Bradley is set to become the Ryder Cup's first player-captain in 62 years
CUP FOR IT Keegan Bradley is fiery US Ryder Cup captain who still hasn't unpacked suitcase from last appearance 11 YEARS AGO
FIRE-BREATHING US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley may just have given himself the chance to finally unlock the suitcase that has remained off for limits nearly 11 years.
After experiencing a second successive Ryder Cup defeat at Gleneagles in 2014, Bradley vowed never to unpack his case until he finished on a winning USA team.

That looked increasingly unlikely as the man from Vermont failed to play his way back onto the team, was controversially snubbed for a wild card in 2023, and was then installed as US captain a year ago.
But exactly a year to the day after he was asked if he wanted to take on the Ryder Cup captaincy, he clinched a victory that handed him a whole new dilemma.
Bradley, who jumped at the chance to do the job Tiger Woods had already turned down, has spent the last year playing down his chances of becoming the Ryder Cup's first player-captain since Arnold Palmer doubled up in 1963.
But after his dramatic win in the Travelers Championship, he admitted he would have to take a 'pretty hard look' at whether he should be on his own team.

In front of a Connecticut crowd chanting 'USA, USA', Bradley took advantage of Tommy Fleetwood's three-putt bogey on the final hole by sinking a six footer for birdie - and a one shot victory.
That propelled him to a career high seventh in the world rankings, and catapulted him from 17th to ninth on the Ryder Cup qualifying list.
Only the top six qualify automatically. But the question now is whether Bradley, 39, can afford NOT to pick himself, unless his form falls off a cliff between now and September 26, when the battle with Europe begins at Bethpage Black in New York.
No-one can doubt Bradley's passion for the Ryder Cup. Or anything else.

He has become famous for the sort of frenzied celebrations that followed his latest win - letting out a massive roar, screaming a few obscenities at the adoring New England crowds and chest bumping caddie Scott Vail.
When he calmed down, a sheepish-looking Bradley confessed: 'I kind of lost it again there, didn't I? I might be in trouble with my mom for using some bad words.'

It would not be the first time.
Despite being known for his fiery nature, Bradley shocked plenty of people with his outburst in the USA's President Cup team room, shortly after holing the winning putt in their victory over the Internationals last year.
He roared: "I've been doubted my whole f***ing life, That's when I do my best work. We are gonna go to Bethpage to kick their f***ing ass."
Bradley later claimed he was surprised that comment was broadcast on Netflix's Full Swing series. Really?

They did not hold back from showing the stunned reaction of the entire Bradley family when he missed out on a wild card pick from Zach Johnson two years ago, with the out of form Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler picked ahead of him.
Maybe the memory of how the Scottish crowd taunted Bradley over his exaggerated pre-shot routine - a dozen or more club twirls, and backing away from his ball a few times before pulling the trigger - counted against him.
And his volatile on-course antics, which once saw him in a World Match Play face-off with Migel Angel Jimenez that had to be defused by a rules official, has also raised a few eyebrows.
Off the course, Bradley is a completely different animal - a devoted family man who dotes on wife Jillian and their two sons.

And he has formed a close friendship with basketball legend Michael Jordan.
Bradley was their original brand ambassador when the range of Jordan golf shoes was launched, and he still wears them now. Do not be surprised if golf nut Jordan is one of the US cheerleaders at Bethpage Black in September.
Bradley, 39, insists he will not surrender the US captaincy, 'under any circumstances'.

But he admitted the possibility of doubling up - and leaning more heavily on vice-captains Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker, Kevin Kinsner and Jim Furyk to look after the off course stuff - is now a real possibility.
He said: 'This changes the story a little bit. I never would have thought about playing if I hadn't won. This definitely opens the door to play.
'I don't know if I'm going to do it or not, but I certainly have to take a pretty hard look at what's best for the team and we'll see.
'I never really planned on playing. I really wanted to just be the captain. I really felt strongly about that. I want to serve the guys. They asked me to do a job. I want to do it to the best of my abilities.
'Now, with the amazing vice captains that I have, and I have a better perspective of playing in the Presidents Cup and being around a lot of the guys, I feel a lot more comfortable if I went that route.'
'It's still only June, so we've still got a long ways to go. This definitely changes things a little bit, and we'll all get together and figure out the best way to do this.'

