, police confirmed that DNA analysis positively linked the remains to Ndlovu and Mdluli.
'The human remains were analysed and matched with the reference sample of the biological relatives of the deceased. A positive DNA match thus confirms that the discovered remains are those of the missing couple,' Mathe said at the time.

Triple fishing tragedy rocks Shelly Point
A tragic accident off the West Coast has claimed the lives of three local fishermen after their vessel capsized near Shelly Point on Friday afternoon. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) confirmed the incident, saying their Mykonos and St Helena Bay stations were activated at 16:11 following eyewitness reports of a man clinging to a capsized fishing boat, with more people feared in the water. NSRI St Helena Bay launched their rescue craft Rotary Onwards , with assistance from the SA Police Services, West Coast Disaster Risk Management, EMS, Saldanha Bay Traffic Services, and West Coast Medical Rescue. Police diving units were also alerted. On arrival, responders found the body of an adult male washed ashore, who was sadly declared deceased at the scene by paramedics. A second body was discovered in shallow surf nearby and recovered by NSRI rescue swimmers in cooperation with police. The man was also declared deceased. A Good Samaritan, wearing a wetsuit, was found in the surf searching among the rocks for the third missing fisherman. An NSRI rescue swimmer joined the search, and together they located and recovered the man's body from the rocky shoreline. All three men were declared deceased and their bodies were handed over to police and the Government Health Forensic Pathology Services. The victims are all believed to be local adult fishermen. Their identities have not yet been released. 'The circumstances that led to the fishing boat capsizing and the time of the incident is not clear,' said Cedric Brown, NSRI Mykonos duty coxswain. 'Police have opened an inquest docket.' The NSRI, emergency services, and police have commended the eyewitness who raised the alarm, as well as the Good Samaritan who bravely entered the surf to assist. 15-year-old learner arrested after stabbing schoolmate in KZN
A 15-year-old learner was arrested after stabbing his schoolmate in KwaMhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), on Thursday, 14 August 2025. Police received a call about a student who was stabbed and needed an ambulance. They immediately rushed to the school and found the victim lying face up with a stab wound on his left chest. The fight commenced after school between the two learners and proceeded to the street next to the school, where the suspect took out a knife and stabbed the victim in the chest. The suspect fled the scene and was traced to his residence, where he was arrested. The knife used to carry out the murder was found in the possession of the suspect's friend, who was taken in for further questioning. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) confirmed the death of the student. Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed to The South African that the cause of the fight is unknown yet.