Chelsea send message to Alejandro Garnacho over Manchester United transfer

Man Utd outcast Alejandro Garnacho is keen to join Chelsea (Picture: Getty) Chelsea have reiterated their desire to sign Alejandro Garnacho and told the Manchester United winger to be patient as they look to agree a deal before the transfer deadline. Despite an abundance of quality in the wide attacking areas, Chelsea are keen to welcome Garnacho to Stamford Bridge this summer. Garnacho accepts his United career is over after being included in Ruben Amorim's bomb squad and is hoping to seal a move to Chelsea. The Argentina winger always wanted to stay in the Premier League despite being banished by Amorim and play for a Champions League club. While both parties want the deal to happen, talks have stalled as Manchester United and Chelsea are a fair way apart in terms of Garnacho's valuation. The Red Devils want to raise around £50m from his sale but Chelsea value the player at around £30m. Garnacho may be tempted to consider other options during this stand-off but, according to talkSPORT, he has informed his friends he will be joining Chelsea. A picture of Garnacho outside Old Trafford was defaced (Picture: Getty) The 21-year-old has already agreed personal terms with Chelsea and is just waiting for those above him to strike a deal. It is also claimed Chelsea bosses have told Garnacho to be patient as they thrash out a deal with Manchester United and that they remain confident of making a breakthrough. Chelsea are fully aware that United are in a poor negotiating position given Amorim has made it clear Garnacho is no longer in his plans. Alejandro Garnacho, expert analysis 'Clubs try to leave things to the last minute sometimes, to strike a tough deal. But they need to be careful. Garnacho is a good player, and yes maybe they can drive his value down by waiting. 'However, I remember players at Tottenham who would have to wait until the very last day of the transfer window for Daniel Levy to let them leave for the biggest price. Daniel would always make sure he got what he wanted for players. There were big players he'd do this too. Gareth Bale and Luka Modric. Ex-Chelsea defender William Gallas (Picture: Getty) 'So for Manchester United, they know when they will have to sell him, but they will also know when they want to just keep him, and I think that would be a mistake. There's still two weeks to find out – if it was me, I would try and get him out of the club before the last day of the transfer window because if they leave it too late, they may have to take an offer that they don't really want. 'I think Garnacho is a good player. Will he be a difference maker at Chelsea? I'm not sure, but he has lots of potential.' Former Premier League defender William Gallas speaking to GamblingZone Amorim told the winger to find a new club at the end of last season after growing frustrated with his performances and some off-field issues. Following the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, Garnacho and his brother questioned Amorim's tactics, leaving the Old Trafford boss shocked and furious. Garnacho was then left out of United's pre-season tour to America before he was omitted from the matchday squad for the Premier League opener against Arsenal. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page It is not just Amorim who has lost patience with Garnacho but also a large section of the Old Trafford fan-base, with a picture of the player outside the stadium even defaced last week. Chelsea have spent around £250m on eight new signings so far this summer but are interested in Xavi Simons as well as Garnacho. Simons, too, has already approved the move but Chelsea are yet to meet RB Leipzig's valuation for the Netherlands international. More Trending While working on deals for Garnacho and Simons, Chelsea are keen to offload up to ten first-team players before the summer transfer window closes. Christopher Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson, Raheem Sterling, Axel Disasi, Renato Veiga, Carney Chukwuemeka, Ben Chilwell and Tyrique George are all available for sale. Club World Cup winners Chelsea began their 2025-26 Premier League campaign in underwhelming fashion, sharing a goalless draw with Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge. Enzo Maresca's side have three more London derbies coming up, starting with a trip to east London to face struggling West Ham on Friday night. For more stories like this, check our sport page. But reports from Argentine journalist Gaston Edul claim the boss has been unable to get chiefs to spend big on a new No1. Man Utd have been heavily linked with Aston Villa stopper Martinez. A bid of around £40million is thought to be enough to bring the 32-year-old to Old Trafford. It all comes down to this week, with five automatic spots having already been secured and just one more to fill before Luke Donald then makes his six captain's picks for Europe's defence of the Ryder Cup in the event's 45th edition at Bethpage Black in just over a month's time. It's job done for Rory McIlroy, Bob MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose and Tyrrell Hatton - five members of the winning team at Marco Simone Golf Club on the outskirts of Rome two years ago - after they all clinched automatic berths for the match on Long Island. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Ryder Cup captains Luke Donald and Keegan Bradley pictured during the Year to Go Media Event at the Statue of Liberty last year |McIlroy, who will be making his eighth consecutive appearance in the biennial bout, secured his spot as early as mid-June, helped, of course, by his memorable Masters win in April, while it was mission accomplished for MacIntyre, Fleetwood, Rose and Hatton as well after the updated points list was published on Monday. As far as the final automatic spot goes, even though Shane Lowry is the player currently sitting sixth on the points list, it's in the hands of Rasmus Hojgaard, which is down to the fact that points are up for grabs in this week's Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo at The Belfry but not in the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta. Under threat Shane Lowry looks a certainty for a captain's pick Hojgaard was on course to move into one of the guaranteed places when he led the Danish Golf Championship on Sunday only to lose out to Marco Penge following a dramatic turnaround over the final 12 holes, meaning he now needs to finish in a tie for 29th with one other player or better to earn the 13.7 points in the Betfred British Masters that would see him overtake Lowry and he could still finish above Hatton as well. Lowry, who is among the 30 players who have qualified for the Tour Championship, can only watch from afar, though he seems a certainly for one of Donald's picks should that be required and the same goes for Sepp Straka, who currently sits seventh on the list, as well as Ludvig Aberg (ninth) and Viktor Hovland (tenth). Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Even though he's down in 23rd position, Jon Rahm, who has been part of two winning teams in three appearances and has just topped the LIV Golf individual standings this season, is surely a stick on for a pick as well and you've really got to think that Hojgaard will be on the list, too, if it comes down to it. Which, of course, would leave just one spot up for grabs and that's what is going to make the four days of action at The Belfry in particular fascinating but also with one eye being kept on East Lake and we will come to the latter but not before focusing on the former. Former US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick is the headline name in the field for this week's Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo at The Belfry |Matt Wallace and Matt Fitzpatrick, the players currently sitting 11th and 12th respectively on the points list, are in the field at the Sutton Coldfield venue, as are in-form Penge (14th), Aaron Rai (15th), Jordan Smith (16th) and defending champion Niklas Norgaard (18th). After being overlooked by Thomas Bjorn for a pick in 2018, Wallace has put himself in the mix again but, with all due respect to him, Fitzpatrick looks more likely of the two to be selected by Donald, especially after the former US Open champion managed to turn his season around after going through a rough patch earlier in the year. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad A win for either of those players on home turf could prove decisive when it comes down to the captain and his trusty vice captains making the final call and the same goes for Nicolai Hojgaard, who is 25th in the standings and will be determined to make a big last push, as will 20th-ranked Thorbjorn Olesen, the 2022 Betfred British Masters winner at the same venue. With all due respect to Penge, even though he has won twice on the DP World Tour this season and finished in a tie for second behind Chris Gotterup in the Genesis Scottish Open, this Ryder Cup is probably too early for him, especially when he's had very little experience of playing on big stages in the US, while the likes of Smith, Norgaard, Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen and Kristoffer Reitan will also be more likely contenders for the 2027 contest at Adare Manor in Ireland than this one. Which brings us to the real dark horse heading into the final week and I am referring, of course, to Harry Hall, the flat-cap wearing Englishman who has had an incredible start to his professional career and, in doing so, has put himself in the frame for a captain's pick. Englishman Harry Hall pictured during last week's BMW Championship in Maryland, where he finished sixth to progress to the Tour Championship | Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images On the back of 11 successive top-30 finishes, including three top tens, on the PGA Tour, Hall has made it through to the Tour Championship and, if he can have a big week in Atlanta even if it won't earn him any points, then Donald could be facing a big headache before announcing his selections on Monday, 1 September. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad For what it's worth, I reckon Fitzpatrick, based on his greater experience, will be the player who gets the nod for the final spot and, if that's the case, then the only change would be an ironic one, of course, because it would mean that Rasmus Hojgaard will be replacing his twin brother. Keegan Bradley's playing role is still the big question for Americans As for the Americans, Scottie Scheffler, J.J. Spaun, Xander Schauffele, Russell Henley, Harris English and Bryson DeChambeau have all secured automatic selection, with the big question remaining whether or not Keegan Bradley will be a playing captain. He sits 11th on the points list, with Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Ben Griffin, Maverick McNealy and Brian Harman the others currently inside the top 12.
